Fear of passing the secrete to your non official co-workers which may harm the company strategy.

Simple answer - distraction. If you want to visit your sites, do so at your own time, money and leisure. Unless your work is gravitated around social networking sites like marketing, you should limit yourself on what you do. Doing so will make your employer angry and makes him/her doubt your work ethic.
On blocking, he can block any website unless you are spotted lingering too much on the site.

They block such things at work to keep you doing your job instead of fool'n around on the internet. So many of us are addicted to social sites as well as even mylot that we ignore the obligations to our employer or home and it's become a problem with many people.
Plus if they are paying you and for the internet they want your time and the internet to be used properly.

Hi no-ming Welcome to Mylot, I hope you will enjoy your stay, here with us and make lots of friends, while you are here with us, you are suppose to be at work doing your work, not being on social web sites, you can get fired for doing things, that has nothing to do with your job.

That is to prevent its employees from browsing through sites especially during office hours. I mean they pay you to work, not do anything outside of work, especially when inside the company premises :)
It's a good thing you even have access to the Internet. The company i used to work with before does not even allow us to use the Internet. Lol! :))

Most companies blocked networking site in the office during office hour. Our office is not exempted on this. However, that is only with the main office. Since I am assigned on field, I can access any site that we like.
Maybe if they don't know about mylot, they will not block it.

I think its pretty reasonable considering you go to work not to do those social-networking site but rather do the work. Your employer would be willing to pay you for doing those sites other than work. Personally, when doing something, social-networking sites really distracts and make my time put to waste.

The problem is, there are too many people like a guy I used to work with who always had FB running at the office and alternated between that and the work he was supposed to be doing.
You can't be your best at work if you're doing something else at the same time, especially if it's totally unrelated to your your.
