Any tips to maintain the house cool in this summer?

Have you ever seen that recycled house someone made in south america that contains the heat outside? They took soy milk's package, cleaned and cutted open and putted in the wall, the inside part (aluminium) should face the outside of the house and the sun light will hit it and go back, not allowing so much heat to enter the house. I'm really wondering about making a curtain with that because when it's summer here I feel like I'm frying, really. The house is still hot at night, air conditioner is not good for the enviroment so I leave it at 30 degrees even in summer and turn it off all the time as I can, but not all day or the animals here vomit or their pressure drops, as mine! lol. Any great tips for the summer? I'll take them all! Happy MyLotting guys.

You need plants as well as trees to make the air cooler. I saw a turbine like contraption use for factories that can be use to sucked the hot air from the house and contain the cooler air from within. I just don't know how much it would cost but you can ask around. Using insulators near the ceiling can also help in making the air inside the house cooler. You need to drink lots of water to avoid high blood pressure or suffering from heat stroke. Here in the Philippines, it is soo hot. I suffer from migraine most days due to the heat. What keeps me cool is using cold pack( I place this in the freezer) and use it mostly on my nape. It helps a lot to keep my temperature down.

if someone asks me "which season do you like best?" ,i will answer quickly "it's autumn",because the weather in autumn is cool .if someone asks me"which season do you hate best?",i will also answer quickly"it's summer",because it's so hot that i can't stand out for just two minutes as my clothes would be wet at all.and like you,i don't want to use the air conditioner.finally, i come up with a funny way.when i in the house and don't need to move,i will take a bucket which is full with cool water, and put my feet in,how cool! you can try it this summer.

Hey fellow summer hater, nice to meet you. I only meet those who love summer and inside everytime I hear it I'm like 'Then YOU have the d summer', lol. I can't stand it, I'm all wet right a way indeed. That's a refreshing idea and only to think about it I'm sure it will work. Now that you said it I remember starting from last summer I wet my face, whole arms and neck with water many times a day and just stay like that, I'll do the feet for sure when I'm in the computer. Thanks a lot!

You can tape aluminum foil to your windows. This will help keep the hot sun out. Just tear the aluminum foil into pieces big enough to cover the windows, then tape it to the inside of the windows. It will make the room dark, but will keep the rooms cooler.

I have done this is the past and it works really well. I don't have any windows taped up like this now because I keep my windows open most of the time, but I will use it during the summer when it starts getting really hot.

Wow! Thanks genious. Did you use that too? I'm doing it tomorrow first thing, even before cooking, can't wait to see the results! I guess is faster than if I started to collect the soy milk boxes, even if I start now I'll have a curtain only in the end of the year! LOL.

Hi there! Thanks for coming back, I see. Be sure I'll follow your advice, this really interest me, I think it makes a lot of sense. In youtube if you type summer heat cool summer house home, or what else keywords you can think of (I think those were what I could think of ) you'll find excellent ideas, besides your amazing idea I'll make another one which is to take the heat from our bedroom with a fan turned to the outside and down stairs to open a window in a different direction so the heat from upstairs will come down (which happens naturally: cold temperature rises and the heat comes down to the ground) so in a while that room will be fresh, can't wait to do this on the summer. Again, thanks and have a nice weekend!

Hi, If possible there's no better way to beat the heat but planting trees around the house or building a house near some trees, any way which is convenient. When the area is too congested to warrant a tree, then it is a poor neighborhood environment, houses so close together that air can't even circulate among them. If that is the case, it is next to impossible making for a cool room short of totally sealing it from the outside and installing an air conditioning system to run at full blast in the height of the summer heat.

Wow thanks a lot. Fortunately there are many trees around, I guess we just live in one of the hottest provinces ever. I like the idea of sealing shut, thanks a lot for coming.

Oh thanks, I saw that on tv and found it fun specially because it gives something to do with the soy milk it would just go to the trash can. Plus I'm into DIY right now, it's really fun and is saving so much money.

Block out the sun rays that are heating up your room with white window shades, light blocking curtains, reflective film or something. You know you need a fan to force the circulation of cool air so if you don't have ceiling fans, buy them.Ceiling fans are an effective way to cool down your home in hot weather and put a window fan in one of your windows to exhaust warm air.

I don't know about your country, but here in India, we found a paint called sun cool... If you paint it on the roof, the room will be cool... Our relatives have already applied it. We are also going to apply it soon... Find out, if such paint is available in your country... god bless...

I also think that sun cool paints will lower the temperature. I think it is good to paint roof with paints that helps to decrease the temperature.

@sanahaseeb Wow, thanks I got find that. I heard about it and hubby said is too expensive to paint the whole house from the outside, but now that you mentioned again he never actually looked for the price, let's see... I also heard that white is a great color to cool down, that there is a city that painted their houses and the whole city is cooler than others... I wonder if it's true.

Hello there! Wow that is too hot! We reach 37 in the summer as well, that's why I am worried about. Because of the use of air conditioner and also my girl dogs are getting old (they came here and rescued old already but are even older, poor babies ), all these advices are great and I feel ready for the summer,

I think it is good to have lots of trees around the house and also try terrace gardening and this will help to keep the house cold. I think it is good to have another roofing above the house and sunlight would not fall directly into the terrace.

Oh gardening is so great as a hobby and in growing our own food and being self sufficient and more healthy. We don't have a terrace but thanks for the advice, hubby is the one that loves to plant things so I'll ask him about an alternative to planting on a terrace.

Double glazed windows can be helpful. You can also opt for nets that are placed in the apertures to let some cool air inside. And obviously, a fan in every room is a must. High velocity fans are quite effective.

Never thought about fans in every room, we only have two, nice idea! That's really interesting, we should buy more. Only one has high velocity. Thank you dear.

wow katie that was a nice idea, here in my place the humid is very hot and even I didn't move much I sweat a lot because of the heat. I just bought a dark green satin curtain and I don't know if it cools my house but I think it is effective because the light can get through. I also water the ground outside just to cool down a little while a friend of mine always splash water of their floor, I ask her if it ok to water their flooring and she said it cools their whole house for a while, crazy right

You splash water inside too? I imagine it will evaporate quickly, makes a lot of sense! While refreshing could be cleaning up the house altogether, lol. I've heard about dark curtains, hope it works for you. I'll try the nice aluminium foil idea and if there's need for more I'll buy a dark (maybe even black? Gothic, lol) curtain too. Here is so very humid too! That's why is so hot. I need to come up with ideas soon cause now I have not just one rescued but two old lady dogs (poor girls came from breeders) and they get sick with the heat and every year I'm so worried, they even vomit. So I've been using air conditioner but only in 30 degrees celcius, which is still very hot because it's not good for the enviromment so I have to find another way. Someone mentioned also to put our feet on water while sitting in front of the computer, I wonder if I put the girls on water if they'll like, LOL!

Do you know the rock wool, which is the product for reducing the temperatures in the summer and block the cold weather outside of the room in the winter, but the thing is you should redecorate your house.Actually,I cannot live without air-conditoner,either,evern though I know it is harmful to environment. I donot believe there are some tips to lower the temperature in the room except air conditioner. My mom always told me to calm down, and then I will feel cooler, but I do not believe it. I really hate the summer, also winter, too hot and too cold.

Yes I have to use the air conditioner too, it's a shame but when I turned off (because of the enviromment, it seems it's bad for the planet) my dogs vomited, not once and I know it's not a coincidence, they are very old. Sorry about the wool I cannot use, being vegan and loving sheeps, but thank you.

lol,The rockwool is not wool from sheeps, which is made of rock. It is actually a mineral wool.

Oh cool! Well these nice MyLotters gave some free ideas, I really trust it will work but if it doesn't I'll have to buy stuff like your window shade idea and the paint to cool down the house, which I heard it is expensive but now that I think of I'm not sure.

I think having trees is around you house is a great idea, I suggest that you could built underground. I was inside the mall and even they have aircon but not enough to cool entirely inside the mall. So I think it is better to have shower 2 times a day or it depends to your body.

Ah showering, yes last summer there were many days I showered 3 times, that's a lot! lol, it feels great. I have cold showers, that's how unberably hot it is here when it's summer. Nice tip on the underground thing, that must be very expensive, if I was rich I'd love indeed to have more space going down, maybe more rooms, grow plantations underground, it would be lovely.
