What's That Smell?

Ever start to bake some thing in the oven, when suddenly you see smoke rolling out the oven door and you know that it hasn't been in there very long? When you realize it's the cheese melting that you forgot to clean off of the bottom of the oven from the last time you used the oven. I think to myself, I need to clean the oven, but it's like if it's out of sight , out of mind. Then the next time I use the stove I think, when the smoke is rolling out, I really need to clean the oven!

It happened to me a lot when we were a family of 4 and I used the big oven all the time. Now what I most use is a small electric oven that I can place over the counter. I can place a whole chicken the so it is more than enough. Those things never happen there because I don`t want the oven to be destroyed being as it is so useful. And I don`t forget so much as it is where I see it every day.

I get that, and if the oven is really dirty, then I will clean it. The reason is that I have to reach in to remove the soot and my arm or my sleeve will get dirty. It is also hard to remove gunk from underneath that element that is over the bottom of the oven. So maybe it is the difficulty of cleaning the oven.

I know the feeling and I've done it myself. I normally clean the oven but there are times I forget about it, just like you. And then the darn smoke alarm goes off and all he!! breaks loose. I've finally took down my smoke detector so I can reach it if necessary, lol!
I think we both need to get those little magnets that people put on their dishwashers that say "dirty" or "clean"....we'll need them for the stove, haha!

No, but I had learned real quick to check the oven before preheating it because my step mom leaves greasy pans and boxes of pizza in there.
Dad tried to use the oven self cleaner and nearly set the house on fire.

Yes, I have been there and done that, and it is awful. I used to have a self cleaning oven but the stove finally bit the dust and my current stove came from freecycle and does not self clean. It helps some to go ahead and run the vent.

I've been to that situation too, a lot of times. When I shop for grocery, I always create a mental list of things to buy and remind myself of add ons that's not usually on the list. When I get home and unpacked the goods, I get that "Homer Simpson's d'oh reaction". Overthinking or delaying an action (like you need to clean the oven the next day) makes us forget what we really need to do. Perhaps we should try post its or a calendar to remind us of the things we need to do. Good luck!

Hello STOUTjodee. Well I think you should set a schedule for cleaning your oven so that you will not forget it. I also do that every day. I always have a schedule for cleaning my whole house. It feels good when you're comfortable in your own place.
