i live in a small section of the city and most of the residents are friendly. when i take the bus to work and i always encounter this old lady at the bus stop. as the days passed and we became familiar with each other, we started talking about work and life in general. she said that she is fortunate that she never had to work in her life. she never got married and her parents apparently left her with plenty. she is very satisfied with her life.
WHAT? i thought to myself. how can you feel satisfied if you are not productive?
work for me is a necessity. it doesn't only bring me money, it gives me satisfaction too. working gives me a feeling that i am not USELESS. i am satisfied that i am able to contribute something to my family and the society.
it is true that some are born with a golden spoon and they do not need the money that work brings. however, how can they live knowing that when they're gone there will be nothing left to remember them by because they didn't do anything productive while they were alive?
would you stay home, waste your days, and drift thru life if you have plenty of money? what would you do if you were in her shoes?

Hi there Dagami,
Honestly, I share your sentiments. I love working. I love being productive. But if I had the opportunity to never work a day in my life like your bus friend did, I believe I would be happy to write blogs and books for the rest of my days.
I believe that sometimes, it really does take a lot of inspiration to be able to write. But more than the "inspiration," what a writer by heart really needs is TIME. Time to savor life, bump into inspiration, and the time to actually write.
I believe that the most beautiful writing comes out of a leisurely savoring of each day. I would wish that I had her luxury. The stories I would write, the workshops I would attend, the places I would travel to, and the people I would observe!
THAT would be my kind of life!
So while I don't agree with her at being contented with not needing to work at all, I believe there's also some use to that kind of lifestyle -- being productive in a non-employment sense.
I would love to use my time to volunteer and help other people as well.
I would really wish that in my sunset years I would have the luxury to be able to pursue the things I totally would love to do -- like write write write and write for myself and not as a job, and then to be able to observe and absorb people and their cultures.

I do not think i would believe every thing she tells hook , line and sinker although there is a semblance of some truth into it, now where is she going? If you are born with a silver spoon then you should at least have a chauffeur or a decent car and not ride public transport or if you have that much money then some people should be looking over you. Perhaps she is just trying to justify her unproductivity and no body wanting to marry her, it's only my personal opinion and i could be wrong, well millionaires also come in disguises but they would not tell anybody, much less somebody they met in a bus stop.

@kareemadivina, I agree "using public transportation is not a status symbol at all,it's just practicality."b but the type of vehicle you drive is surely status symbol, much less afford someone to drive it for you while you and your family relax. Riding or owning a car is not arrogance for me, sorry, but it just depends on individual preferences and the state or condition where you are right now and financial considerations, some people even prefer to own a helicopter but then again it all depends on who you are, what you are and what type of things you do, and bottom line is still how much you make to compensate for expenses.

Well, I think that using public transportation is not a status symbol at all,it's just practicality. You may own a car or you can be a millionaire,it's still better to use public transportation to minimize traffic,to save on gas and less pollution.Riding a car at all times is just arrogance.

you could be right in this. however, she didn't say that she is a millionaire. her parents left her with enough, that is what she said. i have met lots of italian millionaires and they don't go around driven by chauffeurs. most of them drive themselves. maybe she is like me with regards to using her car. even if i'm not a millionaire, i have a car but i don't use it everyday because i prefer to take public transport to work. i don't want to face the hassle of looking for parking space or driving during rush hours. you see, not all people who have cars use their cars all the time.
i have also observed that old people here want to remain independent and do not want somebody fussing over them if they can still take care of themselves. this is one reason why most of them prefer to live away from their children. this lady looked healthy enough and i'm sure she is still self sufficient. she doesn't need a caregiver yet.
i fell hook, line and sinker becasue i didn't see the need to doubt her. she can't get anything by lying to me. we were just having conversation. i've seen her at the bus stop many times during the last year but we haven't introduced ourselves. sometimes strangers get bored while waiting for the bus and they get to talking. as i've said, i live in a small community.

Oh gosh...if I had that kind of money that I did not have to work, I sure would not be just sitting around the house. I wouldn't even be laying on a sunny beach all the time...some of the time though. I would have so so much fun just helping out people that need help.

oh yes, my family would be taken care of first but I see people that are really trying and struggling all the time. I would without question help those people and have fun doing it. I do know that you are right...not many people would be like that, unfortunatly.

plenty of people have the capacity to help but unfortunately very few of them extend a hand. this is the reality of our modern day society. if by chance i'd have more money, i'd try to help people too. however, i'll start helping some of my relatives first.

Hi,
If I were in her shoes I feel myself fortunate. But enjoying life without doing anything is not fair. We should be productive so that we can get mental satisfaction and peace and we also can leave something to our children. Remaining idle is very shameful. Everyone should contribute something to life by own efforts.

There is a difference between not working and not being productive. Do you know if she volunteered her time anywhere or did other things? If I was left with so much money to live on for the rest of my life I would be volunteering my time to the community and doing something worthwhile like that

I imagine it often. I'd love to have millions so I could donate a fair bit to my favourite charities that need it and help and volunteer. That would be very fun and no stress worrying about the money

Well if I'm in that situation, I would stay at home for some relaxation or vacation, but I would definitely live like that my whole life even if I'm the wealthiest person alive. She's the first I've heard of it. REALLY surprised me. =) The wealthiest persons I know work, they never sleep I guess just to produce money even they are already over the top. If I got the chance to be on her position, I would give scholarships and education to those deserving that I know the world would benefit. =)
If I am that old woman, I will help other people/country. =)
I Thank you. =P

well, money isn't about everything. People get a lot of money, become rich but that would end, eventually, there's what they say, "the only constant thing in this world is change", maybe you're rich today, tomorrow you're not. so why settle like your whole life? right. =)

I understand the idea of work meaning productivity, but perhaps she's productive in other ways? I work part time now but I seem to fill my hours with many things and I'm always busy and productive. Working part time doesn't mean I'm a part time producer of whatever. The things that I do are pleasant to me and they provide for myself and others at times. Maybe she is like that?
I guess I'm saying that just because a person doesn't "have a job" doesn't mean they are "drifting thru life" with no purpose.

I have had many different jobs in my life and I can't really imagine a life like that woman had. I think that I have learned something from all of my jobs and grown as a person and I don't think that I would have been able do that if I never had a job.
On the other hand it could also be great to spend my entire day on my art. I think that I would choose to do that if I had lots of money. I don't sell much, and the way things are at the moment it would not be realistic to give my job and work on art on all day because I simply wouldn't be able to pay the bills that way. But if I had plenty of money I would have the chance to spend a lot of time on art because I wouldn't have to worry about the mortgage payments and the bills.

If I'm fortunate as that woman, maybe I would not work for someone else but I will create jobs for the less fortunate.Perhaps I will build my own company or business.I will build buildings and invest in real state to keep my money rolling. It seems that there's not enough wealth in the world. It can just be drained any time. That's why we should invest because the prices of commodities and inflation rate is increasing everyday. If a million dollars is that much now,it may not be that valuable after 10 years.

there is wealth in this world but it is not evenly distributed. most of those who are wealthy are greedy for more. your idea of investing in real state is good since this will create jobs. notwithstanding the crisis today, real estate is one sector that still earns.

The life will become static and full of inertia if one stop to become productive. It is important to become productive. So you are right my friend.

thats fortunate for the lady. but still i guess i would prefer to do some work rather than just sitting. basically the reason for this is to make my social identity rather. i would prefer people to know me by my name rather than family's name . and i can achieve that only when i connect to society.

Yes, friend. Sometimes we confuse with somebody else opinion. But, I think we will get some respect from our family, our society and even from ourselves when we useful for them. I also feel satisfied when I work and get money, because I can do more for others, they also consider that me is useful in this life. Have a nice day...

I agree with you that I will continue to work if I have plenty of money. However, I will probably change jobs and do something else, maybe even volunteer for free at a charity. She did not tell you what she did with her time so maybe it might be something meaningful as well.

If I am that fortunate to inherit such a wealth, I would still want to work. At least I may find a non-stressful job. Keeping my brain functioning well . . However, not many people are that fortunate in this life

There are many ways of working and not all of them are for money. After I retired, I kept my house, did my garden, learned a lot of cooking so that I could live as well as when my husband was alive, but with half of the money. Maybe this lady does not work for money, but helps people. Who knows?

I have always worked, from the time I got out of high school, because I wanted to have my own money, I didn't want to depend on my parents, for anything any more then did enough, for me when I was coming up, this lady must have been rich and the is why, she never worked for anything, in her life, I am working here online right now, and this to me is work because, I have to work online to earn, the money that I want for myself, no one is going to give me, or leave me anything, so it take work to get, what you want in life.
