What would you have done?

I have this tiny 3.5Kg sweet mixed dog. I have her since she was 1 and a half months old, and she's a one year old grown up puppy now.
Today I had to go help with this big dinner (500 people) for about half an hour, and I thought it would be great to take my dog on a walk on my way to do it. So I took her on a walk, and then left her outside for a little while, went into the dinner building, and thought I'll continue the walk later on.
It went well... until I heard her scream from outside the building about 10 minutes later. I rushed to the windows and saw these two kids (6-8 y/o) about one meter away from her. I realized I know them, they are the grand kids of a woman I know, and they always follow me and my dog when they see us on their visits here. As I ran outside I looked at my dog and saw her curling, looking terrified from the boy that stood next to her, and I felt angry.
My dog is always so gentle with children, so I knew she didn't do anything bad, and yet- the kid was somehow for some reason- terrorizing her. I shouted at him- "leave her alone!" and he immediately went backward, looking surprised. I suppose he didn't see me coming at him. "I was just passing by" he answered. "I didn't do anything".
"Yeah well, she is obviously afraid of you. Leave her alone." I replied as I got there.
The boy shrugged and started walking away from us, so I came back inside the building after comforting my dog.
My brother who helped organizing dinner with me told me later on as we talked about it that he saw those kids throw stuff at my dog and that he went outside and threatened them to leave her alone.
I guess I wont let these kids get close to her again... but what do you think, would you have done something different?

I would protect what I love no matter what happened. I would let the people/animals in my life know that I love them and want to protect them no matter what. I would never leave them wondering, I would never play games with them and I would certainly never have the cops pick them up (people I love) and throw them in jail just to prove a point. Pointless, stupid and hateful. Yes, I still stand by my own convictions, I would never ever hurt anyone or anything I love intentionally. I would protect the people in my life to a fault.

Oh my god, so insane of these kids who are behaving like this with a cute innocent dog, in fact i would have lost my temper and would have thrashed those kids had i been at your place. no body has any right to deal with the innocent animals at least they r innocent and when they r not doing any harm to others why they should be messed up by others.

Hi Jimeny,
Well, I probably would not have come right out and told them to leave the dog alone not knowing exactly what took place. I would have asked them what was going on in case it was someone or something else. Still, it sounds like you had them pegged right. Since your brother verified what happened and it sounds as if he spoke to them and they still continued on, I think you should say something to the grandmother about the incident

I spoke with some dog owners from my neighborhood and apparently these kids have a habit of throwing stuff at dogs and cats. I didn't notice that sort of behavior because I am usually at my dog's side or I leave her at home... and when I saw these kids during my dog walks- they were quite charming and interested in my dog in... a nice way.
One of the dog owners told me these kids come from a religious society that despise pets, so what they know is that dogs are unholy and that it's the righteous thing to throw stuff at them. I don't know how much truth is in what he said, but I guess there is a bit of it inside.
Thanks for your reply. I WILL talk to their grandmother. :)

Yes you are right that sometimes pets create disturbance. You must make them a separate place where they live and eat and don't allow them even when here is no party at your home inside the room and building. You know pets sometimes create much problems for us so, we should keep away them.

But my dog is well behaved, especially around children. She was tied next to my bicycle, and had less than one meter to move. It's the kids that approached her, she couldn't have walked toward them as she was tied.
I see my dog as a very dear relative. In fact, my whole family does as well. We can't tolerate her being harm the same way we can't tolerate a family member being harm. I'm astonished you think pets bring troubles... Really. My dog is sweet, loving and fun, and I would never treat her like what you said.

I would have done the same thing, actually. I have a 6 year old Boston Terrier and he is as sweet as can be and has been harassed in the past by past roommates of mine. It had caused him to be skittish and shy for a long while, but thankfully, I was able to get me and him out of that situation and its been two years and he is a much happier dog.
If those boys are constantly abusing your dog, perhaps you may need to talk to their parents about it. Any child that thinks it is ok to cause harm to an animal are most likely to grow and become criminals. I hope your dog is doing ok. I do not care how old someone is, animal abuse is not ok and for a child to do so, their parents must be made aware of this action.
