i see that in arab countries where democracy has just been established after arab spring the parties which are found to openly support a particular religion only have won. even in the west the pope has certain amount of influence in politics and even there conservative parties supporting a particular religion have won. take about asia where ever there is democracy there are many parties which have won mainly because of their religious affiliations. is it right right to vote for a religious party? is it right for political parties to mix religion with politics? do people have to vote for a party just because that party supports a religion?.first of all does religion have an role to play in politics?

I think every person in any country that dream of a progressive nation of liberated people in the future need to look beyond just religion doctrine to elect political party and politician into ruling governing elites. There are more to govern a nation's affair than just the religious value stated in every holy book of religion. Unless the general population want to go the direction of an establishment of a theocratic state instead of a truly free and democratic state in their nation building journey, then voting on any political candidate and political party base solely on religion affiliation is the way to go, in this way, the rights of every citizen would not be guaranteed in the future; secular rule and constitutional law will have to give way for religious doctrine in every day governance of their nation. Religion has limited role to play in politic whenever it is not in the interest of extremism and radicalism.

I think it is up to that person to make up the decision who he/she want to give the vote, it is strictly an individual right to make up her own mind as an adult voter and should accept the consequence of her own action later. It is immaterial whether i agree or not someone should hold on to her religious value in deciding who or what political party to vote in a fair and free election, i personally will take more than just my religious value n belief into consideration in placing my choice of the leader and political party that dominate the government.

So, do you agree that a person should consider the religious values they hold to when choosing a candidate to vote for?

yes you are right every one should vote after considering all the factors you mentioned. but what i am saying is please dont vote for a party thinking that they will do good to your community instead vote for a party who will do good not only for your community but also to every one in the country

In America our founding fathers recognized that there was a danger in having a state sponsored religion. They wrote into our Constitution: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Congress, which writes our laws could not establish a state religion. BUT it also could not prohibit folks from practicing their religion. Because they believed that only a moral and religious people could govern themselves. They recognized the urge for power and fame often influenced a leaders ability to govern well. And a people who have little character or morals would elect the ones who would give them what they wanted rather than considering what was best for all.

thank you. Let's not forget though, that morality and the part religion plays in morality is needed as well. But only at the individual level. It is in the interests of the secular government to not outlaw any religious practice and sentiment.

you have hit the bulls eye. really i also feel that american constitution is one of the most secular constitutions in the world. in fact american constitution introduced the concept of federalism to this world. i always admire constitutions which are secular. in fact most of the western countries have a secular constitution. i think this is also one of the important reason why most of the western economies are most developed in this world.

absolutely right. actually a religious person can serve his country in a better way than a non religious person because a religious person will have fear towards god so he wont harm his people at the same time a religious person will be very disciplined so he can provide very good administration and can exhibit good ethos.but as you said it only works at the individual level. but if we consider society as a whole religion should never be used as a tool to attain power in politics

Really i would appreciate for starting a wonderful discussion. This kind of tough discussion is needed for social awareness and upgrading of social political knowledge. Religion and politics are not at all interrelated but our recent government trends has adopted religion as a strategy for getting into people votes. We all people must erupt towards this social justice and have a good political governance without the interference of politics in religion or vice-versa.

yes absolutely i too have the same feeling. political parties are using religion as a weapon to garner votes which is a very bad thing to do. and we as responsible citizens should never vote for such parties. we should always vote for candidates whom we feel will develop the country rather than to a candidate who will just get votes in the name of religion and do nothing for country's development.

We people only keep chatting in social media about this event and social injustice. We need to volunteer ourselves in bringing social awareness through right education mainly to the illiterate sector in India.

yes you are right but unfortunately the education system depends upon the government which is in power. so if a religious party comes to power do you think that they will help change the education system to free the minds of the people. i dont think so. the ultimate problem lies in the nature of government. dont forget social media played a crucial role in arab spring. so i hope it will play a major role in this context as well

It should keep the government away from starting wars or abusing their own citizens, but it doesn`t always work.

it always doesnt work? i dont think so. people should be educated about the consequences, once people became aware then no one can fool them in the name of religion

Hi, In our country religion plays important role in politics. Political parties take the advantage of religion for winning the elections. Integrity of our country is in danger because of these political parties as they use religion as their weapon to fight in elections.

you are right but what i would say is that you should also be aware about the parties which claim themselves to be secular. actually it is these parties which we should be even more cautious about because they tend to polarise the minority votes claiming that they are secular and once they come to power they forget about the people. i need not tell you more about it as you might know which party i am talking about. even after ruling so many years since independence we have not progressed the way we should have. and look at the state of the country now.all these mess was created by the so called secular parties. hence i would say vote for a party which contests on developmental agenda than on pro or anti minority agenda.

One does not need Rocket Science to see that Religion and Politics do not, and never will mix. Just look around at the most successful Countries of the world. All those countries which have the highest standards of living, the happiest citizens, where the laws are just, and women get equal rights. Every one of those countries have separated the State from Religion. Now ask yourself,"What does this say about Religion?"

yes absolutely. now a days the influence of reiglion is very high in politics and thats the main reason why i have started this discussion. having accepted that religion plays a significant role in politics what do you feel about it. do you support it? or do you oppose it?. do you think religion in politics is good for a society?

it very clearly says that religion has no role to play in politics. but what we are witnessing now in recent times is that in several countries the party which a strong religious affiliation have won. thats what has feared me. thats what made me think that are we heading in the wrong direction. i accept that most of the west countries are secular but what about the rest of the world. afterall we have countries in the east, middle east, africa, etc where people tend to vote more based on religion than anything else. thats what i am more concerned about

It is not about "religion" in politics, but rather about God, who, in the first instance, ordained government and established it according to His Word. Religion is the construct of man and his ways of looking at God, morality, the universe, etc. through manmade doctrines, laws, systems of thought. God is God all by Himself and He is clear in His Word as to how government should work. When we follow His Word, we are protected by Him, peaceful, and prosperous. When we reject Him, we lose our safety, protection, and prosperity and find ourselves at the mercy of flawed, corrupt, greedy "man", thus subjugation to tyranny. The foundational documents of the USA are based on God's design and framed by the founders who came to this country to worship God freely. However, "secular humanism" has become an entrenched STATE RELIGION in many countries and is destroying us. http://vftonline.org/Patriarchy/definitions/humanism_religion.htm "The U.S. Supreme Court cited Secular Humanism as a religion in the 1961 case of Torcaso v. Watkins (367 U.S. 488). Roy Torcaso, the appellant, a practicing Humanist in Maryland, had refused to declare his belief in Almighty God, as then required by State law in order for him to be commissioned as a notary public. The Court held that the requirement for such an oath "invades appellant's freedom of belief and religion." The Court declared in Torcaso that the "no establishment" clause of the First Amendment reached far more than churches of theistic faiths, that it is not the business of government or its agents to probe beliefs, and that therefore its inquiry is concluded by the fact of the profession of belief. Actually, the Court in Torcaso rested its decision on "free exercise" grounds, not the "Establishment Clause." Abington v. Schempp, 374 U.S. 203, 264-65 (1962) J. Brennan, concurring. The Court stated: We repeat and again reaffirm that neither a State nor the Federal Government can constitutionally force a person to "profess a belief or disbelief in any religion." Neither can constitutionally pass laws or impose requirements which aid all religions as against non-believers,10 and neither can aid those religions based on a belief in the existence of God as against those religions founded on different beliefs.11 Footnote 11 concerning "religions founded on different beliefs" contains the Court's citation of Secular Humanism as a religion. It states Among religions in this country which do not teach what would generally be considered a belief in the existence of God are Buddhism, Taoism, Ethical Culture, Secular Humanism, and others. See Washington Ethical Society v. District of Columbia, 101 U.S. App. D.C. 371, 249 F.2d 127; Fellowship of Humanity v. County of Alameda, 153 Cal. App. 2d 673, 315 P.2d 394; II Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences 293; 4 Encyclopedia Britannica (1957 ed.) 325-327; 21 id., at 797; Archer, Faiths Men Live By (2d ed. revised by Purinton), 120-138, 254-313; 1961 World Almanac 695, 712; Year Book of American Churches for 1961, at 29, 47. We live in a moral universe created by God. When any "religion", theistic or atheistic (like secular humanism) violates God's morality, governments and politics fail. Of course God knew, as He did re the "fall" in the Garden, that we are not fit to govern ourselves due to our sin nature, so He told us that when Jesus returns, "the government will be upon His shoulders".

It is difficult I guess. Religion is always involve in politics. It is because religion is the one who control the society as a whole that also reflects from its culture. That is why for me, sometimes religion has a major role n politics.

exactly that is what is happening in developing and underdeveloped countries where due to lack of awareness the people are being lured in the name of religion just for the sake of getting votes. once people realises this then such parties can never even go for campaigning, forget about winning the elections

Hi, There was a time when religion and politics were close allies. But then, people mistakenly thought they could mix the two, temporal matters of politics and the spiritual concerns of religion. In theory, it is feasible and attractive. Rulers guided by the tenets of spiritual principles of love, truth and justice to look after the welfare of their constituents, so far so good. Enter deceit, lies, personal interest, and the whole gamut of human frailty to resist the temptation of the evil one and we have one big unhappy family, on the upper hand those who have all the means to satisfy their endless desires and on the other end, those who suffer endlessly to satisfy that need. Religion, thus, is a good guiding principle in way of governance with its eternal wisdom, that is, if the people wielding it follow those principles to the letter.

may be. but religious parties always are more interested in developing the religion and they sought to drive a wedge between persons of different religions for their vote bank politics. what i think is that religion is personal thing but politics decides the fate of a nation.

I think religion influences politics. Most congregations tend to bestow much confidence in their religious leaders and as such, influences their decisions.

yes you are right. and i totally agree with you. if a country has all of the citizens belonging to a particular religion then they can impose religious codes in administration. but there no country in this world where all the persons belong to a particular religion. so a country adopting a particular religion is not a good thing to do. because the persons following other religions will suffer in those countries
