Cat refuses to come out of the laundry

Hiya everybody :)
Our youngest cat, Smokey, refuses to come out of the laundry and into the house. Smokey used to come inside when the kids were at school and my partner was at work. He used to be a real skitish cat as he was dumped when he was just a kitten. Smokey was really coming out of his shell during the second half of last year and was becoming quiet cheeky just before everything changed.
My partner's Uncle came over from England for a month over the Christmas period. Had I known before he arrived that he didn't like cats, he wouldn't have stayed for a month, believe me. Smokey refused to come inside. Our other cat, Allegro, still came inside but kept to the kitchen area where I was most of the time. Although, looking back, Allegro wasn't allowed inside too often because there was a chance that she would escape as the Uncle wasn't too concerned about keeping the doors closed all the time.
We tried to get Smokey inside but he would just sit at the laundry door and wail, loudly! The wails would become more frantic the longer we left him and he would start to jump up at the door handle, willing it to open. So, we figured that it was easier for all concerned if Smokey stayed in the laundry.
After the Uncle flew off to New Zealand in mid-January and my partner went back to work, Smokey was back to normal again. But, two weeks later, my partner stopped working and has been home ever since. Poor Smokey cannot handle this massive change in routine and is freaked out that my partner is home full time at the moment.
My partner is saddened by this and tries very hard to be friends with Smokey but to no avail. Smokey was fine with him before but only at night and early in the morning. It seems as if this change in routine has really upset the cat.
Argh! It's doing my head in. The cat would much rather stay in the laundry, looking out the back door at the dog. In the laundry, we can pat him and pick him up, no problems. It's just when he comes inside at the moment, he starts carrying on.
Any advice?

It is hard for a cat to have a change in routine. I know it saddens you, and your partner, but cats really are creatures of habit.
They also remember scares. I'm going to guess that something happened with that uncle that gave him a scare of a man in the house in the middle of the day.
I might suggest feeding him in the house, but with the laundry room door open, so he knows he can get out easily if he needs to. Even better if you can leave that door open when you are home so that he could come in if he felt like it. Maybe even put the water in the house so he has to come in eat and drink. See if that works.

Poor little guy wants to come inside as he looks inside and goes to come in but hesitates and decides not to come in, normally when he hears the boys or my partner.
We have him inside at the moment and, as usual, he is meowing loudly whilst sitting in front of the oven. He makes a dash for the door every now and then and starts to wail loudly. We've been gently picking him up and putting back on the mate in front of the oven.
As soon as the laundry door is opened though, he will make a run for it. Our older cat is in as well - while she may have an issue with the change in routine, she refuses to give up her 'mummy time' and comes in for either of us.
I'll give it go with feeding him inside, possibly near the oven ;) thanks for your response, hope you have a great day =D

Well i can understand that you and your partner would be saddened to see this change in Smokey and i think all you need to do is provide Smokey some space to understand the routine and i am sure with time he would understand everything. U have to think of ways so that he would come out and play with u all and spend some good time.

Hi Subhojit,
It is sad and I guess it is just one of those things that will improve as time goes by. Thankfully, he hasn't lost any weight or condition. At the moment, he seems to be a night time cat, wanting to come in at ridiculous times of the night, when everyone is asleep.
Thanks for your response, have a great day!
