Okay, how much is a bone sticking out of a leg going to bother you?

Does that seem like a silly question? Well OF COURSE it's going to bother you. A lot of you know, especially if you live in the States, that this weekend a college basketball player named Kevin Ware went up to block a shot (in the NCAA tournament against Duke), came down, and as a result of how he came down, his bone was sticking out of his leg. I mean right where you could see it. I didn't see the replay when it first happened. And once the network grasped how bad the injury was they quit showing the replay. But you can find it online, and you can also find pictures of him laying on the court with his bone sticking out of his skin. For a few days I debated whether to find the photo. I was curious, but you can't "unsee" things, and I didn't want the image to haunt me. But I ended up finding it. And it didn't bother me. Didn't make me want to throw up (a few players on his team almost threw up, but that's because he landed right beside their bench and they got a front row seat to the injury), and it isn't going to gross me out if I happen to see it again. Whereas my sister was grossed out entirely, and my dad absolutely refuses to look because he is so squeamish. So I guess I'm asking, how strong is your constitution? I can watch an actual surgery on TV and not be bothered. My dad can't stand to see any of it. I guess I just have a strong stomach. Incidentally, I've never seen so many men cry at one time. Players from his time, players from the opposing team, and men in the crowd watching the game. If you're wondering, he had immediate surgery on his broken leg, and is already released and walking on crutches. They estimate it will be a year before he is fully recovered. *Don't misunderstand. The injury bothered me in the sense that I hate to see someone suffer. It's just how gruesome it was didn't bother my ability to view it.

I was very surprised when he said he honestly didn't feel pain. Then I heard Joe Thiesman talk about when he played football, and the same injury had happened to him. You may remember him, he was a quarterback. But he was before my time so I don't remember what team. Anyway, my dad remembers seeing on TV as it happened. And the bone was sticking out, the opposite way his leg should have been pointing. And Joe Thiesman said he felt agony in his leg, and then right after that it was like his body went into shock, and he didn't feel a thing. Kevin Ware said he never felt anything. He said he only realized something was wrong when his coach reached down to help him up, but then caught sight of his leg. He said his coaches eyes bugged out and that's when he knew something was really wrong.

Ohhhh yuk! Just the title of your discussion makes me cringe..ewwww! I'm not a good one for these things so thank goodness I didn't ever want to be a doctor...I would have never made it. I couldn't even be a vet tech, lol! I did not hear about this poor guy but after reading the discussion and people crying seeing him is enough for me. When I see stuff like that (and I assure you it's by accident) I feel the pain and just get sick to my stomach. My sister is like you...she enjoys watching surgery and all that bloody stuff, haha, I can't. I couldn't even watch Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

I don't like movies with gore like Texas Chainsaw magazine. I mean there is violence in movies, and then there is gore in movies. Which is so gross.

It's funny, your discussion has nothing to do with that movie but that's the first thing I thought of, lol! I just think it was all the blood and guts..ugh. Maybe that's how I view surgery, hah!

That is something I would have to turn away from....I have a weak stomach. It's funny though if you were in an accident I would probably be the best most calm person around....after it's over however I am the biggest mess you have ever seen. I held a man's scalp together once until the ambulance got there....literally held it so there was no gap! Then I passed out after he was in the ambulance! LOL

Mine, or somebody else's? Either way, I'd probably pass out. Yikes.

Well, I saw my own bone once, but it was not sticking out. My leg just split open and you could see the "meat" and bone. I didn't freak out. But perhaps if my leg bone was sticking out I would have had a much different reaction.

My son told me about this, and showed me a picture.. I only snuck a quick glance at it.. so quick that I couldn't tell which portion of his leg the bone was coming out from.. upper near the knee or lower near the ankle.. but that was enough for me to get the gist of how bad the injury was. Wow! I feel bad just because of how young he was. I was telling hubby.. it's not like this kid was in the NBA already and making his millions.. he's a college kid with a bright future to look forward to.. and that injury may have ended it for him. I know they say he'll make a full recovery, but what if he doesn't? You never know sometimes. Sports can be so dangerous.. I worry about my own son who is into every sport that exists.

I think it's possible they have insurance on him. Someone on espn mentioned it. More families of college athletes are doing that. It's for athletes that are projected to go pro. And if an injury keeps them from going pro, that player can collect on the insurance policy. And the bone sticking out was pretty much right below the knee.

I saw what happened to that poor basketball player & I admit that I was sick to my stomach. I kept seeing him break his leg over & over again in my mind & I wanted to cry for him because it looked so terribly painful. To have something like that happen to your teammate when it could have just as easily been one of them is more then enough to make anyone cry. I am so glad to hear that he's going to be okay though. That is good news indeed.

You know what is weird, is that he said he didn't feel any pain. He said his body must have been in shock because he felt no pain at all. At least when it first happened. I mean on the way to the hospital he might have gotten feeling back.

You should probably be a nurse. I would not like to see it and would not do well. However I can clean up blood when others have been hurt. I would not make a good nurse.

Is hard for me to watch something like that too because I feel really bad for the player and the pain that he was probably experiencing.

Ewww, glad I didn't see it, that would make me shiver and possibility throw up, I can't stand the sight of blood, let alone a bone. I am cringing just thinking about it...

I actually hadn't bothered to look at the video until now. My cousins were talking about it and wanted me to watch it with them but I couldn't, imagining the pain that guy must have felt. I've looked online for the news about it and it's good to know that he is alright.

o, I couldn't do it. It actually took me a few months before I looked at my own battle scars in my chest and stmach area. Horrible. No, I would have cried and possibly would have thrown up too. I am so sorry for the young man. I did see him on the news today adn I hope that his career is not ruined. I have a very weak stomach
