Kitten and the litterbox

My little kitten is great about using his litterbox and he knows exactly where to go. Every once in a while I notice that when he comes out he has a bit of poo on his back foot. One time I watched him when it happened and he gets so excited about covering up his business that he sort of stumbles. I noticed it on his foot again today and it was more than the last time. I had just cleaned out the litterbox so there was nothing else in it. He came into the kitchen and I happened to pick him up and notice the poo on his back foot. I guess he just accidentally steps in it? It's not like I leave the litterbox uncleaned for days, I normally clean it out everyday so he doesn't step in anything. I think maybe he just stumbles into it while he's trying to cover it up with the litter. I've never had a cat before and I was just curious if anyone else had experienced this with their cat or kitten

It really isn't anything to be worried about, he is still growing and like all creatures that are still growing, he is a bit clumsy. As he gets a bit older he won't be as apt to step in the poo while he is burying it. I had a similar problem with Willy when he was smaller, but when he got a bit older the problem stopped as he had gotten a bit more coordinated and graceful (well as graceful as the big lug will ever be...he isn't the typical graceful cat but with the size he is I don't expect a ballet dancer. He is about 25 pounds and 28 pounds of it is pure love!)

At least you didn't have my experience! I adopted two Siamese at the same time!!! Talk about a handful! My drapes were their jungle and they climbed them constantly. I am glad that I adopted the pair as they kept each other company and contrary to what people say, they didn't focus on each other and shut me out of the dynamics. When he gets to five months he will start to shoot up, and suddenly you will have a wonderful large male cat. I hope you're planning to neuter him. If you don't he WILL start marking his territory by spraying (that's when they back up to something and pee on it...I know "EEEWWWWWW that's disgusting" but when you look at the wild cats and realize that domestic cats have been domesticated for only a few thousand years, it makes sense). Also it won't have people knocking at your door asking if your guy has been busy and you're presented with boxes of kittens. My guys went in at 4 months so that they never knew the "call of the wild" and went out searching for a girlfriend. I travel through Wal Mart with my calculator in hand. I do price per on it and discovered that the Smart Kitty was a great buy. It's $7.97 for a 28 pound box. But people's tastes and scent preferences are different. The scented special kitty has a wonderful aroma too...well at least to me. I hope you aren't feeding him just dry food. Male cats especially need moist food at least once a day. The dry food can create kidney stones which if not treated immediately can be fatal to a cat. That's why my guys have a huge dishpan of water that they can drink from constantly (and I don't have to worry about their running out of water) and I keep it in my bathtub so it stays cleaner and cooler for them. I lost one boy to kidney stones and it broke my heart! You're going to have to post pix of your boy so we can enjoy him too! I haven't gotten any good ones of my boys lately, they have been so supportive and close to me since I lost my female Siamese, Murphy. But Khuay's antics are well known throughout the lot. (The brothers are named Willy and Khuay and I have a Maine Koon cat by the name of Dinglebeary)

Oh my that's a big cat!! My mom researched my kitten's breed and she found out that the males can reach up to 25 pounds. Right now he's about 2 pounds and I'm curious to see what he'll be like as an adult. When he gets bigger he might become a bit more graceful in the litterbox but he may need a bigger one lol. At the time when I bought it I thought it was pretty big. But seeing him in it now he seems to fit just right in it so I can only imagine what it'll be like when he gets bigger. Do cats really need a big litterbox? The one I have now was the biggest one available but now that I see him in it and he's just a kitten, it seems a bit small

He's a British Shorthair. I have a hard time imagining him getting that big...he's 4 months old and he still weighs 2 pounds. I've never had a cat before so I don't know how fast they grow, but everyone tells me they don't stay little long but my little guy doesn't seem to grow that fast. I've had him a month now and he's only gotten a little longer and slightly taller. Depending on how much he grows I'll probably have to change the litterbox to something bigger. When he does pee, he usually doesn't cover it up but every once in a while he will. I just want his box to be big enough so he doesn't end up stepping in his business all the time. I usually clean it out everyday but sometimes I do it every other day. I use the TidyCats clumping litter and it seems to work really well. The pee clumps up nicely and the poo gets covered up in the little "litter beads" as I like to call them lol. So the box never smells because the litter has a nice fresh scent to it. I get it from Walmart in one of the larger plastic containers. I'm not sure what litter is best or cheapest, I think the one I have was around $13 for the 36 pound container and I'm only about a third of the way through it. I guess as he gets older I'll become more used to all the products and I'll know what works best for him. So far it's definitely been a fun experience!

He'll should grow out of this when he gets more steady. He'll also get better at cleaning up afterward. I remember one of my little males first attempts at pooping... As the poop came out one end the other end went down, like he was coming up off of it. I thought he was going to tip over, nose first. It was funny to watch. He got the hang of it soon after.

That's too cute! I wonder how they manage to do that lol. I'm hoping with time he'll get a little better when he's in the litterbox because he's still a bit clumsy. But for now, I'll just keep it as clean as possible so he doesn't have a bunch of poop that he could possible step in.

I think I was lucky with Patches and Stripes. Only twice in their 3 years have they gone outside the box, once when Patches was a kitten she pee'd on my sister bed. My sistser had newspaper down, and she pee'd on it (but I think whoever had her they used newspaper, and hay). She loves both odd, but she will make a bed out of the small animal hay and sleep in it. A few months back she pee'd by the back door, but there was a stray cat outside more or less harrassing them, so I think this is a my spot deal. She was very upset, so I dont blame her. Now Toppie he gets in the box, and digs to china. He will fling the llitter everywhere. So I put cardboard under and up the wall so when he flings it goes on the cardboard then I will throw it out.

Using the litterbox isn't a problem for him. Since the day we got him he's known exactly where to go to do his business. He just gets a little clumsy I think because he's still so young. Plus, he really likes to scratch and dig around in the litter after he goes poo, but not when he pees. I'm surprised with the way he scratches around he doesn't fling litter outside the box. But his box has one of those covers on it so everything stays inside for the most part. Then I have one of those mats to trap the litter from his paws right in front of the entrance to his box. For the most part, he keeps things pretty tidy except for when he stumbles into his business lol

I have a cat too. She is 8 month. And she exactly know where to pee. Maybe your kitten is too young. And I have no idea how to teach him where to move bowels. Be patient.

No, my kitten knows where the litter box is and he always uses it. He sometimes gets clumsy and he'll trip over his own paws and accidentally step in poo

Like all babies he'll be a little clumsy at first. I've 3 cats - 2 females and 1 male, they all toilet outside. I provided a box for them; they wouldn't use it it was clear 'out is where you go', the tom gets his sisters to bury his business! I think he'll grow out of this tendency, he's only a baby yet.

Lol it probably is just clumsiness on his part. I wish he'd use the bathroom outside like our dogs do. It would be nice to not have a litterbox. But I'd be so nervous about letting him outside on his own and not knowing whether or not he'll come back. So far, the litterbox doesn't bother me and it's not much of a hassle to scoop out everyday

I think it's something he will grow out of, especially if he's young. We had a cat who use to squat too low when he peed so he would end up with wet litter on his bum so we would have to wipe his bum just like a child LOL. He eventually grew out of it though.

Lol that's too funny! I feel like I have to wipe my kitten too because he seems to trip into his own poo! I'm hoping he does grow out of it, I think he will because it just seems like he gets a bit clumsy

it is the cat's instinct to cover their wastes... Some cats have this much more than other cats. Some will get in, do their bit and then, maybe scrape a little litter over the mess, others will get in and just go crazy scratching... I suspect he might be more of the latter. They often get to scratching they kind of forget what they are doing besides scratching!

Sometimes I hear him scratching around the litterbox like a madman lol! It's only when he poos though, when he pees he just jumps in and out. I think he still needs to get used to himself and not trip over himself while in the litterbox

Awwww! He is just getting it on him by accident. Beeping a box of baby wipes or pet wipes would be good. You are lucky that he covers his poo. Some boy kitties never think about covering it.

He seems to get a bit clumsy and accidentally stumbles and steps into it. The first time it happened I was able to clean it up with a baby wipe but yesterday it was a bigger accident and I felt more comfortable with using some soap and water to wash his paw rather than only wiping it. I think he tries to cover it up too quickly and he ends up tripping over himself lol. Hopefully he'll get a little more graceful with age

I never had that problem but maybe he's just a little clumsy still. How old is he? I had a cat that would get angry and run up the stairs and trip. On the stairs. I never saw a cat trip up the stairs before but she did. And she was an adult cat. Maybe when he's kicking the litter to bury it his foot hits the poo and that's how he gets it on himself. He's maybe standing too close to it. I think as he grows he'll become more proficient at burying it. I hope.

I think he's about 14 weeks now. He's still pretty little and although he's pretty agile when he runs and jumps around, every once in a while he does get a little clumsy. It seems he's still getting the hang of burying his business and whenever he covers poo he goes about doing it very fast and he has to really bury it all. I'm hoping that he gets a little better at it and doesn't stumble into it anymore because it would be bad if I wasn't home to see it on his paw and he tracked little poo prints around the house. What a mess!
