How much water is too much water?

I need to start drinking water because I don't drink enough. However, how much is too much? I've read that over-drinking can be just as bad as under-drinking...at least in the water department.
There's a site I found, which stated that with my height, weight, age, and other factors, I should be drinking like 80-some ounce of water a day. Is that right? Should I be factoring something else in? Can someone pass me a clue?

Let the color of your urine be a gage. We all know that urine is generally yellow in color. If your urine is a very pale yellow then you are getting plenty of water. The darker yellow or more rich in color the urine is then you are dehydrated and need to drink more water. Keep in mind that other factors not related to dehydration can cause a change in color to your urine. Everyone is different but the rule-of-thumb is 6-8 8 ounce glasses of water a day. You really need to do some research on it and talk to your doctor as well to find out what is right for you. Our bodies are about 75% water so you don't have to worry about drinking too much water as long you are spreading it out throughout the day and you aren't really going overboard with it. But drinking too much at once CAN be deadly. I read somewhere that drinking a liter or more in an hour is too much. But, I don't know if that's right. Again, you'll have to do a little research to find out for sure.

You are right. The color of the urine is the best way to gauge. If it is dark and brown you know that you are not getting enough water or you are taking medication or something else is going on. If the color is pale you are getting enough water. Nothing to worry about either way. Sometimes one also has to take pills for certain illnesses and that can make your urine dark. But on the whole, drinking lots of water is good.

I think you just have to use common sense mostly. Your body has a number of ways to tell you that you are dehydrated. Like the color of your urine. If your lips or skin is dry and chapped you might need to drink more water. If you are sick it's always important to drink plenty of water. There are different ways to tell but the color of your urine may be the easiest way.

It is true that over-drinking can be just as bad as under-drinking. But you should realistically have about four to six glasses of water a day. I am told that too much water flushes out the natural flora of the body and one should not go overboard. Of course if there are times when you have been taking too many pills you want to make sure you have enough fluid in your body. Personally,I also take a lot of water when I have to take calcium pills. Calcium builds up in your body and you don't want to have constipation problems. Keep everything in mind and you won't run into a problem.

Maybe that's why I always got stopped up with my prenatals. I wasn't drinking enough water at the time. I'll have to keep that in mind if and when I have another child.

I think the best way is to drink when you want to drink, I don't think you have to force yourself to drink a certain amount. Just keep yourself hydrated, drink the water as needed would be good enough.

I know a lady that drank too much water and ended up in the hospital. Dilute your electrolytes enough and you are in big trouble. I have found your body tells you when you need to drink. A little extra for good measure won't hurt but don't go overboard.

I do think that it is safe to drink at least a liter of water a day. Although we would often hear that drinking 8 glasses of water is the best. But if you are really not that physically fit, you would not be able to take that much water. The most that I could drink in a day is really about a liter. But now due to the summer heat,I think I am almost hitting the 2 liter mark. I would rather take lots of water than est snacks.

Hi CRSunrise, I don't bother much about how much water we should drink daily. I drink according to my need and habit. I don't think everyone needs the same amount of water required daily. I drink very much more during scorchers and after having physical activities or exercises, for I sweat a lot. I need more water to quench my thirst Less drinking water is required during rainy day. I have the habit to drink two mugs of healthy water when I wake up in the morning. I always prepare two full bottles of water of 1.5 l in the morning. Not including the mugs I have drunk when I wake up. Whether I can finish them or not depends on the situation like scorching day or doing heavy household chores or gardening work or having more physical exercises.
Happy posting and have a nice day

I never heard about how much someone should drink in connection to his/her height, weight, age etc. I also have big doubts that is true. Some people need to drink more since they are more easy dehydrated. Other people (for example those who eat a lot of fruit) can drink way less. Too much of everything means: poison. So yes you can poison a person with water if you force him to keep drinking it. Common is to drink about (includes tea, coffee as well) 1.5 till 2 liters (max about 8-9 bekers/glasses) a day. Which is not really very much if it's taken over the whole day.

Hi,
I drink more water in summer. My wife drink very less water. But she can't drink water after her thirst is quenched. She can not drink water more than 2 glasses. She thinks that need water differs from person to person. We should drink water when we have thirst. You are right. Water is very important for our health but more than enough water is not good.
