In this world full of competition where every1 is just running to come first in their field is it really so important to achieve the topmost grade and highest score /marks in the class? But if you don't you do not end up with medals and trophys. But is it so important in the long run?Do you think understanding and learning is more important or is it just the grade

Getting marks is important and if you are a person who is capable of being on top then you must achieve that, but depth is also required .this is possible only if you choose subjects and specialize in them because getting depth of knowledge in all areas is not possible. This can be achieved as you get to senior classes and enter University for higher education.
Getting top marks and good performance are the benchmarks to grade a student in school and college. Nowadays, there is so much of importance given to learning things by rote and personally I know a few youngsters who have got marks but are really shallow and give wrong answers to any question asked. They get an extraordinary superiority complex on account of getting marks and this prevents them from learning further.
Never lose the spirit of learning and must be aware that learning is a never ending process and the more you learn the more inadequate you are likely to feel because knowledge has no bounds.
To your question about marks—do as well as you can. There is not a great difference among the top .But ensure you are an all-rounder. This will make up for inadequacies in certain areas of weakness.

I think that teachers should teach a lesson till the class understands it totally..and not forget it the next day. I have seen it happening over and over again. It's tragic really. If they taught it better and longer instead of in a rush trying to shove a lot of learning in a short period of time. Then they would all get good grades, or the majority would.

Understanding the subject is more important. Some people freeze on exams and forget the answer and these will never get the top mark because of that. You though have to be the best that you can be, not the best that someone else considers is the best.

I would choose the second one. It is better and really important to understand the subject and learn more than just having a high grades. Although grades can help when we first look for a job because Transcript of Records is one of the requirements in a applying the job, it is still important to have a learning and knowledge. Sometimes, grades can be bought.

Having good grades serves as an indicator whether a child is good in the subject or not but there are also many factors to consider such as the teacher, the school or the student himself. For one to understand the subject, what he needs is the willingness to learn and no grade can match that.

I do know that there are two kinds of student: one who reads and memorizes and one who reads and understands. The first kind may have good grades but that would sometimes be depending on the type of test given to a student. While the other type of student, no matter what kind of test questions you give him, he will surely be able to answer them.
So, it is better to really understand and have good grades than acquire high grades from which the lessons do not stick in your mind.

No. Neither one. What's important, is knowing the right things to do with the knowledge you're given ... to learn how to use that knowledge to obey Our Father (the Monster of Flying Spagetti - )

Grades are the main consideration why a company or school will hire/accept you. So yes, it is also important to achieve high grades. It also means you are able to fully understand the lessons taught because you studied hard in order to get that high grade.
Although personally, I don't think grades should determine whether one should be accepted or not. Grades will not tell whether a particular student is "good enough" when it comes to practical application. And there are many others who are also good enough but was not able to ace a particular subject.

If I were to give my idealistic answer, it would definitely be understanding the subject. But then grades are very important nowadays. I really think that it would really be hard to choose between these two things since they are both very important.I mean, of course a company would higher someone with higher grades than someone who has had to take a subject twice to understand it. But I also think that these two are interrelated. If you are able to understand the subject matter then you should have high grades right?

Yes. Understanding and learning is far more important than the Grade/Score/marks. What is the use of the knowledge if you don't understand it correctly. If you understands a subject you can get good marks automatically, but you may or may not be the topper.
At least you have the knowledge even if you are not a topper.

Having top grades/marks would be really beneficial, up to some extent. I mean, when you go out in the real world, the qualifications does not only consist of what's on your transcript but I don't think it's that easy to compete to get the job when you don't have "competitive" marks to begin with. Again, it's not all about grades, but it's a "qualifying" factor.
Although, based on my experience, there are also times when I'm torn between a subject that would give me good grades and a subject that would teach me a lot but the grade is not that high. Like what they always say, we always have to know what our weighs more. :))
Hope you are having a nice day! WE CAN DO THIS!

Numbers represent measurable knowledge. I get A would mean "I can answer the questions because I understand it". It is good. It also means that I am a deligent student who submit all my assignments, requirements, etc. This is good. On the other hand, achievement-driven attitude without thinking of the others or working for the common good, is not a mark of a truly wise expert person.

I think understanding the subject is much more important. The grade, the marks doesn't have much meanings in our life. We won't carry the grades with us, but the knowledge will always be with us.
I am glad I finally found an education system for my kids, which I do not need to let them stay in the competition study world, at least at their young age. I will homeschool them, with Waldorf education, which doesn't emphasize in grades and results at all, but more focus on the child development. To me, this is much more important.

I think understanding the subject is more useful than just getting good grades. We go to school to acquire knowledge, but what is the point of it unless we use it later on in life. If we want to be able to use what we learn we need to understand it first. I find that most people that get good grades just learn some material off by heart and end up forgetting it in a few weeks time.

I think that with every one running around trying to get the top marks, it is even more imperative that you understand the material and have the knowledge to be able to apply it in your field. I think both top marks and the understanding that comes wtih those top marks goes hand in hand, because honestly if you are just getting good marks but not really understanding the material then you are just screwing yourself over for when you get out of school.
People really need to realize that learning is about the knowledge, it is about the enlightening that comes with a full understanding. If you only half know the material, or are bull shi***** to get the marks then what is the point?
Top marks are incredibly important if you are going for a top job in your field, but I value the understanding as well.
You want to be able to interconnect the two and have both.

I think understanding is more important than grades. But now-a-days exactly opposite happens grades are given more importance than understanding. Because of this stress level has also increased. Sometimes students get frustated and just give up

this is a competitive word where you need qualifications to succeed in life. so you do require high grades in our studies to be well placed in your life. but that doesnt mean that you should get the grade just by cramming. we should try to balance between the two. the ideal case will be to get a high grade with full understanding of the subject. but i can say one thing if you have high grade you will get your job but only if you have got that high grade with complete understanding you will be successful in your career.

For me both of them are really important. Understanding the subject or lesson is to prepare you for test and be evaluated of what you've understood. In the long run, it is knowledge. Definitely that knowledge is applicable with daily life and with professional life. You need to know what you need to do. Being in the top or receiving medals and trophies is simply motivation. Those are consequences of studying hard or inattentiveness in class. In the real world, those valedictorians or top graduates (known as sumacumlaude) are the ones companies want to have. They are considered assets to bring in better production for the companies. What they have is they excelled among their colleagues, it means they are special. What makes them special is their only secret. ;)
