keeping a gun at home

There are some countries which completely ban the use of guns. In some other countries though, it is allowed, but you have to go through a very strict licensing process to acquire one.
What's your opinion about keeping a gun at home?

It might be helpful in protecting the family from the bad elements of society, but then again the fear of having the kids around and accidentally play with it is another issue.
