If there are stars added to each response, we can give the responses one, two, three four or five stars as per the merit of the response. We can still give the BR to the response we choose. There it stops; I am not asking for any addition to the person who responded; it is just an easier way to solve the unresolved discussions faster. It may be like ‘Yahoo answers’ but not totally so .If you don’t like the idea of adding stars, then add some colored symbol that would be a grade like signal.
This idea struck me because many people write so well and such sincere responses; we are forced to pick one though we would like to choose many. This grading will appease our own conscience when we mark the response because we have done justice to the person who has written well and we can still choose the BR according to what appeals to us most. This would be a ‘win win ‘situation for all concerned.
What do you say my dear friends?
[b]Can we all sign the petition to GO ASK ALICE?
Or
Do you have objections?

Stars added to Discussions? Good But it will difinitely decrease it users. Some Members might leave... Because they will not be happy... By the reputation.... Which others rated.
I thing the best way is to forget about this.
What have you got to say about my opinion?

Why have you chosen the your user name 'Admin? I don't think you are the real admin.Am I wrong?
If all members are not for it and it would create ill-feeling I don't want it to happen. My motive was only to give equal benefit and recognition to all those who wrote sincerely in my topic.
People spend so much of their time and effort writing sincere responses but one is chosen. I wanted to give many BR tags today ; that is why I wrote this.If there had been stars I would have given five stars to most of the responses and picked one as the BR.

Although, I like the thinking that went on here which is behind the suggestion to make a petition, I am not sure I would support a star system. I think it is subject to misuse and that perhaps yahoo answers demonstrates this? Not sure if that is correct. The unresolved discussion problem I do not see as problem for some reason.
In any case, I think something that might work is simply making comments into discussions like "I like how you are thinking about making Mylot even better, very nice" or anything in a discussion that shows appreciation. It does benefit the discussion as well, I think.
What would be good but alas much more complicated in computer coding would be a better system of connections. What I mean, when we find interests or people we like we may not be so prone to loose them!!! I personally find because of the amount of interests, friends list and emails that I receive, sometimes the *good ones* slip through my fingers.

Actually when I suggested the star system , I did not mean it to be linked to our reputation or anything like that.It was just to give recognition to all the people.
It was more for the person who gave the BR to appease his/her own conscience that she was fair .
If something is going to be misused or would create ill feeling I would not like it at all.

Hi kalav56,
Perhaps I choose too strong a word. I was trying to express something else maybe, sorry.
If the purpose as I understand a star system is similar to yahoo questions and answers it does give a certain flavor to discussions. In simplest terms it says this is a question now give an answer. The people that give the best answers get the highest star rating.
I think Mylot is not a question answer site but a discussion site where participation is the key word and the theme. The question is if you were going to rate quality what how could we determine this and give recognition?
Certainly not by best answers to questions. Mylot looks at participation via an algorithm. There is little concern for "closing" discussions.
I do see a tag for best responses that can be given by a discussion starter and really not sure if it serves any purpose?

I think I understand your idea and it seems to be put forth with good intentions and so I think the idea of star rating responses does deserves consideration.
You are right, I know myself if I notice the little tag which shows that one response has been chosen as the best response it might draw my attention to it. So now I can more clearly see how best responses do serve a purpose.
What I do not see nor, feel any obligation to do, is to resolve discussion ie: close them. In fact, I do not see anything in faq's or guidelines that promotes closing topics like it does in Yahoo question and answers? The guidelines do say - "Be sure to rate users’ discussions, responses, comments, and photos for the new myLot reputation system."
In practice here in Mylot, I've notices topics never close, only fade away as they become less populated by responses. So therefore I see little need for closer.

I agree with your suggestion to make it easier for us to resolve our discussions. It is high time for admin to make changes to the present format in mylot. Maybe they can listen to the suggestions forwarded by mylotters as it is we, loyal members, who are the main players that made mylot who it is today.

Hi Kalav, All well here. My laptop at home is not working hence I am not able to access mylot from home. I only manage sometimes from Office when there is no work. But I regularly check the notifications through my mobile and have saved the discussions that I would like to reply as and when I get the time.

Hi kala di
I appreciate your way of thinking. This is really a nice idea and the administration should give a look here. I do also face lots of problem regarding the selection of the best response when i had to shuffle a lot. So, in this new method, nothing will be biased.
have a nice time.

Hullo Shibham! Good to see you here once again. Hope all is well at your end. After your last discussion about the 'futility of it all' you seem not to have made an appearance here .How is life now? Is it any better or worse and causing you regrets all over?

This might create ill feeling as you will be rating so many responses and those who get the least rating might not quite be happy with it. The reputation rating as you will see here is incognito. Just a thought. Let's see what others have to say.

Don't be so pessimistic![black or 'black but beautiful'--in our language we have a saying 'black is beautiful;burnt is tasty'; ]
Anyhow, fooling apart ,I didn't think of the ill-feeling point there-I was sure I will be giving pass marks to everyone who participated out of thankfulness that they participated but I did not anticipate that there can be comparisons and ill-feeling.
Perhaps it would be too complicated to make it incognito like the reputation rating ; it would serve only one purpose of appeasing one's conscience and not be a 'win win' then.

No objections here, sounds like a great idea to me. There are many times I find two discussions that I would love to mark Best Response to but I can't. This would be a great thing to help people see if their writing has gotten better or stayed the same. Or just to give people a good feeling for what they have written. I can't see ADMIN having a problem with this.

Hi,
These all are nice ideas and such periodic changes and additions will make people also fresh and alerted. Even I have pointed out few recommendations earlier and never cared of it. Few months back there were suggestions and notifications aregarding the new face of myLot and there were a lot of discussions happend on it. But thoese ideas also not yet reflected in site. May be under testing process.
The change in colours and star marking also advisable. In fact the colouring will be much suitable as it is really a different choice. Anyway, we can recommened or suggest ALICE about it than like a peition. Let them think and I don't they will consider any such recommendations, becuase in the 3-4 years time there were a lot of nice ideas passed to admin, but they simply ignored it!

I see your point. In fact when I said 'shall we will sign a petition', I just meant it flippantly. It was just a suggestion and I was looking for diverse viewpoints and checking if there are objections . There seem to be. If they accept it it is fine ; otherwise too I am happy with the present system. This site is the best I haVE come across so far.

Seems to be a nice move KalaJi but ....you guessed it, as the star system would be visible openly and maybe send negative vibes to the ones who get low stars constantly, a distracting factor perhaps. As I understand the stars would not be disclosed as who rated user but then we have + and - to rate members. In case one finds someone extraordinarily excellent you can always increase his/her user rating.
And to end my post I have a simple question for you- Just why do you have to see people like us with permanent low stars/ratings? Cheers.

Answer to teh last sentence first Suni51--
Your answer seems absolutely fine to me and why would it fetch a low rating? I am sure other responses of yours are also like this.
That is a good idea of increasing the user rating when you see a person write a very good response.I can go to the person's other discussions and rate them positive.
This will appease my conscience when I give one person BR after reading many other good responses that are pretty close.very good idea!

We have a bad enough problem getting people to use the system that is on Mylot now much less changing it to something else. I don't see where this would really help us any. And again, Mylot has been using the system they have in place for many years.

Yes, I myself have faced this dilemma more than once. There were more than one responses that looked great. Yet, I had to mark one as the best. The rating star system would be a great motivator as well as spice up things that much more. I agree to your idea of a petition to the Admin.
