Nepotism-Fair or Unfair?

Nepotism is favoritism shown to relatives or close friends by those in power. Those who are in good positions try to do favors to their loved ones. But is it fair? i hear many people giving speeches that life is a race, you need to work hard to get ahead of others. If its a race then is it a fair one?During one of my voyages we stopped by in Bristol, there in a cafe me and my workmates were having heated discussion about it.An old lady was listening to us patiently and she interrupted us and made a solid statement. She said that most of us are hypocrites ,if we know someone who can do favors to us ,we take the shortcut, otherwise we just bash Nepotism.Sometimes people relate it to destiny too, like its the destiny of someone that his/her father is a big politician or bureaucrat or someone with lot of power.Nepotism has been there for long, we all know this system where son/daughter of a king gets the throne, who decide that son or daughter of king are more deserving and efficient than others?

It had been practiced before and still ongoing. I guess we can not beat that culture/tradition unless the guy in position exercise what is norm. As the saying says " it is not a matter of what you know but whom you know" is commonly practiced today. If you have a padrino or relative, the probability of getting the position or anything for that matter is absolutely sure. I just hope this common mentality of some be altered.

That is right, may be some of those realize that they should give the chance to deserving ,but due to their attachment to loved ones they get helpless. Thanks a lot for your response.

I think nepotism is utterly unfair. Especially in the workplace. A boss shouldn't promote an employee just because he is a relative. Even today we see people around the world do this. I don't believe in a law banning from employing relatives or even promoting them as employees, but it needs to be justified. The employee needs to be promoted based on merit and not because he or she is related to their manager.

You are absolutely correct. But the problem is that there are few people who would give the chance to deserving instead of their loved ones.Someone who has earned his position and power by working hard is expected to help people who are just like him, hard working and deserving, but unfortunately his priorities changes after getting the power. Thanks a lot for your response.

That's a very good point, when you push back someone who is deserving, you are just ending the possibilities of valuable contribution him/her could have made. Thanks a lot for your response.

Hi, Nepotism is very unfair. But we can find it everywhere. The people who have wealth and position can take the advantage of their position. Deserving people are badly affected by this. Some are very lucky that they born with silver spoon in their mouth. Their life is very smooth and no worries for them.

If you are on the position to choose between your relative and that of not for a certain position, what will you do? Whom will you choose? I am in a government service and I can see how it goes around. I was even told before I get the job that my chances is a mere 1% because that is the only chance that an outsider can get into the organization. I understand them but I tried anyway. I got that 1%. Have a wonderful day!

Its great that you were rewarded for your hard work .Like you correctly mentioned deserving people gets very less chances.Sad thing is that there are many instances that a self made person who got position and power without any help ,favors relatives and not someone deserving. Its like i fought the war and got the throne now my only my children and grandchildren are entitled to rule, this rule is still valid. Thanks a lot for your response.
