Does anyone know how to go about publishing your own book. I recently had some company publish one of my children's books, but I see that it is not going well. I'm a little disturbed because I spent so much money and I don't think I will ever get it back.

Publishing your own book is something that almost anyone can do these days with very little outlay, and certainly without paying for a minimum quantity to be printed. Unfortunately, there are still many 'vanity publishers' who will charge you a considerable amount to print and bind your book. Very often, that is where their obligation ends: it is up to you to store your stock and to market the book and, of course, that it really the hardest thing for an individual to do.
As long as you are able to understand the fairly simple formatting instructions given, there is no reason why you should pay anything more than a minimal fee for your book to be published, marketed and printed on demand when orders are received.
You should look at the self-publishing facilities provided by companies such as:
Lulu.com - http://www.lulu.com
Amazon.com - http://www.amazon.com/gp/seller-account/mm-summary-page.html?topic=200260520
Smashwords.com - http://www.smashwords.com/
You will have the option to publish both as e-books (in Kindle and other formats) and as a printed book which is printed quickly, professionally and in high quality only as and when it is ordered. Many books (and many more than is obvious when reading through an online publisher's lists) are printed this way.
You may have to pay a small fee for an ISBN number but this is almost essential if you want to market your book effectively. Booksellers (both online and offline) cannot list your book unless it has an ISBN.
Even though publishing companies such as the above will list your book on their pages, it is still necessary for you to spend some time in marketing it. There are many ways of doing this. An obvious way is to write a blog or articles to be published online but you should also submit press releases to local newspapers, journals and websites which specialise in the subject of your book. Since you only pay for individual copies to be printed and they can even be sent directly from the publisher to any address you choose, sending review copies to suitable journals for review becomes fairly easy (you just need to research the names and addresses of people likely to publish reviews of your book).

Well, I once saw an article on Wikinut about self-publishing. You can check for Wikinut self publishing and that might help.
