I've Finally Got The Reading Bug Back

Before I bought a computer in 2001 I read a lot of books. However, since I bought a computer I haven't read at all, only online..and not books, just articles and things. That is now set to change since I bought and read 'A Street Cat Named Bob' by James Bowen from Waterstone's last week. All you have to do to educate yourself about Bob and his owner is to Google 'Bob Street Cat' and you will see some videos of them on YouTube. You will then realise why I love the book so much. Anyway, because I enjoyed reading again I've decided to buy a couple more paperbacks from The Book Depository. I last used the site to buy two George Orwell books for Mum, but I didn't take the plunge for myself on that occasion. Just now, though I've ordered a book about the Dalai Lama's cat and a Stephen King book called '11.22.63.' I am thoroughly looking forward to reading some more but I won't go mad and join a book club like I have done in the past. No room for loads of books in this house, for a start! Here's Bob and James in case you're interested. So sweet, I love them both. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MePaWG7g5FA

I also used to read quite a bit when I was still single, which I even got to really continue after I retired, and up until I fell pregnant then gave birth. After that, I never really read any book except for one about being a baby whisperer. I still have my paperbacks and hardbound books stacked up by my dresser-drawer, which are all untouched. I wish I can go back to reading too. Sigh!

What's stopping you? Don't you have the time? Believe me, once you start reading one book you'll want to read the rest!

Sorry, I had no idea you had so much of your time taken up by being a primary care giver..a job in itself isn't it my friend?

Yes, zero time. I may be a stay-at-home mom, but I take care of my 4 year old daughter who has Autism Spectrum Disorder. So, not only am I her primary caregiver, I am also her teacher and therapist here at home. I also train her life skills daily. Whatever free time I do have, I devote to sleep...or, on rare occasions, to going online to check any emails.

I recently kind of started to read myself. Not that I had totally quit, but I've just checked out a second library book in as many months. I've read some other books too, but I'm making more time for reading.

There's nothing quite like 'escaping' into a good read is there? I'm looking forward to my next two coming. I've not read a Stephen King book (for example) for ages.

I've only ever read Firestarter and that wasn't one of his more gross ones. I'm way more into fantasy and science fiction, but the book I've got out of the library right now is a Sherlock Holmes: The Crossover collection. I like Holmes too. The other book was Out of OZ, I'm also into the Wizard of Oz... I've currently got another mystery in my bag that I stopped to read the library book, but I'm ready to pick it up when I finish the Holmes book, in about 35 pages...

Thank you for enlightening me, sorry I hadn't read this discussion before, otherwise I would have known who you were referring to in one of my discussions! So it's now clear to me. You sound exactly like me, prior to the internet I was considered quite a bookworm, I used to love reading Horror stories, I would get all my books from the library, cheapskate, books are too expensive! And I only tend to read them once. Well I am trying to get back into reading, my reading interests have changed, I love reading biographies, recently I read Denise Welch, I so admire that woman, and she too had depression, had it for 20 years. I first came across her in Corrie, then Waterloo Road. I read Sean Connery's but it was sooo boring, I gave up in the end.

Yes, I can imagine Sean Connery's book being sooo boring, as he is in real life of course. I like Denise Welch too. I actually remember the scene in 'Auf Wiedersehen, Pet' when she first met her hubby-to-be Tim Healy. Why did those two split up? Anyway, I have read my fair share of horror books. I did it because I wanted to prove to myself I wouldn't faint..the thing is, whenever I came across a gory bit I'd just skip it. In school an English teacher would read horror stories and I'd have to stand outside because I felt faint. One of the Form Teachers spotted me, came over, asked me why I was standing there and I felt really embarrassed when I told her the truth. However, instead of her laughing (which is the reaction I was expecting) she stormed into the classroom and had a go at Mr Delaney for reading out such material to the class! Unfortunately, my classmates thought I was responsible for the readings to be subsequently banned after that, although Mr Delaney himself was very apologetic. Kids, eh?

What is that book about? (I can't view videos like that on my phone). I recently have gotten the "book bug" too. I don't know why, but I've been sinking my teeth into books like nobody's business these past couple of weeks. I finished the 600 page Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in 3 days - that's crazy if you ask me! It's so relaxing though and can kind of put you in another world.... What else is on your to-read list?

The book is about a homeless guy who comes across an injured cat in the hallway of accommodation he's living in (he pays the rent by busking) and, between them, they transform each other's lives. Set to be a sequel too and that's now on my list, called 'The World According to Bob.' Bob is the cat's name and he's the most gorgeous ginger tom!

That seems like an interesting book. I saw the video and liked it very much. I had lost the reading bug myself. But then I decided one day to start reading the Steve Jobs book that I had gotten for my birthday. And I am glad I did. The book was awesome. Then after I finished that I started reading the book that Ace Frehley wrote called "No Regrets." The book is real good. Now I am reading the book that Peter Criss wrote called "Makeup to Breakup" again, so far so good. Only that one I downloaded from iBooks on my iPad. I am going to write the book you mention down and look for it in the library.

Big Issue Man James & Bob - I love Bob(cat)&James so much
Which book do you mean, the cat book or the Stephen King one? Both are bestsellers so you can't go wrong. Glad you liked the video. In fact, there is an award ceremony for animals tomorrow night (recorded last week) and Bob is definitely up for an award. It would be awesome if he got one as he's brought his owner James back from the brink. There are some gorgeous photographs knocking about of them as well. This is my current favourite.

No, I was talking about the Steve Jobs book and the members of KISS. They all wrote books. So I read the Ace one and now I am reading the Peter Criss one. I have read almost every single Stephen King book. I love reading his books. I have that book you mentioned listed on a list. When I get around to it I will read it.

I had stopped reading books after I had got a job in a furniture showroom. I used to be very busy, I had no time to read any book. But now I have left that job and now again, I have started reading books. I like reading mystery stories and adventur books. I like to imagine the scenes in those books.

I was always a book nut since i was a kid all the way through middle school. but then once high school came around i just got too busy to read the books i loved and got out of practice. thats about the time my sister got into reading hard core and i was against doing anything my sister was doing so i just totally stay away from reading. around the time i stated on this site two years ago i started reading again. i started with the discussions on here and evolved into blogs and articles. last summer i got myself a kindle and began to download my books again. i was reading all the time again and did so with ease. it cost a little more than my usual $5 paper back book collection but everytime i finished one there was a new one in my lap within minutes. and that was just too addicting! i caught the bug again too and im glad its contagious and that you can get it more than once. ;) one of my favorites recently was the Joy Luck Club. I found a lot in common with the novel while still learning something new. i also enjoyied the 50 shades of gray novels. they were different and entertaining by many means. i have joined a book club before but ended up backing out. what a wonderful idea for the upcoming spring months ! :) best of luck with your reading addcition. i hope to hear of your newest titles soon.

So, I take it you read more on the Kindle now? I have toyed with the idea of getting one but rumour has it that the screen only lasts about a year and breaks, therefore another new one has to be bought as a replacement screen doesn't exist. Hope yours lasts beyond the year. It will be unusual if it does.

You are still in the habit of reading. However nowadays ,very few people I know like reading -real books, except reading online. What surprises me is that your Mum and brother also like to read.I used to enjoy reading and the bulk of books I have read were classical literature. Now I barely read apart from doing it for a while before sleeping.Online takes a large part of my time now.Sounds interesting, the Bob Street Cat is a story about how one man and his cat found hope on the streets.

I believe James is writing a sequel too. His fans (including me) cannot wait for it to come out, I think it's going to be in July, something like that. There is talk of his story being made into a film as well. I'd like to see them try to find a cat as intelligent as Bob. No cat likes to 'act' if they don't want to!

I had the same problem. Although I have hundreds of books that I need to read, my main source of reading has been online. I find that I'll go through and read all the entertainment news and anything thats trending on a daily basis. I'll even read our local paper online but will rarely pick up a book. For the last year I've been going thru spurts where I'll either start a book and not finish or purchase a book and not read it. About a week ago I started reading a J D Robb book and am really enjoying it which makes me wonder why I stopped reading in the first place. Guess I have to admit that the internet takes up most of my free time.

I missed having a book in my hands. It sounds crazy but it's true. That's why some people refuse to buy a Kindle as it's not the same as having a book in the hand. I'm glad you are enjoying the J D Robb book. I guess, the fact I loved 'A Street Cat Named Bob' helped me to get into books again. If the book had been a load of rubbish I don't think I'd have bothered ordering anymore!
