Its necessity, not discrimination. Put yourself in the shoes of the customer who would be talking to you. They're usually calling in because there is some problem. They're already stressed out and then they have to speak to someone they can't understand. Just practice more on your speaking. Your writing in English is really good so it shouldn't be too hard for you.

TeleTech does not require you to be in perfect English since it's only our second language. Although at least you must have a good command of English. You need to pass series of interviews and exams then you'll have a training for less than a month. Call Centers require their employees and trainees to speak in English on certain areas other than the workstation. In that way people can improve their self confidence on speaking that language and at the same time improve.
They have many great benefits. They have a very nice working environment and so on. One of the top employer as far as I know. You'll be hired within the day immediately if you're selected and if not, you can re-apply after 6 months (As far as I can recall). Have a great day!

I worked in a call center that caters to local consumers, and in our days, you just have to know the basic command of the english language and its not necessary that you would have to be very fluent in the language, you just have to understand it and be able to converse in it because even if its local, there are still cases when you caan and must be talking to a customer that is conversant in english. =)

From what I know, all agents require to have good speaking and writing skills in English because it is the Language that most people use especially when taking in calls from people who may be from another country. There is indeed options of wanting to listen to Filipino instructions when making a call to a certain company, but the knowledge of English is a must.

Call center agents here in the Philippines really require their employees to be fluent in English. I do not think that they are discriminating those who are not fluent since they are hiring people that are high school graduates as long as they are fluent in English. There are lots of companies here that do not require to be a good English speaker but if you really want to be a call center agent here, try enrolling in schools that offer English proficiency.

fearlessgara, if your talking about call center companies that caters services to international countries... well there is none. Just like what the other respondents here said, you'll be talking to native speakers and they can sometimes be rude just because you don't sound like them even if you have good grasp of English Grammar or talking really good English. So be glad if you don't hire your because you of your fluency, it only means you wont survive out there. That is the reality of call center jobs. Beside, English language is very much a criteria for most of the jobs that pays good cash whether call center or not. Even local call center now a days require English fluency because they want to make sure that if an English speaking person or the Krissy type of English their agent would survive and not just call for supervisor's help. Even local companies where all clients are filipino their would still be 25% that speaks English to show that they are elite and educated. I suggest try Free English training or call center training from TESDA. Try applying or asking people that works in there to have an idea.
I am just being honest here.

Call centers really requires their agents to be fluent in English. That's logical because they will be dealing with foreigners whose main language is English.
Though , a training is being done before one gets hired. They are though the basics and the accents.

Agree. It's part of the work description. It's not discriminatory in my view since they still accept people even with a little difficulty in speaking straight English. But if you really can't adapt, then, it's sensible or the company to likely that applicant go.

Hi fearlessgara!
To tell you the truth, No Call Center here in the Philippines will here someone who do have a below average communication skills.
But the Techinacal Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) provides a Free Call Center Training. on 2011, I was so desperate that I badly need a call center training. I passed the training and after 2 months I applied in a call center and I got hired.
Perfect practice will help you.

Hi fearlessgara!
As far as I know, companies with that kind of work are very particular with that aspect. Well, i could not say because I never worked in a call center but I think, it is but necessary as we have to deal with clients and some came form other countries.
I even remember my sister get a training to speak English in British accent because this is needed in her job.
Have a wonderful day.
