Till now we are watching tv without any type of set top box. We are getting more than 100 tv channels to see in different channels. The people those are providing cable connectivity are no saying to attach a set top box for better performance... Is it really must to add a box to tv?....

In Australia, we have switched over to digital YV. They turned off the previous signals and so your TV will not work unless you have a set top box or a new HD TV.

Here in the US, if you have an old analog TV you would need a box to watch TV using an antenna. The box would convert the digital signal to analog so the TV could work. With cable systems, the cable company sends a signal that can be used by either analog or digital TVs. Cable companies try to make you rent cable boxes however, by only offering some channels and HD TV signals through their boxes.

Its depends, if you want a better video quality and performance you can add that box in your television set, but you must consider if it is really necessary, As for me i don't use box for television, i'm contented with the video quality and performance already of my television set

we are using tata sky... There are different packages for different prices. If you pay 100 rs extra, you will get some hd channels also... The clarity is good. And even you can change language for certain channels...

In my house the box give you a different advantage of watching TV. Usually the provider give you feature they call "on demand" that allow you to re-play the show that you missed.

My mom's tv set is cable-ready. However, not all channels can be detected on her tv without having to use the box that you are referring to. So she makes use of the box to watch channels like pay per view channels and other premium channels.

Hi gamyam I'm not sure of the situation in India, but here in the UK there are several different types of set top box and a number of different reasons for having one. All of the boxes deliver a different type of TV service, either through your aerial, a cable set up or a dish and this could be a service from Sky or one of the many terrestial or cable networks, each or which will give you different channels depending on who they are and which package you are subscribing to. The only way to find out for certain about you particular situation is to contact the people who are telling you to fit a box and ask them why you should do it and what you gain from it. But don't forget to get an independant opinion as well, from a local TV retailler or something, as these companies are often prone to telling a few fibs to get a sale.

i think it depends on the country ,for example you can watch many channels without tv set top box,but here in japan there are only few channels on tv,in turkey we have many channels to,and we can watch without any tool but if you use the box ,i think there will be many channels so you can choose many different movies and series, if the person who doesnt watch tv so much, doesnt need that box i think hapy mylotting

yes absolutely. technology is improving everyday. now nobody is using crt television. everyone has lcd, led, plasma tv in their home which costs at least 30-50,000 rs. and most of the television today performs better only at high definition signals. if you are not willing to spend much for a HD telecast then at least you must have a standard definition telecast. any normal set top box will provide standard definition telecast. and moreover the price package is only around 150rs. so its not much of a difference from the current cable rates. with just addition 50 rs you get improved picture quality. and moreover government had anounced digitalisation policy. according to which it expects all the cities and towns in the country to be digitised b 2015. so i would recommend you to have a set top box to have better quality and also support government in digitalisation
