How have the changes that Dr. M. L. King made impact your life?
Today, April 4th marks the 45th year of Dr. Martin Luther King's death. I want to take time to celebrate his life and legacy, for all the things he and his collegues did to shape America and the rest of the world affected. Although it was all before my time and your time for most of you reading this, I recently make a return visit to the Lorraine Motel Civil Rights Museum in Memphis and was amazed to see all the pieces of history that were left behind. His bible, photos of him, his family and friends, were there. There were even remnants of the room where his assassin, James Earl Ray, stood. Ray's gun and toiletries were on display.
There were documentary films and other museums to recognize other past and present activists. Finally, was the balcony where he and his collegues stood when the shots rang out. He had just delivered his famous "Mountaintop" speech the night before to defend the rights of Memphis sanitary workers. As we walked up the stairs, "Precious Lord" was sung by his old friend, Mahalia Jackson. When I look at the opportunities we all have now that were once seen as "far-fetched", I am grateful for Dr. King's legacy and others after him who have made even the smallest improvements to make life a little easier for the next generation. It was truly educational and a sight to see, so I encourage each of you to check it out one day.
