My Dog Will be Confined At The Hospital for More Than a Week

Pumba, my dog is almost ten years old and right now I am not prepared to see him go. When he had his check up early this year, he was placed on steroids and B-complex maintenance. Before that, we almost didn't sleep because we could feel his pain and discomfort. I and my husband carried him to the car because he couldn't walk already. He was given a shot of steroid. Since then, everytime we see him having difficulty moving, we would buy Prednisone. But two days ago, I was again crying helplessly while talking to our dog and asking him what was really happening. I could feel he was in pain. Remembering that and even as I write this experience right now, I am crying.
At the hospital, he was extracted for blood chemistry and CBC. Liver tests are normal and the blood tests showed low platelet count. Now I know why I saw some blood in his stool. He still had to be observed for six days. Suspect is blood parasite which he was diagnosed of having in 2007 and just remained dormant in his blood. Also, the doc suspects hip dysplasia due to his age.
This situation is very hard for us. Our dog is used to sleeping in our room, beside our bed, knowing we, his parents are with him al, the time. He is used to sleeping in an airconditioned room when the temperature outside really gets high. He is a baby who now feels alone in an animal hospital's huge cage. I would daily cry whenever we visit to feed him and he would just cry and move a lot almost wanting to go out of his cage, desperately asking to be home as we see in his teary eyes and almost husky voice.
The attendants said this morning that during his second night at the hospital, he was just crying. Our baby dog feels very lonely. Whenever we come to visit him, we would tell him it's for his own good that he had to stay there temporarily especially that he was being given therapy and massage daily.
Hey, dog lovers, have you been this extremely lonely about your dog? I just can't explain it, but our attachment is more like a real family. I am really crying right now..but writing this gives me such relief.

I think every person that has an old dog experienced that. Our first dog had to be put to sleep three years ago. She was 13 and she had been terribly ill for over two years.
I know how sad you must feel when you look next to your bed and don't see Pumba. I wonder why didn't you take him at home over the night. You could have taken him back to the hospital every morning. I think the dog must have felt better knowing that he's with you than being alone in a strange cage, inside a hospital.
I hope he will pass over this ugly episode and you will be able to enjoy his presence for a few years more.

Oh my, your comment made me cry even harder. Thank you for wishing well about Pumba's recovery. He will recover..I just need to believe that, it gives me joy. And yes, I have thought about bringing him home and just send him back for therapy and obsevation but we didn't know yet during that time what would happen to him. The vet originally said Pumba needs a 24-hour observation, so we agreed. But when we came back it became a week already. But as we saw him this third day, he's a lot better. I actually suggested to my husband to have him go home and just go back to the vet daily for another four days. He might be placed on meds if the vet finds out that his suspected hip dysplasia is reversible. We really hope and pray it's reversible, or else, we might put him on an apparatus so he could still move actively. It really breaks my heart.

Hello, Frugal Bree. Thanks a lot for wishing Pumba well. Our dogs can be very expressive of their love for us. That's why we cannot but love them back with greater intensity. Haha! I really miss Pumba now. He is still confined for therapy and treatment and more tests.

When I was young, we never really get to have a dog which last for more 5 years up. Because sometimes unexpected accident happen to our dog. Right now, we have a dog and we call him "Poypoy" his on 4 years and going strong. We really hope he can go as more than 10 years. We really need to take good care of him, especially that he is getting old. We have to protect him as well.
I feel sad for your dog "Pumba", just have faith and I am sure he will soon get healed. He will back soon on your home. Keep praying for his past recovery. All dogs get to this stage were they get sick just like humans. We must always take good care of their health as well. Just continue on your support, I am sure it will be over soon.
Update us for any changes on his status. We are also praying for his faster recovery.

Hello, pals. Thank you for your wishing well of Pumba. He's still at the hospital. He's stronger now. I would always go along with my husband when it's time to feed him and talk to him but I never showed myself in. He would feel even more sad when he sees me. He always cries, the attendants and vets said. Today was his repeat blood chem and complete blood count tests. He will also have an x-ray of his hip before he is released.
Tomorrow will be celebration day for his homecoming. Regards to your Poypoy. Take good care of him.
