Does tobacco kills?

We all hear that daily and watch it on TVs that tobacco product kills. But I have seen many cases where people are having cigarettes and drinking habits and they die normally without any illness or pain. I am not saying that it doesn't harm but does it fully being responsible for death. Or it has a bad name because it is a big wastage of money?
