Readable Writing According to Rudolf Flesch

I was very young when I read The Art of Readable Writing by Rudolf Flesch. He had a formula to measure how good or readable your writing really is. He can tell by analyzing the words in your writing if some high school teenager can actually read it. It was amazing. I have plenty of writing books in my personal library and from what I read, his idea hasn't been applied on a grander scale. I don't know if it is common knowledge because I've only encountered it once as criteria in a writing gig.

Actually, it has to do with the number of syllables in a sentence or paragraph. And this will be divided by the number of words in the same sentence or paragraph. Here's a wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flesch-Kincaid_Readability_Test With this formula, you can actually compare your writing with those in popular magazines and check where you belong.

I don't think such measures indicate anything about the "understandability" of the message being conveyed. It must surely be talking about reading ease thereby "implying" some kind of understyandability as the measure has a bearing on the attention holding capability of a say 12 year old or so. Still there are many other attributes that need to be worked at to make a book really an interesting and useful for its own-declared-pupose read.

I've been using a readability test tool for about four or five years now. Whenever I'm writing articles and I want to get an idea of the readability or grade level I use this handy tool or if I'm using Microsoft word I make sure that I check the readability tool. Here is the link to this tool : www.read-able.com/ . You're right bloggeroo some writing assignments do call for a grade level usually between 8-9th grade. This was the reason I looked for a readability test tool at the time, so I could measure the reading difficulty of my writings. This tool works well it even measure several other indexes and text statistics.

I think make a readable writing need knowledge about writing and art of writing. There are many styles of readable writing, they depend on the type of writing. If you want to learn more about readable writing you should read other books to enrich your knowledge. Have a nice day.

Wow. I didn't know that the readability of writing can be measured by the words, syllables and sentences in it. I'm going to try this out the next time I write something. I used to be very fond of writing articles with very long sentences in them. Then my teacher told me to divide them into smaller sentences. It must have been hard to read.
