If you grew up poor and everyone including your extended family believed and thought you received a lot of help? By help I mean:
Free education
Food stamps
Free health care such as medicare or medicaid
and other assistant programs to help you
even though you barely received any of it, if any at all?

I was the child that had a poor parent and raised me on the system until I was 13. And I think that those that actually need the help should absolutely get it. But unfortunately there are many of those people who do abuse the system and the percentage that does not gets the brunt of it .
The system helped put my mother thru school, then thru college...and got her on her feet to being the active community citizen and home owner she is today. So it does work- for those who need it and WANT (key word here) to become working citizens.
So it doesn't matter what others think, not even your extended family. Because they aren't feeding you or putting a roof over your head so it really isn't any of their business if you are getting help to pay your light bill or not

My favorite saying is it isn't where you come from, it is where you are going!

Personally there will always be people thinking someone is getting or eligible for something that they might not be, or getting. I have seen it many times, even in my own life, and looking bad wondering why we struggled when we should have never had too. Life then compared to now was a lot easier I feel. But personally I think no matter who you are, you will always be judged and having people thinking you are getting something that you are not.

It's a shame and also very annoying when people stereotype. When a person has little means that is not to say that they are getting help that they may be entitled to.
For neighbors, relatives, family, extended family or whoever to assume that one is receiving help is absolutely uncalled for.
It is no one's business how my husband and I take care of our financial responsibilities and it's not my business how others take care of themselves.
People need to get a life and stay out of everyone else's.

I don't know why they'd think I was getting all that help, if I wasn't. And if I wasn't, I'd wonder why I wasn't getting those benefits! If I didn't qualify for them, then I'd know I was already better off than many people and would work and do what I could to better myself financially. But if my family thought I was receiving help and I wasn't, I'd just... tell them I wasn't.
But, just for your information, food stamps are actually pretty cool. When my dad was laid off work, we went on food stamps for a couple months and holy crap they provide you with a LOT of food. Healthy foods, too! Which are typically more expensive than junk, so it was great! I mean, aside from the financial instability.

Randy and I are having a rough time right now and are receiving food stamps. Randy has a serious foot condition which has resulted him not being able to work anymore and I have not been able to find work. We do get food stamps, however Randy and I really need the help for the time being until I am able to find work or until I can make enough money online to help out with food. I feel that there are some family members who are nosy and need to stay out of other people's business. I have a high level of education, but there are no jobs available. Also, I cannot make over a certain amount of money or else randy will lose his social security disability.

Why would I care what they think of how I got food or health care because it would be any of there busyness.
I don't know what my parents did when I was growing up most kids don't ask nor do they know nor do they need to now.
I don't tell my family yes my kids have wic and they are on Medicare and if they ask why I have those things I'll tell them because we don't have a lot of money and I'm not going to let my kids starve or go with out seeing a doctor and that's it's nine of there busyness what I do because I'm the adult I'm the parent and I make those choices. I have in the pasted been judged on that and I will not hesitate to keep my kids from family if they so think they are better because they can afford all the things they need and I can not or will I let the, tell me what to do when it comes to my kids.
