Well, if it is for the good of him I think he will appreciate your concern. You may advise him to drink tea instead of coffee. I heard from some of the mylotters here that drinking tea to replace coffee can help one to get rid of smoking.

I am a coffee lover..a genuine enthusiast of this bean family. Nevertheless, I drink a maximum of two cups daily. There were very rare incident that I had had more than two cups. I never smoke. Smoking can kill. Coffee drinking will not. There are bad side effecfs from drinking too much coffee. The allowable daily consumption that can be considered beneficial to most coffee drinkers is up to three cups. If you are really addicted, four cups can still be good, just be sure, you're not hypertensive or suffering from some illness. Because to coffee drinkers, coffee will save you from becoming sick of alzheimer's disease. But if you're not really a regular coffee drinker, you'd better not try at all. Coffee is quite addicting...a real hard habit to break..

I have some relatives who are smokers, on other hand my mother does not smoke but she's somehow addicted to coffee. I told her already, a number of times that she's addicted to coffee because of the caffeine in it. Anyway, coffee can be beneficial when taken probably in moderation, however I am 100% sure that smoking has more bad effects than good effects (if ever there are).

Anything excessive is not good, just like too much coffee-drinking. I learned that from experience. I used to drink a lot, like more than 4 cups a day, mostly because of my work and I have to be alert and awake. But then I experienced twitching, sleeplessness, palpitation and hyper-acidity so I decided to temporarily abstain from drinking coffee. I didn't drink coffee for a month, just water, tea, and fruit juice. Now I feel better. I started drinking coffee again, but not as much as before. Like last week, I only had 2 cups. I think your father in law has to limit his coffee intake as well.
