genuine cowhide leather

How do I know if an item is made up of genuine cowhide leather? I'm really tempted to buy a replica LV bag and the shop owner said it's still made of real leather. When I look at the item, it does look so expensive and the materials feel good. However, I am not an expert in leather and I'm not really sure if it's fake leather. I hate using fake leather because when you keep it in the closet for a long time, it just tends to break so easily.
