Earn money on Ebay?

Many sites and people claim that they earn their living on Ebay. The only option to earn on ebay is by selling and buying goods from which my question begins. In first place, where do these people get goods at cheaper prices so that they can sell them on ebay for cheaper than the list prices of the item?

I always wondered that as well, so I asked one when I bought some DVDs from him.
Apparently, some of them are drop-shippers (depending on the product). Some are individuals who trawl lots of other cheap sites looking for good deals - the guy I asked used PriceMinister, for example.
Some keep their eyes on local businesses and buy stock when companies close or have a really cheap sale. Some pick up "job lots" of books, DVDs or other stuff at car boot sales, garage sales, yard sales or other fairs/fetes/events and balance the chances of finding something good in the box against the overall price.
Basically, they're mostly wheeler-dealers who keep their eyes open for stuff they can buy low and sell high. The better they know their market, the more chance they have of finding things.
A good example is a batch of books I bought: I got over 100 titles for a penny (plus about £40 shipping!). Less than 40p per book. I could sell them for 50p per book, plus postage, and make £10. I actually bought them to read, so I'm not doing that, but it's a good example!
There's also an additional group who are eBay scouts. They spend their time looking for low-priced items on eBay and buying them. Some do this legitimately - they spot a great deal, grab it and resell.
Others are scumbags and try to get the original seller to let the item go early/cheap, usually by inventing a birthday for their mum, a terminal illness or something else that convinces the seller to make a deal to help out. Two days later, the item's back on eBay at twice the price. That's why eBay guidelines say "Don't make deals" - I've had several people try this with me and thankfully don't fall for it.

Wow! There is a lot of information here. Thanks for the info. I am actually tring to sell electronic items here for which I guess custom charges apply. If we could just bypass such custom charges we can make money out of these sales.

yes you can go online and depending on what you want to sell you can buy in bulk wholesale means a lower cost to you but yes it could be costly and keep in mind shipping to where you live once you have recieved what you want to sell you take photos of it and place it on ebay mack sure what you place there also includes a shipping cost for your buyer to pay as well or you will eat the cost to ship to them god luck

My brother makes good money with them. Sometimes he places a bid on the items and resells them or buys them off friends and sells them on Ebay. He also looks for things that are in high demand and sees how much are they going for.

Hey, there are several places to buy cheap things. The thing is that we do not know the places to buy. Sellers on ebay take this opportunity to earn. In my town, there is a place where we can get all electronic items very cheap. It is because it the head place where things come before distribution. Thus there will transport charges reduction. Also the things will be coming in huge quantities and thus still lower price for a product. Even knowing this I come to ebay because it is much easier to search for the desired product and I will have larger options to choose from as sellers are from various places.

Lets say if the buyer just wants to try this method out and just buys a single piece instead in huge quantities and wants to sell it in profits. What would you suggest the buyer?

You need to look for suppliers where you can buy them in a much lower price. Buying goods in bulk will surely give you a big discount on items.

I havent actually done this Ebay thing. Yet.
But i would guess if you for example live somewhere where everything is cheap. Buy something that could sell for more. Put it on Ebay for a price which would make you a profit. If it sells, you got it going on. If it doesnt sell, try something else.
I guess that could work. But as i said, i havent ever done anything on Ebay so better wait for advice from someone with experience there. :)

Ok, so I ive at a place where almost everything sells cheap and then obviously someone buys it who is not from my place. So what we are getting here is the product cost + shipping cost which should almost equal to the list price and if the country also charges for customs clearance then it would be much costlier. There should be some other way to do this.

What you're discussing is the ability to make a profit. Now follow me here, these items usually come from 1 of 3 places. They either a) "fall off the back of a truck" b) somebody stole it c) they go into the auctions on ebay and if they win they get the items for cheap and then sell it for more than what they paid for it.
