Blame the economy or ourselves?

While I'm having my dinner, I reflect back how my parents managed their finances while raising us up. There are 4 of us. My father worked as a taxi driver and my mother was a full time housewife. I heard that back then, the economy was not that bad. Prices were not as high as now. But imagine, how much can a taxi driver earn per month? It's not fixed, depending on how hard he worked. He once told me that he could bring back about $500. That was 34 years ago. Wait.. $500 ? "Are you kidding me?" I thought. He could even buy us good and quality clothes. We get to go for holidays at least twice a year. With that amount of income, how on earth can he do all that ? Wow ! So, blame the economy or ourselves for not being able to manage our finances now? Some people earn more than $2000 a month but yet they are in debts or trying ways how to manage better. What's your view on this?

I think it is the people of today. Things back then were simplier. Folks didn't go out and charge that newest electronic gadget on the old credit card because they did not exist! If my parents did not have the money for something they did not just go out and charge it. They saved the money and paid cash for it. If the tv went out oh well we had to make due until a new one could be afforded. The only bills that my parents had that were based on making monthly payments were the mortgage and the car payment. These days everyone has to have the newest and the best of everything. I talked to my friend today who has one of the Iphones. Well the thing is messing up and she was complaining about it. I asked her didn't she have insurance on it and she shocked me by saying that they don't carry insurance on the Iphones..... Well I am sorry but why pay so much for that gizmo if you can't get it insured???!!!! We are the have now generation. Everyone wants the best no matter if they can really afford it or not!

Oh yes and might I add that this friend of mine is out of work collecting unemployment and living with her mother and step father...... She has been out of work for a while and as long as she is receiving unemployment payments she will stay out of work. She does not pay rent to her mother/step father but buys everything she wants off of the shelves and has no problem borrowing gas money from them when she is on E!!!

A house here costs over a million dollars. Rent is over a thousand per month for a two bedroom apartment. So a lot of the problem is the economy: everything costs a lot. But some is just that we have wasted a lot of money throughout our lifetime, so I have to be mindful of that. I keep thinking that we should be more careful but then we never are. (Although we have gotten out of debt, so at least we've done that)

Yeah we can blame them both. Our economy help us to get better. Even if the economy is good if you're not helping yourself, you will suffer too. I can blame the economy but there's little I can do to change it so I just blame myself.

i think it's not how big or how little you earn. it's how much you spend and what you spend on (like stuff that are wants not needs, or stuff that depreciate), how much you save and if they earn interest (not hidden at home), and if you have investments like say rental apartments or a small business.

I think it's due to inflation. The prices are rising high and high but the income is only increasing very slowly.

In my opinion, instead of blaming others and the economy, we need to look into our own matters. The day we, the human have disturbed balance in our lives, we are facing problems. We have stretched our needs. Thing, which used to be a luxury in the past have become our necessity. This is the punch line. Look deeply in this punch line and you will find answers to your questions.

That's the way things go. Blaming the economy and ourselves don't help. We had better do our best with the occupation we have and increase our skills hence our worth. That hopefully can help us get better income and do well financially over time.
