when people talk about the weather (be it on or offline), i tend to think it's because they don't think it's really anything much to talk about. maybe they want to talk, but don't have anything really all that interesting to share. an example of this would be my mother in law. she will call you to talk about the shopping that she did, or the money that she spend. i don't know why people talk about weather, when there is not much else to talk about. maybe it's just easier to come up with. what are your thoughts?
by the way. it's sunny and a nice day out. in case anyone wants to know. lol.

For the same reason you are posting the same thing here. Life must be real dull or boring where you are. Have a great evening there.

when we are talking here in the philippines, that would be serious. imagine, it is so extremely hot in here then all of the sudden it will just rain. gosh, and if you live here, you cannot accommodate yourself how to stay cool in this very, very extreme hot outside. even if the sun is not shining much, you can still feel the hotness in the surroundings. yeah, the result of abusing the mother nature by cutting trees, mining, garbage throwing, etc. and now, the weather is seems to rain but still it is hot. how is that?

It is very interesting to be observant about the weather. When I was young I usually take time on observing the weather in our place and for that I can almost predict the exact time the rain and strong winds to come. I also noticed the movement of small fish on the shore when bad weather is coming and at night I was fun looking into the wilderness of sky wherein if I saw an orange color clouds I presumed a heavy rains anytime the next day will come. But it was all a history my line of interest is no longer the same.

Hi. Here in my city,we often talk about it only when it is raining hard or blustery outside.Perhaps bad weather is more easily to make people get down. And many are used to think their blue mood should be blamed on the bad weather.

I guess it's just small talk, talking about the weather is a neutral subject, it's easy as it doesn't provoke, it's not controversial, and people are far more comfortable talking about the weather, sometimes when there's embarrassment of not knowing what to say, or you want to break the silence, starting off with the weather is a good place to begin. I guess it's like breaking the ice.

Here in MA the weather is something to talk about. It changes so fast and so often you can't help but talk about it. It's supposed to be Spring now and all we have is rain which usually means we are done with the snow BUT we have had snow in May at one time and that is something to talk about.

I agree with you to a certain extent. I think if the weather is bad or that there is a disaster such as a hurricane then that is significant to talk about. For instance there was a hurricane not to long ago in my area and everyone was talking about it, because we were afraid. Weather can cause damage and people can get hurt.
Other times I do think that people just talk about the weather because they have nothing else to say. You might talk about the weather to a stranger, or to someone you know just to start a conversation.
Other times it might be nice and you want to tell people in your area that they should go outside and enjoy the weather while it last.
So I think it all depends on the weather, the people, and the situation.

Well if you don't talk about the weather, if must not have much effect on your life. First of all the weather is a safe subject, we all face it. Second for those of us who work outside it's of great importance. If I pay attention I can set my whole day up by the weather, No rain in the morning , I can work outside, rain in the morning, but not in the afternoon, I do my inside work in the morning and get outside in the afternoon. Rain at night means drains must be checked before dark, clear at night may mean frost before morning and some plants must be covered befoe that hits. Even the cloths I wear depend on the weather, the food I fix also depends on the weather, hot soup doesn't go well with heat outside. So for many of us weather rules our lives.

I guess most of the time when you talk about the weather with someone it really is just a conversation starter and would give you something interesting to talk about. I know some friends and relatives that are obsessed with the weather and they would have to look at the Weather Channel a couple of times a day to get an update of the weather in their community. I just look at what the weather is like in case I need to wear a jacket or need to carry an umbrella in case of rainfall.

I think it's because weather's too plain and limited. When I say sunny, I comment hot and humid. When you say cold, I say it's winter time. I've been doing online English tutorials and I usually use "how's the weather?" introduction to beginners. They can't express much so it's an effective way to start the conversation and tutorials. I've tried it with some advance students and we ended up with environmental concerns of global warming. Oh, so it's not that limited after all. LOL! Thanks for the discussion MoonGypsy. Wouldn't have realized until you mentioned. ;)

I like to talk about weather and some memories attach to it. Like for example..."Todays is too hot and going to the beach always reminds me of...How about you? Anything special about "Hot summer"? I like rainy days and talk about food. I like winter and talk about relationship. It is really a fun way of sharing happy memories.
