Living in a third world country, finding a descent job was not easy but the problem now is finding the first job. I have been hearing complaint about hard to find the first job. The problem about that is most of the companies are now hiring those who have experience and the other problem about that is if you do not have experience but if you graduated in a popular school you get get a job. How about those who do not graduate in a popular school? What can you suggest? Thank you. Have a good day!!

Applying for a job is like selling yourself to the company. Make you resume impressive. Make sure you know what job you are applying for and you really know your skills. On job interview, come to the office early, dress well and you must be confident when they are asking you.

i could guess, you have just graduated from college...looking for you first job is really tough, and i am wishing you luck in you search for one. But it's not true, that only the popular schools are getting the good breaks always...what is important is how you present yourself in your job interview...you must practice good communication skills, and package yourself well...esp. your resume...be confident and do not let them think you are lesser that the other applicants. There will be exams to take - aptitude test and psychological tests - these will be part of your packaging...passing them will give you an advantage from the others...Good luck...I know you will make it! Remember this, some companies would rather hire those from unpopular schools, they are more loyal and wlll stay longer with the company. Avoid changing employers more often.

In our company, we don't look at where the person graduated. We look at the result of her/his exams and interview.

There are only a few jobs for the thousands of college graduates every year. If you were on the side of the company, it is typical to choose those who graduated from the more prestigious schools like UP. Ateneo or Mapua because of the high standards of education. If you come from a not so popular school, your best bet to gain employment on the big companies is to excel with your grades. With the stiff competition for employment, excellent grades can be your advantage over other applicants. Experience does not necessarily come in except if you are applying for a supervisory of managerial position. A company makes an investment on new employees and it is expected that they will always choose those who can be asset to their profitability and productivity to offset their time and efforts at providing training.

yes that was true but not all unfamous schools do not provide quality education. I can say that our school gives us quality education despite of being unfamous. I do understand your point but in the interview i can say that they can filter those who have potential and those who do not, not just by school.

in my experiences,i had encountered this situation several times.when i handed over my resume, the interviewer firstly asked me"which school are you graduated from?", i told him my school, certainly, not a popular one.the result was obviously no.gradually, i had to send my resume to many small companies which were not strict with the school you graduated from relatively.finally i got my first job.i regard this job as the chance of accumulating experiences.some day i will have enouch experiences to find a better job.

Hi Gelomon! I also have to say that the companies are fond of selecting applicants based on their schools. It's a qualifying factor but it's not all so I think the best thing that can be done is to have an impressive transcript. It's a bit saddening to know that this is what's happening but we also have to remember that there's no other way but this. I mean, in the real world, there are a lot of graduates who came from top performing schools with impressive skills. So, I guess it's best to know what makes you stand out and work on that. Good luck!

Hello gelomon, I don't why we have to include the word "third world" which was initiated by the west to characterized a certain nation or a country. people in our country should start knowing why we have this kind of problem and what is the root cause of it. there are serious problem in this country but that doesn't mean we have to get stuck being in the third world. the govt is to blame and should change it's foreign investment policy

Sorry for the vague term. I should have said Developing Country. Yes, the government is the root cause of it. But let us not just blame the government. We people also have the problem. We elected those who are sitting now in their positions and now the election is near, they are promoting what they have done and i think we should elect those who will correct the problem of our country now. Those who will lead us to better future and those who will give many jobs that can help all of us. Jobs that are not just for those who graduated from prestigious schools. Have a good day. :)

You need to have skills. These will be your advantage over the other applicants. You need to have communications skills as well as other technical skills like driving, computer programming, encoding, filing, answering the phone, etc. Polish your skills and do not be afraid to apply in many companies, not just one or two. Always be ready for rejections and be ready to move quickly and find other suitable companies.

I have some skills that you have said. And the others, i will try to develop. We have been taught on how to communicate properly through a telephone that it should be 3 rings before we answer the phone. I think it is also needed that we have a pleasing personality and a presentable look?

Hi,
Some companies hire candidates from prestigious universities thinking they offer more skill from the good quality of training they get, good training equals good skills that can be an asset to the company whose primary concern is to amass the greater amount of profit at lesser cost. Graduates from less known schools generally had slap-dash training and fare poorly in the workplace and could be a liability in the long run. Given equal opportunity and after-hire training, those who are graduates from big universities has an edge over their lesser counterparts even if a person is having equal talents and abilities.

that is a sad story that maybe i can experience in the near future but i do not want to. There is a bias in selecting applicants to be hired. Like you said that even that you both have equal abilities and skills, they are more likely to choose those who graduated from prestigious schools. That was not fair. Life is not that easy. Studying was not too. And it is not that unpopular schools offer less teachings. Many graduates experience this now and i am sad for them.

Hi
you are right while studying i used to think that finding/getting a job is dam easy if we have college degree. But the truth was something else when i started searching for the job. Yes they (companies) ask for experience candidates and i dont understand how could the fresh graduates get the experience. More over the freshers are taken by the companies in the campus selection but the number is very less and where will the rest of the candidates go if they dont get selected in the campus interview?
And as you mentioned graduation from famous or top schools is also necessary and where will the candidates who studies from the normal schools go? and who cant afford doing to top schools. Ahh whole lot of complications.

You got my point of view, since there are many students that graduated from non popular school, the chances that they have is lower. And for a student like me thinking about the future, i do not want to experience those things because i have a plan for my life. What would happen to those who did not graduate in a popular school? They will just get a medeocre job? Sigh. :(

I think it is so easy to get down when struggling to find a job but my advice is not to give up,if you keep trying and not give up then someone out there will give you a chance to prove yourself.

yes not giving up is the best thing that every applicant should do but if their preference is those who graduated in prestigious schools and those who have experience, where will the graduates from not prestigious schools? If they are lucky enough they can enter the company of their dreams. But when i graduate i will surely take your advice :) have a nice day!

I am studying in a not so famous college and we are taking our OJT now. We applied to a famous telephone company at the same time the other students from known universities are applying there also. At the end they refused us. I think it is because they like the students from known and famous schools.

I came from premier state university and it really helped me get my first job. This is because my boss came from the same school and having that knowledge of quality education, it was an easy decision for her. But when I tried to apply for my second company, my dream company actually. I applied there for three times before I was accepted. I endure one more year in my previous job before transferring. Luckily, another year to my skill helped me get through and finally I got to work in my dream company. So the school and skills are both considered in finding the job. Some prefer to study post-grad to get the dream job and be much competitive applicant against the others. Some apply to their OJT companies since they've already have the chance of working there. Good luck, hope you'll get a job soon! ;)

You, graduating in a known school really helped you alot to get your first job. That was great! And the second job or your dream job just require you experience so you do not get that much pressure not like those who are not from popular school. Thanks. I am only 4th year college this coming semester and we will undergo OJT hope we find an company fast :)

if you want to prosper in a career you must do all it takes, provided that you did not come from a well known school you can still do something about that, just be more persistent. Everything has to start small. You can do it, you are "pinoy" that should be enough to start with.

Maybe if you have an OJT experience you could try placing them in your resume so that you can show to them that you have experience that already. I think you could not prevent employers to pick those that cam from known schools because they usually produce the best employees for their companies so there is really that bias in those things. So if you are experiencing hard time getting a job you should persevere more to show that you are qualified for the job you are applying for. In time there will be someone out there that will pick you up and once you get it you should be prepared to deliver what they ask of you to do.

I think you should need to make a more impressive resume. In that the employer will also be impressed with the applicant.

Hi. :) There are jobs that do not require so much experience. I suggest you try on those first and maybe after some time that you get the experience required by your dream job, you can pursue applying for what you really want. Who knows? You might even grow to love the job you were only acquiring experience from. :) Good luck!
