Directory Submission Seems More Difficult Than Anticipated

I thought it was just a simple matter to have my blog listed in directories. I'll just fill out an online form and submit my blog URL for indexing. Apparently, the listing process is more than that. You got to verify your identity and prove that your blog is of high quality. And it seems that directories are not created equal. Those with paid listing services are more likely to prove effective at being recognized by search engines. Yahoo, for example, will index your site if you pay to get listed in the more notable directories. Anywhere else and you get ignored. It seems I need to be more creative in finding traffic and building my online reputation. I just don't have the money to spend for directory listings.
