Go with an xbox 360.Even though it costs money to play online it's 100% worth it.You get a lot more features and the online servers are a lot better. You can play certain Xbox games on xbox 360.You can't play all Xbox games on a 360 but you can play most of them.Xbox 360's online servers are better. With an Xbox 360 you can talk to muliple people at one without being in te same game, which ps3 dosen't have.I would overall recommend Xbox 360

Rather buy a blue ray player for the movies because you will want to save your ps3 laser for your games. They have about 1000 hours on them so it would be more economical to buy a blueray player and use the ps3 primary for gaming

my vote is for the ps3.
i have owned both and personally stuck with the ps3 in my own place.
yes, the xbox has some games that you cant get in ps3 that i enjoied but it goes the same the other way where you cant get games for the xbox that are made for ps3. however, you get more gamevariety with ps3.
on top of that you can play both your DVDs and blu-rays on a ps3 without laggs or without hurting the system or the disc.
as far as i know the new systeems (wether it be xbox or playstation) they will play the older version games.
i find that the layout of the ps3 system and how it is organized is better than the xbox, it is more user friendly.
its all about your personal preference though. if you play the games that are offered for xbox more than the ps3 than my advice is void. you should just research what you get out of each system that interests you instead of getting what everyone else likes.

I have a PS because not only it has a Blu-Ray player, Sony has great first party exclusives and some of them are coming out this year. I haven't had any problems with mine and I highly recommend it because it has a lot of great games and it's very durable.

If your primary focus is for the bluray playback then yes go with a PS3. Older models of the PS3 were backward compatable (able to play PS2 games. Although newer models cant play old games. If you are into classic games from other systems (for instance the Sega Genesis) via download I would say the Xbox 360 wins in that department. Xbox 360 also has better compatability with the older Xbox games. Its not perfect with everything but does seem to do alot better as I think all xbox 360 models can play many of the old Xbox games.
Both systems have pros and cons of course. I think the downside of the Xbox 360 is to play multiplayer games online you need to get an Xbox Live Gold subscription. I also think the Xbox has more games online than PS3 and more players than. Also could be a factor in your decision could be controller and which one you like better. The deciding factor could come down to the type of games that you want to play. Good luck and always have fun in your gaming decision.

We have owned a PS2 and currently have the xbox360. Don't really know if PS3 can do all of what you're asking but with xbox360 it can. You can also view netflix and amazonprime via xbox too and lots of other things!

Well since the ps3 has a bluray drive, it can absolutely play bluray movies unlike the xbox360 which is loaded only with a dvd-dual drive, though a few years ago, there was an add-on for the 360 which is a removable HD-DVD player which eventually lost support since HD-DVD became phased out. Anyway, based on what I have read before, the early versions of the ps3 can play some ps2 games, however the succeeding revisions of the ps3 removed this feature (I think), thus the latest version of the ps3 (superslim) will probably be unable to play ps2 games. Anyway, why bother? Just buy a second hand ps2 or even a brand-new one if you really want to play your classic ps2 games. As for the xbox 360, I think it could play a few hundreds of the old xbox games, not sure if it has 100% compatibility with all the xbox library. Anyway, my honest opinion would be, that wait for a while, since the ps4 have been announced already and according to rumors, the next-gen xbox will be announced this year as well. Also, if you really want a newer and more powerful console than the ps3 (graphics-wise), I suggest that you check out the nintendo wii u. Anyway, I used to play video games but kinda got tired of it, so I just play once in a while like facebook games.
