You Child's Interests

My son changes interests from time to time. Before, he wanted to join the band so I bought him a snare drum and uniform. Then, he wanted to join the school choir so I bought him the choir uniform. These changed, however, and he now wants to be a basketball player so we bought him a basket ball and shoes for the sports and enrolled him in basketball classes.
Is your child's interests ever changing as my son's? What are your child's interests then and now? Are you always supportive of his or her interests?

Thats normal for kids to do. My son has always wanted to be a dentist, like his grandpa is.

That's great@ My husband was a basketball player too. He's happy that our son likes basketball as well. My son likes gadgets as well. He just got a PSP for doing well in school this year and he has an android phone while I don't. Well, he deserve these things for being a good kid and as I've mentioned, for doing great in school. He won in a number of contests for this year. He likes playing Fruit Ninja in his phone and Canal Control in mine.

As a growing child, his interests will keep on changing until he matures. Just support him in ways that you can.
Our daughter when she was growing up has lots of interests too. There were lots of things we bought for her and after some time she isn't using them anymore. What is important is that we are supporting them.

Thanks SimplyD!
You are right! I believe it is good to let kids discover opportunities and potential fields which may start by little thing such as playing and having hobbies. It is also important, like you said, that we let them know that we're always here to support them. It will help them gain confidence too.

Sometimes they do something because it is something that their friends do. One of my sons decided to learn how to skateboard once. We bought one for a beginner complete with the helmet and all the other safety equipments. He tried it once or twice, then I realized it has been sitting in his closet collecting dust. Although he seemed so keen to learn in the beginning, he lost interest so fast and we found out it was not something he really interested in; he did it because his friends did.

Hi there Sishy7!
Thanks for your response. Yeah, I agree. I don't even remember where I left my son's snare drum now. I probably gave it to my nephew.

there are many debateable question about the behaviouer of the children espacially when his hobbies or interested change with in a short time
but for a parent it is too must painful why this be gone, you need to paid more ontention toward your child ,see closely its activity get information from his teacher and class mate it is very strange situation be cler that we try to cteat positive interest amoung our choildren is this any unpleasent activity arose due to which your child change his hobby

Hi there Profmuhammadakhtar! Welcome to Mylot!
I understand where you're point. Yes, there might be some reason why kids lose interest on a previous hobby. I honestly think, that in my son's case, though, that he just found some other hobbies that is more interesting for him. It probably has something to do with his age and friends' interests as well.

Yes, nanayangel...my kids' interests do change from time to time. Since I have three my head is spinning every time they ask something differently from the other. I don't mind as long as I can afford those things. I am very supportive of them. My eldest wanted to learn to play the organ so I enrolled the two of them. My second used to copy her sister's likes. Now my eldest is going crazy about playing the guitar.
My son is still very young and he always wants to have new toys like what his playmates have.

Hi there cherigucchi!
Wow, yes, that could be confusing at times. I just find it cute that one of your kids look up to her sister and copies her interests as well. And it is perfectly understandable that your son wants the same toys that his peers have.

it is NOT only a woamn's prerogative to change her mind. LOL children do change their minds frequently and if you always heed them, you'll have headaches.
enrolling him in basketball classes is good. he gets to exercise and socialize with his peers while learning the sport.
we should always be supportive of our children's interest becasue this is important for them to grow into responsible and well balanced adults. if we don't mind our children, who else will?
if you don't mind, i want to suggest that the next time he says he wants to join some group/club, don't go rushing to buy him his uniform. ask him to have a try out. if he decides to stay, then it is the time to get him the uniform.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. Yeah, good thing that for basketball, it's been his interest for a couple of years now. This time, I think this he'll be playing for a long time. He's always watching NBA and PBA games and when he's done with homework, he watches basketball vids on Youtube. He's a fan of Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

Oh most definitely. He was into dinosaurs when he was about 5 and loved anything to do with them. Then he liked Lego and pokemon cards and now is into playing basketball and loves anything to do with science.

That's interesting! The things that your kid likes are similar to my son's as well. When he was younger, probably three, he was into dinosaurs and love watching Land Before Time and Jurassic Park over and over. He's into science as well. He won the science quiz bee for their level on the previous academic year.
