Do something ? or grin and bear it?

Sometimes I get mad at myself for going the grin and bear it route, but a discussion triggered this discussion. If a person is too hot or too cold in their apartment should not they just call their landlord or maintenance person and politely ask them to solve the too hot or too cold problem? Your take? Yet some people do say they will just let it go and hope it gets solved? is it not better to be polite but ask for the preamble to be solved by the landlord or maintenance person?I may let little things go but something that may affect my health while Ii was living in an apartment I did call our landlord and he always got his maintenance man to remedy the problem.

You are paying enough rent, so why shouldn't you get onto the landlord, after all it's his duty to maintain the upkeep of his property, and it's in his interest to keep everything running smooth! We were fortunate in our last rented property, the landlord had a brother in law who was an all rounder in that he knew his way around plumbing, electricity and any other DIY jobs that needed doing, and the landlord give him is due was very quick at getting things sorted.

okay Wolfie the second time copy all the words.the user told us she had no way to get the heat turned down in her apt and I told her to call the manager. He is supposed to keep all the apts in repair. I know from experience that if the manager refuses to repair it you can go to the housing authority and they will send a repair man at once. They will repair what needs to be repaired and then bill the manager.

My landlord is a creep, it was 90+ degrees in this house last summer and the landlord did not want to fix the AC system! We have 3 children and dogs here who were dying of heat!! We called him over and over again but he told us to sweat it out!
So we finally took care of the problem ourselves by buying some window units until he decided to come fix it finally... It took him over a month to send someone out here to fix it-that is a long time to sweat every single day!
There are some things I am not picky about but like you said when it comes to our health, I do not play with that!

hi lvingmybabies I am so the same way.We had a pretty decent manager in our last complex as he told me if anythiong goes wrong to call him and he had a maintenance man who would come and fix it or repair it. I really grew to like that little Mexican man , He had an infectious grin and he seemed to be able to fix anything. He always spoke to me when he saw me unlike a lot of residents who were sort of snooty.i hate it when one gets a landlord who is like a cretin. We had one who refused to repair the leak in the upstairs apt above us sending down a stream of water on our bathroom walls. we had to go to bureau of public houseing and they sent a plumber who repaired it and charged it to the land lord. oh we got evicted but I still said it
was almost worth it.And we did get into a nicer apartment that was cheaper in rent too. that was a really evil landlord.

Hi Hatley!
Well it just depends I guess. My heat is paid for by the landlord and it's steam heat with radiators. I'm the one who adjusts it and there is nothing wrong with them that need to be fixed. But, sometimes it's too hot in here and sometimes it's too cold but that's the way I'm adjusting it and what the weather is like outside.
Sometimes it will be cold at night outside, so I turn up the steam to keep it warm. Then, the next day it turns out to be a very warm day, so the apartment is too warm then, haha. It takes a while for these radiators to heat up if they are turned down for a couple of days but then when they DO heat up, the weather usually changes and it's warm again. There is no end to it.
So, it depends on what they're complaining about. I don't complain about it because it's up to me to fix it because it's not really broke. Some people just like to complain about everything.

hi kashmeresmycat.thats fine if the radiators are working properly but this person said hers went up too hot and she could not get it down. That heat is too unhealthy so I suggested she call either her landlord or maintenance person and have them repair it.She did not want to bother but I do not think in a case like that that they wouldobject to helping her.I just felt one should ask for help when needed.

Ok, I wasn't sure what their problem was but I know if my heat wasn't working properly, you can be sure I'd be on that phone in a heartbeat. If she doesn't want to bother, then that's just plain dumb. No way would I let that one go if I'm paying rent as that comes with the service and your rent.

hi I am the same way when we were in apts as thats supposed to be
included in the deal that the lights are working and the heat is working and the air conditioning is working. I am polite but I do call the manager if I have a problem I cannot fix and I have never had them get upset with me either.

I know which discussion that was too. yes I would certainly call and report the problem. I have breathing problems so if I get too hot I will have an asthma attack. I have rescue meds and routine meds too but if the inside climate is too hot I will get sick. I would certainly report the problem. It's the squeaky wheel that gets the grease, so you have to speak up.

thats what I felt too. lol.when I get too hot I have allergy attacks and come close to asthma but take benadryl and it stops it but inside I hate it to be too hot.I was sitting here feeling hot so
I opened the window. Our room faces west so we get all the hot afternoon sun.
I just felt if my apartment was way too hot I would call the manager or landlord or maintenance person and get them to fix it so it would go down. I have learned here to stick up for my self as I am not living with my son who babied me now.I have to do it for myself lol.

hi jaribhai and maria I have had a great day today as i went shopping with my best friend Nelda.yes we women should learn to ask for help when we need it as if ones paying rent on an apt. it should be working in all ways, lights, heat, cooking so if I had a problem I would really call the manager and he was very good about sending his maintenance man to fix things..

hi Tlilly I also miss not living in an apartment . When our furnace made our rooms way too hot we called the manager and he was only too happy to send over the maintenance man who did repairs on the furnace and our apartment cooled down to a more comfortable temperature. I felt she should have called the manager for help to get that temperature down to comfortable again.

a sentence was left out as I intended to remark that I am now stuck in living in a retirement cent with a roommate, I miss our apartment.
but my son was l aid off and we finally missed a rent payment and were evicted so this is where I landed.rents are even higher now as we can no longer share a 2 bedroom apartment so my son had help with section 8 to get a one bedroom apt for 400 dollars a month
Otherwise it would cost him a thousand a month for one lousy bedroom a month.

Actually, this is something that you often see happening more and more, and it makes you wonder. But at the same time, I feel there are a lot of landlords that do not make this their first priority so maybe many have made this complaint to be told that their is nothing anyone can do. I know personally this is an issue for a lot of places, and makes me glad I noe own. Yes, it might be cheaper where utilities are included, but then you have to worry about are you gong to be comfortable with all the rules and issues there.

hi but in most places if the landlord or manager refuses to fix
something there is a housing authority of some sort that you can go to and boy do they come and repair things immediately then charge the manager so if the tenant has not got anywhere with the manager she can go to the housing authority and they will send a repair man to fsix it at once anf it will be charged to the manager too.

I saw the discussion and yes...I would call maintanence. those newer digital ones are funky and sometimes it is hard to tell whether or not there is a real problem. Ours are locked so that they will not go higher than 72 degrees which is plenty warm although it often "feels" much colder. I have turned it down and it takes forever for the temp to actually go down. In the meantime the temp will register at the max. heat until it starts to drop. The digital thermostats actually suck and often do fail. In my old apartment, my landlord gave up on the digital and finally replaced my thermostat with a dial one which solved the problem.

he was not one for refusing to see things were repaired.

thats what i keep telling my daughter to do about the air conditioning. if she doesnt keep complaining not only are they never going to fix it but if she complains and they dont its a deal breaker. as hot as it gets here they wont be able to live there if its not fixed and if they move out she shouldnt be charged for the contract.

hi bunnybon as someone here said if you don't compplain about t the air conditioning or anything else they will not know it needs repair and one should keep complaining until they do repair it or go to the health dept that has to do with unfair practices of land lords in apartment co mplexes.

Hiya Hatley,
Needs fixing and you have someone who is able to fix it? I would be on the phone really fast to them if that were my case.
Why suffer in silence when you have the means to fix things up?
To get anything I want I have to speak up a lot sometimes and really put my foot down as well.
I donĀ“t like doing it but sometimes I have to be unpopular in this house to get anything moving in the right direction.
No one will give you a medal for putting up with bad situations believe me I know.xxx

hi the last place in apts we lived the manager really was great for letting us call him and he sent a repair man to fix whatever was wrong He said most managers would rather have something repaired than have the tenant let it go and damage the apartment instead. she was really too hot but was afraid to call the manager so I would h ave called public housing authority then and told them I needed to have the heat source repaired as I could not get it turned down and it was too hot in my apt.,They will send a repair man at once and he will repair whatever needs it and then bill the manager.

Every tenant has the right to complain if there is something that needs to be fixed in the apartment that they are staying. I mean, they are paying for it and they expect a good and comfortable place to live in.

hi jenny yes I really feel you must call the manager and ask him to repair the problem politely but firmly. then if he refuses you go to the housing authority and tell them the problem and they will
send a repair man to fix it and bill the manager,no reason to just let it go,

Hello Hatley!
There are times that I go the "grin and bear it" route. But 98% of the time, I will do something about it.
I really do not like things that get under my skin, and so I let people know about it. A long time ago, I learned a lesson about just accepting things and then watching it get worse and people take advantage of things too, is not the answer.
So, after that, I saw that people are less prone to run you over and take heed when you open your mouth to say something.
I dont always open my mouth to talk, because for one I love speaking through the written word, but when I do speak I dont waste words... There are many things a person can do to make sure they are not being used, and not having to worry about having to bear things they should not.
One is our courts, and police, and friends, and family. This makes sure that the thing that is making it uncomfortable for you to bear is seen by more than one person and it will get fixed a whole lot quicker.

It depends on the situation, in some minor cases it's better to grin and bare it. But, I would be one to say something if the temperature in my apartment was off. Living there, you should be in comfort.

I'm a first timer to live in an apartment and I will be staying here for a year now. I don't want my landlord feels I am too complaining but whenever there's something wrong, like leaks in the ceiling, I do show it to my landlord. I don't want to fix it because I might damage his property but I don't want to ignore it either because he might blame me for not telling it and may lead to worse conditions. I think it's best to let the owner know what things are broken, accidentally ofcourse, so he himself can solve it because it's his house in the first place.

hi joizee as so many here have said how can the owner or manager fix something if you do not tell him it needs to be repaired. I always do call the landlord when something is not working right as I want things to work since I paid the rent and am supposed to have things working.

Oh I definitely would have called the landlord and got it fixed. I just hate being too hot or too cold. If a person is paying rent then they should politely ask for the problem to be solved. I would not suffer if I was the person just hoping that it would be soilved as sometimes we just have to be proactive and get things done

I would do something about it not grin and bear it. If I was too cold or too hot I would definitely call the landlord to fix the problem. If you don't call the landlord how would he know that there is a problem. If I'm paying rent to a landlord I don't want to be cold or very hot. I want to be comfortable. I'm so grateful I haven't had to live in an apartment in almost 30 years.

hi lelikln here in Soluthern California most have to live in apartments as houses are very expensive and even in apartments the rent is outrageous. So I sure would not want to pay good rent then be too hot or too cold so I have called the manager. He was very knd and sent his maintenance man to repair our heat so we would no longer be melting.Like you say the manager cannot fix something unless he knows about it.so I would surely call him.

hi John thats a very important part for managers. So in a sense she would be helping out the managers to keep costs down by calling him to tell him her apartment is was too hot.She does not want to bother b ut she will just stay uncomfortable until whatever is causing the heat to be too hot is repaired. I would joust call and ask for some help myself.

No matter where you are living, if you are paying for your place to the owner - you should get what you pay for. And that includes a healthy, comfortable, indoor living environment.
We rent a house. The central fan/air conditioning is broken. I text my landlord every morning and will continue to do so until he gets someone out here to fix it. If he doesn't, I will call the Health Department. My husband and I both have bad allergies that are heightened in the spring and summer - and without central air they are in full swing.
If THAT doesn't do the trick, I'll just deduct the cost of a few room air cons from the rent.

i guess, we need to do something rather than bearing the pain. life is made of choices, and that if there is a better option to choose and to implement it, then why not do it
that is good that in your apartment there is a maintenance that will aid costumer's necessities for everyone's convenience like you.
