Urine sandals? Whoops!

You know, Target is really taking a hit with its recent image of clothing and accessories. They recently came under fire because a gray dress in a petite size was called light gray. The same dress only in s plus size was labeled Manatee Gray. MANATEE gray. Manatees are huge animals. So if you're thin you're wearing a light gray dress, but if you aren't, you are wearing a manatee colored dress. Once it came to light, Target pulled the descritpion from its website.

Whoopsie! One of my first job was to make packaging for consumer products. My responsibilities included reading copy that might otherwise be viewed as offensive or embarrassing. Not to toot my own horn, but I'd never let anything like this go. It's amazing that this would happen considering a good chunk of the country is spanish-speaking.

Ha ha! It's easy to do, but equally easy, you'd imagine, for a large company to do a check.

I am sure we have but then again this is America and that is the language we use. There are lots of words that mean different things here then the do in other places you can't make everyone happy but you can make American's happy.

Haha before reading the whole discussion , i thought it is a sandal made out of urine , that why it interest me to read the whole discussion. No issues it is just a name and this would be make the product famous and easy to be remembered , can this not be a good marketing strategy ! There was even a marketing strategy worst than this , i think it is a resto bar where in the concept is all about a call of nature which means bowl was there , table looks like a bowl , every utensils shape lie a hygiene tool . I think this can be found in one of the resto bar in Japan , i am not just so sure about the place.

Haha! It's like walking in urin or having urine inside shoes! I have the similar one but it's a name of a veggie. Here in Philippines, we have lots of dialects that makes one word have a lot of names that makes the word very fun. String beans are called "sitaw" in Tagalog which is my dialect. But in the northern part of Philippines, it's called "utong" which in English is "nipple". :D

I haven't been to a target store in quite a while....I bet that was a surprise. But you are right. It's so easy to check things out with the internet! I am making a line of Spanish cards for my next craft sale...all you do is type the word in and it's right in front of you!

I had not heard of them...the funny thing is my husband works for Target and I just asked him and he laughed. He said he had heard of something but it had already been corrected at his location...he wasn't sure because he is not on the sales floor where all that is done. You would think someone would have noticed that before everything was completed.

Oh this is so funny - definitely a whoops moment. I cannot think of an example off hand but will have to think about it. You would have thought that someone would have checked though?

A very peculiar name for a sandals indeed. I encounter many names also which has different meaning in other language. There are a lot of it. Even in our country, we have different dialects that we speak, and sometimes we can across to a word which has different meaning in each native dialect.

I`d fire the people in charge of names! What`s wrong with using the very beautiful name "Irene"? Why change it? I don`t remember product names with different meanings, but in South and Central America, although we all speak Spanish, there are several words that have a different meaning in each country. There are even words thst in somecountries they are bad words and in others, the word is perfectly safe to use.

If someone is America where the official language is English, the only concern should be the English meaning. If they don't like the meaning in Spanish, then go home.

That's pretty funny. They should really look further into names before naming their lines. I just read recently they had this public apology due to them naming a plus size line manatee. They set themselves up for it, they really do!
