With the news of the knifings in Texas are we going to ban knives? Or are we going to deal with the real issue and that is the mentally ill people. President Obama promised us after the last shooting that this was going to be a top priority but he seems to talk one thing and his party is trying to make it more difficult to purchase a gun for law abiding citizens.
At times it seems that the rights of the person committing the crime out weigh the rights of ordinary citizens. We can't force a mentally ill person to get an evaluation unless they commit a crime then the tax payer pays for attorneys, and treatment and specialists and the cost of a trial. I have worked with several parents who have mentally ill children and they want help but can't get help until the criminal justice system gets involved.
This latest case seems to indicate that the problem is not the weapon but the person and until we deal with that we can put all the regulations in place and they will only create more government jobs, frustrate law abiding citizens and over burden the legal system with unnecessary work. The first thing that seems to happen is what was wrong with the criminal and was it really their fault. It is time to get real and address the problem and not try to make the gun the criminal instead of the person behind it.

Hi,
There shall come a time that the government shall become so ineffective to address criminality it would be making laws to ban every possible weapons that human can use to kill including his own hands. It would be interesting to note how to do this, maybe bringing two hands in public is considered dangerous and can cause potential crime. You are right to note that to get into the real issue is to consider the human being as the potential criminal and not the weapon itself. It is time to make studies about our understanding of human behaviour and how criminals are made in order to avert future crimes. This should include social conventions, economic situation, moral and spiritual values formation and the like. It should be time to think seriously about it.
