Church twice a year only, WHY?

My parents go to church every Sunday and have for years. There was a mass last night that my parents could have went to but decided against it mainly because people were going to be baptized and it was going to be overly crowded. So they got up this morning to go to 8am mass. They arrived at the church at 7:30am to find that most seats were taken. They were luck enough to find seats however, any other time during the year church is usually empty. Why do people feel the need to go on Easter and Christmas only? Don't they realize they are acting like hypocrites? Why bother going if you don't go all year round. I don't go to church the most I do is go to a chapel (that is open to the public) and pray from time to time throughout the year. However, I would never think to show my face at a church just because its Easter or Christmas.

Maybe they just bought a new outfit and want to show it off. A lot of people do buy new clothes for Easter.

Yup. Those 2 times a year people will walk in all holier than thou with their expensive new Easter/Christmas fancy church clothes. While someone who goes often and wears normal clothes feels out of place. Although as they walk in all smug I can't help from getting a devilish grin on my face due to the irony.

I know what you mean. They think they are pulling the wool over Gods' eyes. Like he doesn't know that they are not in church all year round.

I feel exactly the same way as you do. I am a Catholic and we are the monority religion on this Island but some people only come at Easter and Christmas and talk of having done their duty! This gets me so angry and yes, they are hypocrites

It makes not a bit of sense to go. Do they not think God knows they haven't been there all year. Do they think they are fooling anyone. It just makes me so mad and I wonder how the priest feel. They must be very angry because they know next Sunday its going to be the regulars again like my parents.

My situation is different. I want to go but can't get there. I would feel embarrassed to just show up on Easter. We were supposed to go today but like always daughter has her way and we don't go. She refuses to go and I can't go if they don't go.

I had a discussion here with the family about church last night. I want to go to church every Subday if I could. I miss it. My family never wants to go. We end up going some years on Mothers Da and Fathers Day and maybe Easter. We were supposed to go this morning. I said that I feel stupid going and everyone knows we never go. I got ready last night so I could dress for church this morning. Then at 7 my daughter says 'we aren't going to church. I have an earache.' She didn't complain all day. It was just an excuse. I'm going to call some churches to find out if anyone will come get me and carry me to church. I called my church and asked if they had a bus or any volunteers to get people to church and they said no. Son in law won't let me take the car to go myself. So I feel like a hypocrite too, but it is more that I feel embarrassed.

A hypocrite is one who only goes to church twice a year on the holidays. You can't feel like a hypocrite because its your daughter and son-in-law who are not taking you. If they were taking you every week that would be good. Just realize that God knows you want to go but have no way of getting there. Do like I do pray at home or watch the mass on tv. Though it would be great if you could find someone to take you every week, even if you gave them a few dollars for gas it would be worth it.

My church has an online service. It's live. I have tuned in before but I'm not added to the attendance. I could continue to watch online but its not the same. I do pray and give praise to The Lord.

Because people are like robots they love following traditions. People go to church to make them feel and make God feel that they really remember him at least twice in a year. I don't go to church but I remember God almost everyday as soon as I woke up.

Thank you I do the same as you. I don't go to church since I moved to Puerto Rico. However, I pray each and everyday and God is in my heart. I would feel so funny showing up just twice a year. I do go to a small chapel not to far from my house which is open to the public. I go there to pray from time to time.

That's very nice. Most small chapels in my place is locked because some may steal inside the chapel. Big churches are open for anyone to sit and pray inside. I love it when temples are used to say our prayers or we can kneel even for a short while.

I am honestly a church goer too,but i never underestimated those who don't go to church on a regular basis. Like my mom was n0t able to go to church due to work before and n0w that she's free on Sunday she still won't go ,i think shy or unfamiliarity with the current members. But she's even m0re faithful to read the Bible and her devotional prayer than i who goes to church every sunday. Though fellowship with one an0ther is encourage, i don't judge those who can't go regularly. Who knows they may be growing in their spiritual lìfe than s0me who go, but can't practice the teachings. Only God kn0ws what it is in every heart

Yes, the point is if some people go at least once a month and on Easter and Christmas that is ok. However, thoses who go only twice a year and then take up the seats of the people who go to church regularly it is not fair. I don't understand what comes over people to feel the need to go to church only on these two holidays. God knows they don't go to church every week or sometimes.

Your parents did a wise thing by not going to church when it is too crowded. The serenity of the atmosphere is lost when there is a lot of crowd in places of worship. I am a Hindu but the same thing goes on here regarding our temples.Peopel throng temples on special religious festival days and I see no sense. In getting squeezed in the crowd and not being able to concentrate on God for a minute. I thought it is typical of our country; now I realize it is the same the world over. I choose to go on days that are likely to be less crowded...

lelin I grew up going to chruch every Syunday but here I have no way to get to a church and I am not able to walk twelve blocks with a walker to go to church. I am physically handicapped so I do not go to church now. I do worship in a corner by nmyself, Not everybody can get to church so do not condemn them if they can get someone to take them even twice a year,. how do we know their hearts.judge not lest ye be judged.

I can't get to a church either due to distance. Please these people are going only because its the holiest days of the year. Otherwise any other time they could get to church if they really wanted to go. Lets not excuse them. They show up one or two days of the year taking all the seats from the regular people who go every sunday. Please its not judging its stating facts. I know if I could get to church on these two holidays I wouldn't go just to so face. I didn't go all year why would I dare step foot in a church on these holidays. It makes no sense to me. God knows they haven't gone all year. Like I said hypocrites!

Well, I really don't know why it is that there are people that feel like they are fulfilling their obligations by going to church only on Christmas and Easter. I mean I don't go to church regularly, but I also don't feel like it is a requirement of me to attend church on Christmas and Easter. I don't understand it because just going to church on those two holidays is not going to be something that will make up for the fact that you are not seen in church during all of the other days of the year.

lelin1123 Very interesting...I don't understand why you think it's better to not go at all if you go only 2x a year, on major holidays. I respect your opinion, it's just I have never heard anyone say this. I would think it is better to at least go a few times than never...? Anyway..that's one thing I love about myLot..we learn so many different opinions.

Let me tell you if you spoke to a person who goes to church every Sunday they will tell you they hate going to church on a holiday like Easter or Christmas because that is when all the hypocrites come out and crowd the churches where it ends up being standing room. I have heard even someone on this discussion state how they can't stand it.

Hi, you are right. People o to church on only these two important days because they think that the prayers are listened on these two days. I am Hindu. Our temples are also crowded at festival time. In temples there are no benches to sit. So we have to stand in long queue. People stand for 2-3 hours in the queue for praying God. I think they have true faith in God. i don't go in these crowded days. II want to go to temple when it is calm and quiet surrounding.

I agree going to church when its less crowded is more peaceful. When its crowded there are usually to many kids making noise and you really can't concentrate on praying.

Well, I'm catholic too if you ask me .. I'm telling the truth, I don't go to church every Sunday, maybe only twice every month and every time I come to church, my heart and my brain is not stop talking something bout this world, the cruel things or else .. Jesus asking us to be not hypocrite .. to care everybody, specially the poor people, the sick people .. I think the best is ACT what Jesus say, to be like Him .. Although you don't go to church, you should keep to care with everybody .. Be someone go to church every Sunday but never care to everybody else is mean the hypocrite ..

I am a Catholic and as a kid I was going into church every sunday but now I just don't feel thee need to go every time. Actually I go only when I am very very nervous and I need some time for myself becuase it is ideal for a little relaxation and good thinking about your problems.

I totally understand. I use to go as a child and up till I moved out of New York. I do go to a chapel near my house that I can walk in to pray at any time. However, going to a regular Catholic mass with engish language spoken I don't have that in my area. I also don't feel the need to go because I pray to God each and everyday thanking him for my blessed life.

It is the same in all churches I think. I have not been in church much this year, working too much, but I visit my brother at Easter and he is a pastor of a very small church. We had a Good Friday service, and old fashioned gospel music singing on Saturday and a church service this morning. There were people there who never come except for holidays, and those people had little children. He really stressed that the children need to be raised coming to church and be there all of the time.

I wonder how many kids are going to church these days. I don't think believe its like it was when I was growing up. You either went to catholic school or CCD classes and you had to go to church every sunday. I think this is partly the problem of this world today. Not enough of God in our lives.

I go to church occasionally, although I haven't been this year. I don't go every week because I don't need a support group for my religion, which is all that churches are. I'm very content to read my Bible when I want to and worship God every day, praying to Him and trying to live the lifestyle He recommends. I will sometimes go on Christmas and Easter because those days are so significant and have a real importance in my life and sharing that joy with other people--and hearing them sing His praises--increases my own. The only time I think it's hypocritical to go to church is when someone thinks it absolves them and they think they can sin the rest of the time then go back to church and have everything be okay with their soul. I don't find any fault in sporadic church-goers at all as long as they don't go for absolution.

This is why I think they go only these two holy days of the year for absolution. Then all year long they are sinning and not praying at all.

Hahaha ... we sometimes casually asked some Christian. There are few who explained to us that they only go to' church once a year which is on Christmas Day. I think quite many people do that and that is why on Christmas Day the church are extra packed. Another reason is many church members invites their non-Christian to come and watch the Christmas or Resurrection Sunday (Easter Day) drama / play. I even knew some people who only turned up on Father's day and Mother's Day for the special prayer and door gifts.

You can serve religion, but 'as for me & my house, we serve the Lord G*d.' Do you think you are more-holy than they who only 'fellowship in the chapel' two times a year? Are you as the Pharisee, thinking you deserve G*d's gift more than they? Why go to church at all, if G*d is everywhere & you are more-important to others (with whom you COULD be fellowshipping) elsewhere? It's because at church you are fellowshipping to raise the light of Christ to the tower-top (whereas elsewhere you are fellowshipping for worldly reasons ... not necessarily 'bad' reasons, just reasons 'irrespective of Our Father.') Maybe those people don't live close-enough to go every week (when you do ... maybe they go to a different service). Maybe they think they don't need the public reminder that G*d is-in control and -'very-very large.'

You did not understand my discussion at all. First of all most of these people who went to church on Easter could go to church every sunday if they wished. My point of this discussion was how they take all the seats from the regular people who go to church every sunday. I don't go to church at all. I will only go to a chapel to pray by myself. Otherwise I pray at home each and everyday. I have heard from many people who are regulars at church that they can't stand the holidays because so many hypocrites show up only on those days and take all the seats. I'm just glad my parents got seats because they are in their late 70's. It would have been wrong for all of these people showing up that never go to church and end up taking the seats of the people who go every sunday. I'm sure it happened somewhere in some church somewhere yesterday.

Hi lelin, I think most people so busy with their business and money, so they forget to go to the church every Sunday. I think, they are not obey to their religion, their religion just for identity that they have religion, so they respect to their religion just on the great holiday such as Natal and Easter. Yes, there are many people that think the religion is not important in their life.

I'm not sure its that they are forgetting I just think they don't go because they feel they don't have too. My point of this whole discussion was to see if anyone knew the reason why people feel the need to go to church only twice a year. Crowding the churches and leaving no seats for the people who go to church every week. God Bless!
