To us who live in the Southern Hemysphere, our Summer bounty is over and we must start plannig for Winter. Where I live fortunatly Winters are mild, so I already have lettuce seeglings, small chard plants transplanted to their final place and arucule sown here and there to collect as soon as they can be pulled. I am very much interested in planting potatoes, but I don`t know yet where I will get the potstoe seeds. Can you do some gardening in Winter? What do you plant? I have heard that Winter in many places is too cold to do any gardening at all. Share!

We rarely get snow, but it does get down to the 20's and 30's at night, 40's and 50's during the day. Southern California is warmer...

I had the idea that California was like my country. But I also have the wrong idea that all my country is like the city where I live. Dumb me!

Where I live winter is not too bad but we can have some very cold days! so my garden will be planted with winter vegies and herbs which I can cover at night against the frost at the moment I Am trying to build a wall garden which will be along the fence in my court yard so we will see how that is going to work! about potatoes I usually cut the sprouts from a normal potato and put it in the ground and it grows fine otherwise ask your greengrocer for seed potatoes they should be able to get you some...happy gardening!!!

My wall garden is a project I had for a long time now I Am waiting for someone to give me a hand fixing the brackets on the fence so I can put the pots in place! I will share the pictures when all is done.

I`ll be happy to see it and to copy it. It seems such a good idea and you will use the sun and light the best way.

I will check what I have in the place where I put the potatoes. Usually I find some sprouted potatoes. You should take pictures of your wall garden to give us bright ideasThanks for sharing

I loved visiting you in March 2012, I saw your delightful garden and comfortable house. Yes, your seasons are the reverse of ours in England here in the Northern Hemisphere. It was a warm and sunny autumn time when I visited you. It had been spring time in my home country. I can only do gardening in the spring and summer then I stop in the autumn when it gets colder. I have cut my grass and tomorrow hope to get it the second cut of the gardening season. In the winter we get night frost and some places get snow. In my garden I grow hardy looking tropical plants like the New Zealand Cabbage Palm. I have got a shed which I painted blue to look like a beach house. Good luck with your gardening my dear friend.

Thank you so much, Maxine. I don`t know if you saw my veggies when you came: there is a moment in the year when summer crops are over and we don`t have winter crops yet. I am going to have chard (to make an awesome leek and chard soup I love), lettuce and arugule. I will see if it`s worth it to plant other things.

Hope your winter garden does well. It gets too cold here to have a garden in the winter. I will be so glad when the farmer's market starts up here again. I love fresh veggies. Wish our climate was where we could have something fresh like u all the time. Good luck w/your planting.

As you know, Jo, our winters are mild. There is some frost some days in the middle of the winter, but there is no snow nd I can cover the plants with a sort of plastic roof.

We garden the year round but tend to plant some crops during the so called rainy season to get them going if we do not have irrigation. I am planning to do potatoes too - growing them in a bag. I have a few bananas that have started to shoor and a plantain too. There are breadfruits on the tree but they are small yet and wonders of wonders - the mango trees are bearingThat's about it at the moment

I have a friend who lives in an apartment and she has 2 continers with potato plants. I should do that this year. I love mangos but they don`t grow where I live. I`d love to go to Jamaica sometime. I feel a romantic thrill when I hear the name

Honestly, what you've just covered here is one of the reasons that I really do wish that I lived in an area where the winters are more mild than what we experience because I absolutely hate the sad colors that I associate with winter. I don't know anything at all about winter gardening so I'm not able to help you with winter crops that you could have but I certainly hope that you have the best of luck with your winter garden.

Thanks, friend. Where exactly do you live? I read in your profile that it is Lexington, but I don`t know where it is. I hope that someday you will live in a place with milder winters. I feel that the older I get, the more sun I need

I wish I could also experience winter. We only have wt and dry season in our place. So where do you plant during this season? When you say winter, does it always mean with ice? Have a nice day!

Where I live, Winter does not mean ice. It gets cold and it rains often and there are many gray days. The days are shorter too and the sun is not as warm. With this kind of climate I can plant many cold season veggies. I could plant beets, carrots and the like. But it is not worth it because I can buy them with little expense. I like to plant greens. They will be fresher and I don`t use pesticides in my garden.
