I am an avid fan of singing competitions like American Idol and The Voice and if there's one thing I've noticed, most contestants joining have a common denominator: winning the competition is their ticket to help their family.
I have nothing against those people who joins and uses their God-given talent. They have that so why not make the most out of it, right? And they'll never know what's in store for them unless they give it a try. But come to think of it, there are millions of talented singers out there and in a competition, only one winner will emerge victorious. And winning does not even guarantee success and good life since every year, singing competitions will always find a better and more talented singer who is more appealing than the previous winners.
Anyway, it's just an observation. Feel free to share on what you think about singing competitions :)

I think those people who selected by American Idol even for just having golden ticket and eliminated, I think they are just lucky people, and as you said many people are might be have more talent, have a better voices, but they are not become famous or something, btw I was joining some kind like American Idol audition in my country, Indonesian Idol, and i failed, i was kind of sad, but yeah, maybe that my luck is not there.

That's one way of looking at it. It might be their lucky day that the judges love their 30-second performance or maybe they're just really that good :)
You tried auditioning? Wow. What happened? Maybe it's not yet your time. Try improving your talent and who knows, you might be the next Indonesian Idol :)

Singing is my frustration but God has not given me the beautiful voice , anyway we have our own God's gift that needs to develop, i hope that one of my kids has a beautiful voice. thank you for this topic!

I use to be a big American Idol fan but this year I was disappointed with the judges and have stayed away. I'm a big fan of "The Voice" and just love it because its all about the voice and not what you look like. Yes, only one person can win but many times the others who don't win get recording contracts so it is worth it at the end. Look at Jennifer Hudson she didn't win American Idol but she now has won alot of awards from an Oscar to Grammys and she is doing great. Alot better then some of its winners.

Me too. I just don't like Nicki Minaj. And I think that Simon, Paula and Randy are still the best judges in Idol. I don't know why they have to leave.
Anyway, you're right. Some contestants, even if they didn't win, were still able to launch their career and are very successful now. In fact, the non-winners have better careers than the winners. Although it won't happen in most cases. Again, there's still no guarantee of success when you join competitions such as this.

I agree even x factor is the same. But those dreams is what makes those shows so good.

Yes, everyone of them has a great story to tell. Makes those kind of shows very fun to watch.

And that's what makes the contestants believable too. Especially when they have an interesting story that is different from the others, the tendency is that people will fall for that person. I just hope producers of singing competitions are not taking advantage of this just to earn and make their show popular.

Whenever I watch singing competitions like The Voice, I could not help but envy those contestants who have been endowed with great singing voice. I have always wanted to sing ala-Whitney Houston but I gracefully admit that I can only be me when I sing...a mediocre singer. Nevertheless, dreaming is free for all, so as watch those singers who could really sing, I envision myself singing powerfully also. Haha! Singing competitions are good. When singers get discovered via singing contests, most of the winners with the right attitude will most certainly have a good life and a future.

I can't help but envy them too. Those contestants are really great and talented. And I do hope that once they win, or at least get the necessary exposure that will make record producers notice them, they'll have the life that they've always wanted and be able to help their families.

I am big fan of singing or talent competitions. But qualities of these competitions in my country is really horrible. That´s why I watch rather American versions online. And I understand those people, who hope, that winning or participating in such a competition will change their lives. Because it can be their only chance to became famous, earn a lot of money and so on. For example in my country is really difficult to became a popular singer and this can help a lot. And when you have interesting family background story, people will like you more and send more votes :D I hope you can understand me :)

What made you say that? For sure ere are a lot of talented singers out there, they just haven't been discovered yet. Or maybe, they're just shy :)
Athough winning a singing competition can be a ticket to a successful life, I still think there's no assurance. Every year, more and more great talent will be discovered and the reigning winner's popularity might die down eventually, especially if s/he was not able to record great songs that people will love.

Yes I love watching those shows. I sort of wish they had "The Voice earlier or later as I also like to watch Dancing with the stars. As it is I alternate between the two and catch up as able. I also like America's got talent though that is more than just singing.

I see it just as one way of presenting your talent to the wider audience. A lot of times the ones who didn't win at the end have better careers than the winners (take Chris Daughtry for instance etc.). The judges and their - at times - stupid and very biased comments aside, these are still very positive shows I believe. At least TV does something positive for a change and presents real talent and hard work - instead of broadcasting some filthy reality show.

Well compared to reality shows, singing competitions are much better to watch. It is a good venue to discover great talent since there are many out there with insane, incredible voice. Although you can't help but notice that most of them audition for the show, hoping for a better life, and I totally understand that.

I am an avid fan of singing competitions too. I think singing competitions is a game of chance. One can not only rely on his talent because no matter how talented you are but you don't have that like-able factor, you won't win the competition. Because, most competitions includes not only the judges votes but also the texters votes.
I agree, winning does not guarantee success and good life. You are lucky if you are the winner but considering if you lose, I don't know if you still are lucky. Popularity is most of the times the reason of contestants I guess.

Im going to be the stick in the mud for this topic. When American Idol first came out I thought it was kinda interesting, but now it just seems like singing competitions have been overdone. Every once in awhile I find them to be ok. But Im afraid I have grown tired of them. Too many have just become a popularity contest and less emphasis on pure talent. Someone could, in theory, win the competition and not be the best, all they have to do is be very very popular. Especially, if the general public is involved in voting who will stay and who will go. To me too many things are becoming popularity contests and so that is my main gripe about them and why I dont really like singing competitions anymore. I guess afterall it is a matter of opinion about it too.
On the other hand I do kinda like Singing Bee where all you have to be is accurate when singing the song as it dont matter if the contestants dont sing it on key.

I completely agree with you! Take a look at the Scotty guy who won Idol 2 seasons ago. He's not good compared to the his rival but he still won. And most of the Idol winners are good-looking. They do have talent, but I think there are other contestants who deserve to win but booted out early in the show. So yeah, it is slowly becoming a popularity contest rather than a singing competition.
