A few weeks ago my husband gave us the ok to let people know we were looking for a Kitten with 6 toes. I don't think he realized how quickly word spreads and sure enough my cousin emailed me yesterday that someone had one that was still quite young. I contacted him a few days ago and set it up to go and see the kitty today. We brought her home of course, and everyone loves her. She is 4-5 months old and very cute.
Cats with more then the allotted toes are called Polydactyl, or Hemingway's Cats. I was wondering how many of you might have seen, heard, or even have one of these cats, and what you named them. She came with the name Mittens but I am not sure that name is going to stick, we usually let our animals pick their names.

Can I first ask why it is that you guys were looking for a cat with 6 toes? I have never had one or known anyone that had one, but I have heard of them. The way I went about naming my cats always varied. I named my first cat Alaska because at the time, 5th grade, we had been learning about the state of Alaska :P My next cat India (R.I.P) :( I named because she was a long haired tortoiseshell and just looked "exotic". My cat Milo I named after Milo from "Milo and Otis" because he was just mischievous. My last cat Belle, well we didn't intend to keep her at first, she was a little feral kitten I found by the dumpster. I called her princess as a nick name because I knew if i gave her an official name Id get too attached.... but we ended up keeping her and named her Belle after belle from "Beauty and the Beast" :)

My husband has always wanted one, and I think he thought it would be really hard to find one, but once we had he had to follow through with his promise of a new kitty.

You can let your animals pick their names or you can name them by their actions ,appearances and habit. One of my friend named his dog King Kong because the dog is always angry, another friend of mine named her Cat Rapunzel because the Cat has lot of hair.Best wishes.

I have heard of them, knew they were Hemingway cats, but never have had one in my family.I saw your picture on the other site and her paws do look like mittens, but they also remind me of Minnie and Mickey mouse hands and I would probably call her Minnie or Mickey, since both can be feminine names. I understand about names to fit personality though. Most interesting name I have ever heard for a cat that had boots or socks was Reebok.

Interesting I will keep the Minnie and Mickey as back ups and let you all know when we finally name her. Thank you for following me both on here and over at gather. I enjoy having friends on all of my social sites.

i've read about them, but we've never had them or know anyone who did.
actually, i'm not sure if there are such breeds where i am. hmm, probably not, since according to wikipedia, Cats with this genetically inherited trait are most commonly found along the East Coast of North America (in the United States and Canada) and in South West England and Wales.
but thanks to mylot, i finally met one named mister with 14 toes. you can read about him here:

Any significance on this Kitten with 6 toes? Is there any specific reason that you are looking for such Kitten? I am just curious but I do not have any pet animals in the house. However, back in my dad's home town, he had two big dogs in his durian plantation. The dogs will take charge of the surroundings and work like caretakers

Funny you should ask. Meow is what my grand daughter calls kitties so we were thinking that just might become her name. When we say Meow, she says it back to us.
