Do You Still Have Cable TV?

I can see why so many would ditch cable with access to video at a more affordable price now. Are you one of those people? I've been thinking about getting rid of cable myself. I personally think the cable companies did it to themselves by pricing subscriptions so high and not letting people choose the channels they want instead. They definitely don't have the customers best interest.

I do have it, but have been thinking about changing. I am just not sure what the best choice would be to cut our bills down and still get to watch what we want. I am not a tech person, and it is kind of confusing.

Hi,
I never had cable TV. We receive the shows broadcast on antenna fixed to the roof and that's it. There are times I planned to have a connection but learning about the internet, I made every effort to prioritize its connection instead of the cable television. I find it more informative to be connected to the net rather than watching TV shows. My LCD-HDTV can receive six signals, from blu-ray to HDMI and computer, it is only a matter of choosing what to watch, be it TV, DVD or online films that can be streamed right from the internet. I think, having an internet connection right at the room is more advantageous than cable television.

Yep, we still have cable. It's expensive to have the full package but we feel it's worth it. I'm retired so always have a television on while I am awake, asleep or doing something on the computer. My husband is rarely home so it does keep me company when here alone. I do watch alot of programs on the Investigation Discovery channel and wouldn't be able to get it without cable. The sporting events wouldn't be available on local tv without cable either. It's baseball season and I sure don't want to miss any Cardinal games!

Ever since, we don't have a cable TV. My parents didn't subscribed to it for we are not TV addicts. Now I see the importance of cable. Having cable TV installed in our house will make you explore more channels from different genre and from different countries.

We had a cable tv at home. But just two months we got shifted to tata sky dth, not because we were not satisfied with cable tv, its just because , we bought a new lcd tv, and cable tv didn't happen to look good with an expensive tv... :P

The problem with cable is that you can't see the channel you want. You just have to watch what the cable operator provides. Not only that, many times in our area, the cable operator stops the signal due to one reason or the other. And the picture and sound quality is not good too. So, I have been using a DTH network from around 5 years. I like it. Also, if you can add more channels for a certain time, which is not possible in cable.

I haven't had cable for decades. I was satisfied with the few channels I could pull off the air with rabbit ears. Then they went all digital, so now I just watch a few shows online.

You are correct. The cable/satellite companies did it to themselves because of greed. We just have an old-fashioned antenna. It works good, and after the initial investment for equipment, it is free every month.

Though I really do feel like it would be feasible for our family to get rid of our cable television service, this is not something that my husband agrees with and for that reason alone we still have cable television in our home. I see that most of the shows that I watch are programs that come on the big three channels and that means that I can go online and watch the programs from the stations websites. However, my husband is one of those people that watches a lot of the specialty channels and that is the reason that he refuses to get rid of our cable television subscription.

Yes,I still have mine connected. It's true that most cable providers jack-up their subscription costs. The reason, they have upgraded their signal to a more clearer digital picture. The problem with cable today is, you can not choose what you would like to view, aside from the fact that some of their movies shown are reruns. Maybe they run short of stocks especially the movies.
Anyway, we can watch our favorite show or movies in internet, the only problem is some takes longer time to load. I seldom watch movies anyway, I just watch the news on CNN or BBC.

Yes, with all the news we've been hearing I think it's far from over. The north really is determined to do what they have been saying before. I think they already have aim their target to the east coast.

I don't think that our lives would be the same without cable tv. I just love a lot of shows from the different cable channels. My family and I do watch movies from HBO and Star movies but most of the time we watch National Geographic Channel, Bio and TLC.

I don't know about cable-TV money (I asked here on myLot; but either I'm not paying close-enough attention or nobody else here knows either, so I'm doing some 'real research'---i.e. 'searching' http://search.mylot.com/search.aspx?t=web&k=cable+tv%2c+money),
but I THINK ... well, I GUESS that 'payment for the commercials' covers the show-production costs (including performers'- & crew-salaries), and cable-subscribers' money covers licensing-fees & cable-company/network-people's salaries.
Cutting out the commercials, you're cutting out--not the salaries the performers & crew are paid--but the VALUE of their contribution (aside from the happiness the performers-&-crew help you find).

Well, commercials are the whole point of BROADCASTING shows; but the people producing- & starring in-the shows do it ... to give US the 'reason why' we're watching---the fun, the distraction, whatev

Yes, my husband and I still have cable. However, we have cut back on the channels (we used to subscribe to many of the movie channels...now, we ditched all but one movie channel) and also downgraded the cable boxes. We still get the same service, just no DVR, and we are saving $50 on our bill for that.

I have it - now. I went without it for a couple of years, then before that, had it a couple of years. Before that, I didn't even own a TV. The only reason I got one was to watch football or baseball now and then. It's expensive, but I have it rolled into my internet connection so it isn't as bad as it could be.
I don't watch TV that much and hardly ever any regular shows. Just the news sometimes and, as I said, sports when I'm in the mood.
I do agree that cable companies have overpriced their services, but here, they don't allow competition with other cable companies, so they can do whatever they want. A lot of people have changed to satellite.

hi elmiko.
how have you been man? hope all is well with you.
ditched my cable tv a couple of years ago. it wasn't much of a stretch for me. i was out of the house almost everyday and when i'm home, i'd usually just sleep or read. i was really contented with what was offered at free tv. anyway, i'm moving into a new home... a permanent one actually since i bought it, so i will be hooking up with a cable provider. i figured, i've be spending most if not all of my remaining years at this humble abode of mine so i might as well get it hooked up with cable tv. the house has five bedrooms and four of these rooms will have tv so i think i can get a good deal on cable by just gettign myself a splitter so cable is available in the other three rooms. of course, i won't be telling that to the cable tv technician or the cable company for that matter. lol!
anyway, i would mostly watch the news and sports programs provided by the cable company. been hearing and reading good feedback about the cable company servicing our area so i think setting aside a part of our monthly budget for cable tv fees will be worth it.
cheers and happy mylotting!!!

Unfortunately I still have cable but only because without it I can't have english channels on my TV. It would all be in spanish. So I have to deal with the cable company which I really can't stand. I had the cable and the internet together with one company for 2 in a half years but just got rid of the internet. So now the bill is down to about 40 dollars but that is with the lease amount of channels. I agree if they want to charge so much we should have the right to have the channels we want. They have so many sports channels and music channels that are wasted because we don't watch those channels.

I had cable at my parents house and used it all the time. my parents and sister still use it all the time. its great for finding new shows or for just flipping through stuff on a lazy day.
but when i moved out i had to limit my expenses. and cable didnt make the cut. however i got unlimited internet access for pretty decent price. online i am able to watch anything i want. movies, tv. and ive gotten good at finding access over the years to anything i want.
i used to live with someone who only did this so i learnt from him. otherwise i could never figure it out myself.
i understand that some people say im screwing the tv and movie studios and they will cancel if noone pays for viewing...but i use the internet to test it out. i then go and buy the DVDs for the shows i like and the movies that i enjoyed.
its just not worth the money in my opinon when you can get the same quality of entertainment for cheaper or free even. satellite is the same thing; not exactly worth the cash.
