Have you guys seen this movie? Yeah it's an anime movie about a girl who can leap(literally) through time.
Anyway, I was really bothered by the ending. I have searched through forums online to find an explanation. And I realized that it was meant to be ambiguous so that people can interpret the ending the way they want you. it doesn't matter who is wrong and who is right. The point is to be creative and figure out a possible ending to the movie.
What can you say about this movie? What do you think of the ending?
If you haven't seen it and you are so bored right now you have a lot of time to kill, go to youtube and search for the movie there.

I like the movie basically because of the story itself, the characters and the soundtrack. LOL. I like how everything was put together. I like how the movie teaches us the importance of time and how important it is to value those people who are around you and face everyone's emotion openly rather than running away from it. I am a very emotional person and I cried when I watched that movie. Even when I hear song from the movie- Kawaranai Mono, I remember the movie and I tend to relate to it, not to mention the artist really relayed her emotions while singing the song. The ambiguous part of it though is something that I did not like to much. I understand some people may love that part because they can make their own conclusions and imply as much as they want but I'd rather hear the ending that the author sets then deconstruct and reconstruct my own.

That's so right! In the end, it was good that Makoto, the girl, learned a lot and matured. She became more decisive and courages to face whatever comes ahead. It's a good story about growing up.
Odd thing is I like the ending, because it was ambiguous but sweet. I never really thought of anything bad happening after the ending. The way Makoto smiles, for whatever reason, is a good indication that the ending is a happy one, although it is possibly bittersweet. We can say this is not a tragic story. It's telling us to face the uncertainty of the future with hope and that is the reason why they ended the movie that way, I think.

Yeah, it did not any tragic ending but I'd just love it when authors of certain books or perhaps writer for the story lines or director would plainly introduce the endings as they want it to be leaving no questions unanswered in the end. Whether it's bad or good, I can accept it. I love deconstructing stories as it is presented then creating a whole new story from it. I'm glad you loved watching the movie. Try Princess Mononoke as well or perhaps Spirited Away.. They both have good story lines as well.

Yes. But I think if they ended it differently, the message they wanted to give like 'facing uncertainty with a positive attitude' wouldn't be as strong.
LOL, I watched most of Miyazaki's films! I love Ashitaka and Haku and Howl. I love Miyazaki's main male characters because they are so sweet, strong and charming. They are the type of guys that we don't often see in our world.
Anyway, those films have great story lines. They are simple and complex at the same time, not to mention, the art and the graphics were cool.

Hi!
I have not seen the movie, you are talking about. I think the Director of the movie would have lost the plot in the end, he just could not find an appropriate and logical ending the movie, therefore, he would have left it unfinished.
Let it be, you could write an ending to the movie, they way you want it to end and send it to the Director of the movie.

If possible, will check. Thanks for the inputs that the movie is based on a famous Japense novel.
If the movie won some awards then the decision of the Director of movie to keep an open ending must have been viewed positively.
You could choose to write an ending the way you want.

You can check the movie on youtube when you have free time or whenever you want to.
Hehe, the movie is based on a famous novel in Japan. i think they intended to end it the way it did so people can reflect more on the movie. I think it is up to the viewers to come up with the best ending that suited the movie, be it sad or a happy ending. What matters is that it makes viewers reflect and think. They left the ending open to interpretation on purpose. Besides, the movie was released 2006 and it actually won some awards, so there's no way to change it now.

Oh yeah. When I was searching for a top anime movie, I found this along with Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and Paprika. I just forgot what URL it is. Anyway, I saw the trailer and for me its good. The animation is good and I think the story is good even though I have not yet watched it. I just feel that the story is good but, if I have time, I would watch it but now, I am still a little bit busy.

The ending of this movie has quite an impact it can't be forgotten easily. It's one of my favorite parts of the movie actually. ^_^ The art is simple, the characters are realistic, I think, very human and relatable.

I wasn't bored and didn't have a lot of time to kill, but I went and watched it anyway. I enjoyed it and don't feel that I wasted any time. I love time travel stories and while I felt that this one was a "tweenie" type love story, I still enjoyed it.
