I have friends around the globe with whom I chat using yahoo messenger and Skype; during chat many use the word ‘lol’, as per web dictionary ‘lol’ means ‘laugh out loud’; they use emoticons too.
I rarely use the word ‘lol’ because I never feel there is anything to laugh out loudly, rather at times I feel like smiling and even sad depending upon what we are talking about. This can be better conveyed through emoticons.
In responses and comments to my discussions I too see the word ‘lol’.
I just want to know more about use of this word ‘lol’.
Do you chat with friends, relatives who live away?
You use Skype, YM or any other?
Do you use ‘lol’ and emoticons?
Please respond comment and share your views.
Thanks in advance. Professor Dr. Bhuwan Saraf. PhD. April 6, 2013.
Cheers have a lucky day ahead.

No i don't use it because others may not know about it.
My pneumonia is getting okay. I will take the shot when i have fully recovered, and that's for sure, professor.
I am now very cautious of my health.

Hello Professor!
Very interesting discussion you have here. Pretty much everyone I know on the Internet uses "lol" and usually they just say it to people when they have nothing else to say haha. Even if something isn't really that funny they will still say "lol".
Now I must say, what is really annoying is when people are talking to you face to face and they actually say "lol". That annoys me. Just laugh...or don't laugh. Just don't say "lol". So annoying.
Happy MyLotting.

I use Yahoo messenger occasionally. I don't leave just "lol" as a comment, as to me that isn't really saying anything, and how does a person respond to that? I do occasionally leave a comment and follow it with "lol". And I don't usually literally mean that I'm laughing out loud, just that I find it humorous.

Same like you, I also rarely use lol in chat messages or discussion. I prefer to use emoticons, but I am also not crazy to use emoticons. Most emoticons that I use are smile or laugh or heart too. I don't really like to use lol, maybe because that word itself lack image of emotion like emoticons do.

I use LOL a lot actually though I tend to use it in awkward situations more than laughable ones or when I am telling something that`s not laughable to show a nonchalant attitude

i do chat and the first time the person i'm chatting with use "lol" in response to what i was previously talking about is a total turn off. Since I love, love, love to write and read and I feel that those two avenues are the best way to express my emotions it's not very attractive to be chatting with people who doesn't give much appreciation for words. I'd say rather not respond to me when that's the best thing you can come up with.. and by the way, this lol thing has evolve lately to lmao,lmfao.. where is the sense in that? the future is at risk!

Hello Sir,
I like using emoticons when I chat with my friends online or while posting responses here. The emoticons I use most often are smile, sad, and thumbs up. I have never used LOL. My friend would often send me lol while we would chat through sms.

Well all this time I thought lol did mean lot's of laughs. Is there any remote chance that the web dictionary might be incorrect? It may well be right but if I choose to think of lol in the manner I do is that alright? Could there be conflict with other people if I think of it slightly different?
In any case, our subject here lol does not I suppose, need to be too much of a concern providing that it does not completely take over our paragraphs. I want to read actual words too. As for the using of the lol or any other emotion -i- con, I find I use it very sparingly. There are times I find I do laugh or feel the urge to depending on the subject and put an emotion into the writing to clarify to the reader.

I don't chat, professor... In fact, some of these text slang are quite new or unknown to me. I do know 'lol', though; and I use here to convey that I am laughing together with the one I am interacting with... Also, I may add at the end of my sentence to convey that what I am saying should be taken lightheartedly...

Hi,
I don't use the word lol or emoticons. I have used emoticons in very few responses when I have completed my 200 posts. But now I ma not using it. I don't chat online with my friends or relatives who are living away. I keep contact with them through email or phone.

Hi Professor You have brought up a very good point here. I use the laugh out loud but I think it has become more of a habit than I really need to use it. I suppose it can seem silly when I use to write hand written letters I use to say tee hee or chuckle chuckle just meaning I was giggling I will be more aware of how much I use lol and will try to break this habit. Thanks Professor great discussion.

I use 'lol' quite frequently when talking to my friends or online. I think it has become more of a habit, rather than a way to say that I am laughing out loud.
I tend to use emoticons too, but I try to use them less now, since they start to lose their meaning.

Respected sir,
Actually LOL,ROFL,LMAO etc are common words used on the internet but LOL is most populat internet slang.I too use LOL many times but mostly when there is something really funny. However many people are obsessed with this word, i have seen them using this word after every sentence.Like i am going to market lol, i got a new shirt today lol.May be they feel that importance of their sentences will be lesser if lol is not added to it,or its like you present yourself as cool and lively .But all this is understandable ,sometimes you like a word and use it many times. What surprises me though is people use this world in real life too while they are talking to someone, i am still figuring out why people do that. Its best to leave internet language for virtual world, that is my opinion though.Best wishes.

Hey professor,
yes, i do use skpype and FB chat often. you are right, lol means laugh out loud, but seldom do we use that to literally mean laugh out loud anymore.
for me, i don't really like it when people use lol because i think it's now used omore to fill an awkward silence more than anything else.

Yes u are absolutely right, even i do not like to use the word lol as i do not find any thing significant about this word, no doubt this word is used extensively while chatting but it has been created on net and has been used by us only. But yes i do use emotions to express my feelings like happy or sad smileys that helps convey my feelings to the one i chat with.
