Hi emily, I believe you need to seek doctor's advise. It is best that you visit ENT doctor and get a proper advise. Hearing is utmost important for oneself. If you continue to scratch your ears with cotton buds or ear digger, you may accidentally damage your ear drum. So, you need to take precaution on that.

Yes, I also having the intention of visiting the ENT doctor when I am available. I am thankful for your concern and advices. You are right, using cotton buds (q-tips) and ear digger may hurt my ear drums if I am not careful. Thanks for your effort in participation.

Hi emily7339, i have the same problem too. I always clean my ears with cotton buds every time after shower. However, i often have the tingling sensation in my ears and make me want to dig it to feel better. I keep feeling like there's something crawling inside my ear, but when i dig it, there is nothing. I would like to get some solutions too for my ears...

Well, I am having same problem so I may not be able to help you, haha! The only way I know now from one of the mylotters here is that she suggested "to go visit the ENT doctor"... Yes, you are right each time it itches I could feel something inside triggers it but after digging found nothing. I used to clean my ears with cotton bud too each time after shower and I am very sure my ears are clean, hehe. Let's hope there are other mylotters could help.

I don't know how old you are, but my mother had itchy ears when her sugars were up because of her diabetes. My ears just itch, but I have a lot of allergies as well and suspect a bit of the itchiness might be caused by allergies.

I've always had itchy ears. And I tried to not swab out my ears. That ended up with a HUGE wad of wax coming out after a shower. It wrapped around the cotton swab and then some! And talk about itching! I gave up not cleaning them then, I obviously had too much wax production to just leave it alone. Besides, when my sister was a child, she was having trouble hearing and it turned out to be wax "plugs" against her eardrums that the doc had to take out.

Oh, this is something new to me. I guess may be I could go to the pharmacy to do a blood test for my sugar level. I am sorry to hear that you are having ear itch now. So, do you take any steps to get rid of the itchiness? I believe it is hard to deal with sllergies. Thanks for your valuable information and happy mylotting!

That means you're doing to meet up with an old friend. The itch could be the beginning of a irritation. I would be careful. Don't use them too much. I only use them like every other day or so after I shower. Too much can cause irritation and problems. I would check with your doctor next time you are in.

You're welcome. Vitamin A for the skin also. If you put lotion on after you get out of the shower after blotting your skin and it is damp that may help also.

I think perhaps the dryness may be the cause of itchiness but I not certain about that. I will take your advice not to do it too often to prevent causing irritation and problems. Thank you for your concern and good advice.

Hi emily, I only have "itchy ears" when I have got an ear infection which I have a bit of right now its the worst pain I can think of. Actually my Doctor told me to use a baby cream on the top of those cotton bud things instead of using water from the shower. It seems that water from the shower does not come from a very good source. I have not doubted him since then as I have not had too many ear problems since I took notice. Allergy is my main problem and inflamation in the outside ear is what I usually get but not very often but it hurts like crazy for a day or two.xxx

Hi emily I have had to get up and drink something warm to take the bothersome pain off then it stays off for the rest of the day. Truth to tell I did not know that the water from the shower could be of a dubious quality either and it could have been giving me those itchy ears and inflamed outer ear as well. Baby cream is a very good one and you only have to use a little on top of the cotton bud and I only clean the outer part not trying to enter the inner ear part most times. I clean them but less that way he reckons I am more protected and not to let the water of the shower to get into my ears at all if I can help it not so easy is it? Hope you find a solution for your problem too. Could it be a seasonal allergy that happens too you know your nose gets inflamed and your ears as well my youngest used to get that a lot.xxx

I am sorry that you suffered pain as well, besides the itchiness. I am glad that it has been healed. It is logical to me too that shower water may not be as clean. Probably the baby cream has some lubricant as well so can prevent dryness. I think dryness in the ear canal may cause some itchiness. Thank you very much for your valuable information and happy mylotting!

I am so sorry for not receiving your email notification on this respond. I do not know why. As I go through once again my post today, only I notice your sharing . I came to know from some of the mylotter's sharing that one could also use olive oil. I think we may also try that but with little amount just to wet the ear canal will do . Thank you for your participation !

This is called ' Otitis externa, or swimmer's ear, is a fungal or bacterial infection of the outer ear, which, despite its name, is not limited to swimmers. Anyone can develop the problem; it can be caused by shampooing or showering or any other activity that leaves the out ear canal damp or wet. Symptoms range from mild itching to pain. Swimmer's ear can be avoided by drying out the ears thoroughly or by being careful to shake all the water out of them. If necessary, a few drops of surgical spirits should be put into each ear--this dries the ear canal.

Thank you for your futher research on this problems and sharing. So, it means I have to always keep my outer ear canal dry all the time to prevent fungal or bacterial infection. However, I do not swim and perhaps it got wet during shampooing and showering. So, I will take note and be more careful in future. I really appreciate your effort to present this valuable information here.

Do you clean your ear wax remover before you use it? I hope that you do observe this hygiene practice especially when they are shared with other members of the family. All it takes is one member to have an ear infection and the rest of the family members will be infected. You need to determine if your constant ear irritations is an ear infection which has symptoms of swelling, flaking, redness and constant wetness on the irritation site. So, you should consider these before you scratch your ear with a ear wax remover. Other than an ear infection, certain skin or medical conditions could cause your ears to itch like eczema, contact dermatitis or scabies. So, again refrain from scratching at the first moment for you will only be making your ears more sensitive.

I bought many packets of q-tips and use it for once and discarded it. I never shared with anyone in the family and never re-used it. It is always the new one. I always try do it gently. A year ago I did scratch it a little too hard and it bleeds. But after few weeks, it stopped and healed. Thank you for your efforts in responding to my post with good valuable informations!

Just wait until you get swimmers ear from using those q-tips to scratch with. Boy is that fun! A few drops of olive oil might help relieve the itching , but definitely see a doctor.

Be careful and don't scratch too hard or put the cotton buds too far in. Good luck and I hope your ear gets better soon.

Well, I am using either the q-tips (we called it cotton bud here) or ear digger to scratch the itchy areas. haha! Oh, olive oil could relive the itchyness? Probably it will work as my ear canals are a bit dry. I may have a drop of olive oil on the q-tips and apply it over my ear canal. I guess that will be fine to get rid of the dryness. Yeah, you are right the final resort and teh best solution is to see a doctor [em]happy[/.em].

Is it on the outside of the ear or inside? If it is the skin, then might it be eczema? you can use some steroid cream to relieve the itch. Just consult a pharmacist. If it is inside, yes, see a specialist.

if you will trust my suggestion I use Hydrogen peroxide. this is also what my ear doc uses when I have to have my ear clean. Dab a cotton bud to the solution, then gently (not roughly) dab in your ear canal. You will feel a different sensation, but it is okay just go through with it and you will feel the effect.

Hi Emily It is a very good idea you see your doctor, how long has this been going on for? Do you find it is getting worse instead of better, I would make a doctor's appointment it may be something simple but anything that persists always seek your doctor.

My mom experienced this. She kept going to the doctor and they would perscribe meds. Finally a doctor looked inside and there were extra bones growing. She had to have them cut out. She could barely walk for days after because she was so dizzy. The doctor said that debris from cleaning with cotton and things like dust build up and the bones form around them. It was pretty crazy but she feels much better now, after having the chronic itchy ears for 2 years. Headvto your doctor!

I am glad for your mom as the doctor diagonsed the proper treatment for her. I guess it is also good for me to visit the ENT doctor just to make sure nothing serious is going on. Thanks for your great contributions and respond!

It would be much better if you have it checked by an EENT. Just to be sure. And don't attempt to clean your ears more than necessary as the natural oils that your ear produces may be affected.

Well, I do not remember in the past have had itchy ears. But I believe that it is a problem that affects many people, even if here on Mylot, you are the first to talk about this problem. I think I understood, reading your discussion that you do the best for the health of your ears, keeping them clean. But despite this, the problem persists. If I were you I would a visit to a audiologist. Perhaps he / she would know to solve the problem, perhaps with some specific product.

I think you are causing your own itchy ears. They get dry inside from the q-tips. That's what you mean by earbuds, right? I suffered a lot from itchy ear canals and it was from using Q-tips in my ears. I quit for about 2 months. It took some time for my ear canals to build up the very men that keeps the canals lubricated. Now I only use them about once a month. I don't have anymore itchy ears.

I do not use 'earbuds' but we called it cotton buds here and it is actually "q-tips". I did not use the q-tips unnecessary except when it is itchy. So, each time it itches I will use the q-tips or ear digger to gently scratch the area. As I noticed each time I wash my hair my ear canal is wet. So, I will use the q-tips to dry my ear canals. Probably my ear canals are a bit dry and I wonder is there any oilment that I could apply. I appireciate your response and have a nice day!

I've had my ears block up with wax build up. It is not fun. So I regularly let warm water from the shower run in and out to remove excess wax. I find they can become itchy too and reach for a Qtip but try to be careful. It is better than the alternative my finger.
@emily7339 (1337)

2 Apr 13
It is true better not to use the finger as our fingers may have in contact with germs. I tempted to use fingers many times, but it did not work as my fingers are to big to go through my ear canal, it cannot reach to the itchy area. hahaha! Thank you for giving me good tips on how to get rid of excess wax during the shower. However, the water may go right in to the ear drum. Wouldn't that risky?

Hi, I don't have this experience frequently. But when I have itchy feeling in my ears I feel very restless. I use ear buds. But I am afraid of itching my ears because I think there would be pain in my ears. You should consult specialist and he would recommend some drops which are useful to get rid from itching ears.

I think you should go to the doctor and see if you might have ear mites or something. Constantly itching ears is pretty unusual. Some of these things are so tiny they are not visible to the human eye. I have never had itching ears like that. I have had itchy eyes and when I went to the doctor I had an infection. I think you should check that out.
