Hello, everyone. I am a Chinese girl and I will go to the USA to go for my master study in September. I never leave my country. When I think I will be alone in a foreign country I feel nervous. I might get culture shock or have problems of communication. This feeling freaks me out. Do you have the same experience? What can I do to relieve this feeling?

I think the culture shock and the feelings you are experiencing and will experience are normal for anyone who has or is going to travel to another country. I've never been to another country so I can't help you with the culture shock. But, let me say that I welcome you to America. My country is a beautiful place and there are so many cultures that are represented here. I hope, while you are here, that you will have the opportunity to travel the country a little and see some different places. There is SO much to see. America truly is a special place. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. If you have any questions about America feel free to ask me. Good luck when you come here and I sincerely hope you enjoy your stay.

I don't know anything about moving to other country, since i never done it before. But i have friends from America, who are worked here and stay here for some couple of year in my country. And it usually they are get culture shocked, yes, but just like the first or second week, after that they are got adjusted. And yes i think it would be kinda scary to think to move to foreign place and don't know anybody at all there, but don't worry, the key is easy, you need to be brave and make friends there.

No culture shock, when you are choosing USA for your study, prepare to make friends with USA people and create a bod or friendship. I know you are a brave girl, go ahead with the new environment.

In my opinion, you don't need to feel a culture shock. You still have time before leaving your country to investigate a part of the american culture thanks to internet. So you can prepare yourself already in advance. You also can try to know new american people online, before moving abroad. As you already know English, see it like a possibility to build it more up when you go there, it's a big chand and oportunity you have going there for studying. Instead of a shock, you might feel a big expectation about what you will find there. It's a great oportunity. Take it as an experience for life. I also moved abroad and we really can learn a lot from other countries, their people, culture and believes. So, I see it positive in all aspects.

Well, the thing scares me most is the language. My english is not so good and I am afraid I may have problems to communicate with others. But as you say, I should prepare myself already in advance.

Yes, I think it's just common to feel a little anxiety to go to a foreign country especially that you will go there alone. But just like in all other things, preparation is always important. If you will come prepared, there's no need to worry. Since you still have lot of time, you can do a lot of readings and research about what to expect in your planned destination. Actually posting in myLot is a good step, people here are always willing to help and share their ideas and knowledge. Well, once you landed to the USA, you will of course feel different, but as the days pass, you will learn to adjust and soon be comfortable. Well, I wish you the best of luck and may you always succeed in your plans. God bless and happy myLotting!

It is normal to feel alienated in another country. But you have a great purpose why you have to be in the US. So instead of focusing on your fear, think of the great opportunity that you have. Not all can have the chance like you have now. Think positive. And make new friends. That will lessen your anxiety. I am sure you are not the only Chinese girl on the school where you will be studying.

Yes, you are right. I should think positive. I have this chance and I should hold it. Many Chinese people study in that school. I will not feel lonely there. Thank you for your response.

I can understand your feelings, especially you are a girl. Girl is much more emotional and it is harder to depend on yourself in a foreign country. But you have to think about the positive way. It is a new country and it means everything will be new for you. This can be exciting, too. Especially USA is a developed country and you will learn a lot from it.

I think the feeling you have is pretty natural, but I can say from my own experience that once you're there, you'll be fine. Americans are very friendly and nice and you'll make friends in no time. Besides, the mix of cultures there is almost like nowhere else, so you will definitely not feel alone.

I would. But I've never had to move to a different country. But I know I would feel nervous. I feel nervous at every bigger life change of mine... especially living in a different place... making acquaintances, speaking a different language, living gull on my own...

First of all,as a Chinese guy,I would like to say I am so envy you that you have that opportunity to study in USA,you know what? There are so many university students what to get their further study in USA but only less of them can have the opportunity,so please cherish this chance. And as for your question,as for me,when I have the opportunity to travel to another country I will feel very excited, though it is different because you are for the study, but I think you will forget all of the anxiety at all when you land on USA because you will have so much thing to do,then thing will getting better when the day goes by.
