Not a bargain

Some time ago my husband and his mother were driving through their local area and they noticed a small shop where you could buy different kinds of fruit and vegetables and other things. They noticed a big pile of corn and the price was extremely low so they decided to buy a lot of corn. When they drove back they were very happy. They had bought a lot of corn and they didn't spend much money because the price was so low. It sounded like a real bargain and they decided that they were going to eat some of the corn for dinner that night. When they got home they boiled some of the corn and started eating it. It tasted strange, and it turned out that they had bought feeding corn for animals They regretted buying such a large amount of corn, because they were unable to eat it and they had no animals. Did you ever buy something that sounded like a bargain and turned out to be a waste of money? What happened?

Awww, that's awful. There should have been a sign letting people know it was feed corn. I feel so bad for them now. Do they know anyone who would want to buy it for their animals? Wow, that's just plain rotten. Yeh, I've done it myself and it always seems to be bananas. I buy them because I like them when they are not quite ripe. Unfortunately, I then forget about them sitting on the kitchen table and they start turning very, very ripe..almost black. I don't like them mushy but I do this all the time and could kick myself. I ended up eating one yesterday and one this morning with some peanut butter. I'll try to gag the last one down tomorrow with more peanut butter.

I love, love, love banana cake, especially with chocolate frosting, lol! It's one of my favorite foods...mmmm, yummy! BUT, since I quit smoking I gained like 12 pounds and I feel awful. I don't hardly fit in my clothes anymore and I'm very upset over this. So, needless to say, I try to stay away from all those goodies until I lose those pounds, otherwise, I'll keep gaining. It drives me nuts. I just wish I could go back to eating the way I did....when I smoked. I didn't gain anything and could eat anything...so irritating to me.

I understand what you mean. I used to be able to eat almost anything without gaining weight at all and I was actually too skinny, but those days are over. I am trying to lose weight at the moment, but it seems to be a slow process. I would like to lose between 5 and 10 kilos, so I also stay away from cakes at the moment. I really love sweet things so it is a big challenge to avoid those things and sometimes I break my diet. I had to buy new pants because the old ones were too small, but I still keep some of my old clothes and I hope that I will be able to wear them again in the future.

I also think that there should have been a sign. I could have made the same mistake, because they said that the corn looked like corn for humans. Unfortunately the didn't know anyone who wanted to buy the corn for their animals, and they had to throw it away since they couldn't eat it themselves. Next time they see some cheap corn they are going to ask the shopjkeeper if it is corn for humans or not so that don't make the same mistake again. My ex-boyfriend was a baker and he used the very ripe banana for banana cakes. He said that they were perfect for that, and he let them turn almost black before he used them. Do you ever bake banana cake? I haven't tried it myself, but I think it sounds like a good way to use the very ripe bananas.

Buy anything from a Roma (gypsy) in the street and you will regret it. (Modern European Proverbs, page one.)

Does that mean that the beautiful necklace I bought in Romania wasn't made from real gold No, just joking. I met many Romanis when I travelled around in Eastern Europe, and they often tried to sell me things, but I have never bought anything from them.

I know that. Romania was just an example, I have also met Romanis in other countries. Sometimes meet them in my country (Denmark) as well.

Not all Romanians are Roma! There's a big difference - the Roma live all over Europe. There are good items from Romania too, and still much cheaper than other countries for now, although the European Union will soon hit that on the head!

oh yes..more times than I can count. So did they take the corn back? It should have been clearly marked. I would haved been so not happy. I have bought fruit in the grocery store on clearance. It appears to be good and sometimes it is but all too often I get it home and it is not so good. I try to buy in season to keep cost down but I won't go dirt cheap on non-perishable items because they tend to be that cheap for a reason.

I also think that the corn should have been marked. There were no signs and my husband and my mother-in-law thought it looked just like corn for humans. They decided that they weren't going drive back to the shop, because it was not that close to their home and in case the shop refused to take the corn back they felt that it would be a waste of gas to drive back. Today they are able to laugh about the story, but when it happened they were very disappointed. I have done the same thing as you. Sometimes I buy cheap fruit, and when I get back to my home I discover that it wasn't as good as it looked. Some of the discount shops in my area sell cheap fruit, but the fruit is not worth the money and I don't usually buy fruit in those shops.

Yes and it was corn and it was full of worms so gross. You can eat feed corn if you get it early enough in the season but I am guessing it was way past eating it season when it was bought.

Corn full of worms that sounds horrible I didn't know that it was possible to eat feed corn early in the season. I guess the corn that they corn that they bought wasn't from the early season. They tasted it and they immediately knew that they wouldn't be able to eat it the rest of it.

You only have a few weeks before it turns, I only know because my father used to work for a Jewish man that while waiting for his sweet corn crop to come in would eat some of the cow corn when it was ready to eat for humans.

I am one of the losers of this category. I tend to buy a lot of eatables, vegetables, fruits when they seem cheap (a bargain). It so happens that we can not consume the whole lot, eventually haveto throw a part of it due to staleness/rotteness etc. So, instead of the bargain, I end up paying up more than I would have paid if I had not succumbed to the charms of the "BARGAIN'..

That sounds familar My husband and I sometimes do the same thing especially if we buy a large amount of fruit because it is on sale. We are always optimistic when it buy it and we think that we are going to eat it all, but we often have to throw the last fruits away because they are rotten. We have decided to be more careful in the future because it is waste of money to buy food that we don't use, but sometimes it is a challenge to resist the urge to buy things that are really cheap The last time it happened we bought a large amount of fruit because it was on sale and we placed the fruit in a bowl in the living room...but we didn't manage to eat all of the fruit.

They thought that they had been very lucky because the corn so cheap, but as soon as they tasted the corn they realized that the corn wasn't meant for humans. Like you say we all learn from our experiences, and I am sure that my husband and my mother-in-law will be more careful next time.

I feel sorry that your husband and his mother bought some corn which turned out to be animal feed. Today my children and I enjoyed eating some popcorn. When I was in Sumatra for breakfast I ordered two passion fruit. Well I got given two plates of passion fruit. It was a lot more than I had bargained for.

My husband and his mother were disappointed when they discovered that they had bought corn for animals. When they saw the corn in the shop they thought that it was a bargain and they immediately decided to buy a lot of corn because the corn was so cheap. They were disappointed when they discovered that the corn didn't taste good at all. Unfortunately there were no signs in the shop so they didn't realize what they had bought till they tried to eat the corn. Sometimes we receive much more food that we expected like you experienced in Sumatra. I have experienced that, too. Some time ago my friend and I bought icecream dish in a restaurant and we thought that we were going to receive an ordinary size of icecream, but the icecream dish was huge and we unable to eat all of it.

Oh yes, and it seems I never learned. That is why I make it a point not to get all excited over the sound of sale and bargain prices. There's just way too many incidences that I cannot count anymore. Good thing though I am learning my lesson now.

I have done the same thing when there is a sale. Some things you can buy a keep for a long time and it isn't a problem to buy a big amount of those things when there is a sale, but I have learned from experience that it isn't a good idea to buy a lot of fruit or similar things when there is sale, because we don't manage to eat them all. Last time it happened we bought a big amount of different fruits and we placed them all in the bowl in the living room so that we would be able to eat them before they got too ripe. We never managed to eat all of them and we had to throw the rest of them out, but at least learned our lesson

Yes. Once I just order an item online, a toothpaste. I thought its cheap and has a good discount on one day sale. But, the toothpaste is not good, my mom and dad didn't liked that at all. But its big sized toothpaste, 200+100 gram. So, we have to use it even we don't like it.

Sometimes we can save a lot of money if we buy in bulk, but if the things that we buy don't live up to our expectations we are suddenly stuck with a large amount of something that we don't like just like you and your family experienced when you bought that toothpaste. In your situation I would have done the same thing as you and used the toothpaste since you already paid for it. My husband and my mother-in-law were also stuck with the corn that they bought. When they bought it they didn't know that the corn was only meant for animals. They just thought that they had found some really cheap corn.
