Mrs Money Penny says do split ticketing to get cheaper train tickets. She is right and I do that some of time. From my local station to Weymouth would cost a lot more than a ticket from my local station to Bristol then another ticket on to Weymouth.
Look at the furthest destination of your slowest train. I am amazed that it is Worcester. To go to London I book on-line 12 weeks in advance and use my rail pass. I have got a Friends and Family Railcard.
Next time I fly on a budget airline I won't take luggage to put in the hold. I will take hand luggage and wear a vest I can pack things into. I have one of those stored in my wardrobe. Mid week can be cheaper than weekends for flying.
Which ideas do you have for getting cheaper tickets?

I would say go in the middle of the week, also go on the off season, do not take coach but sit on the regular seats.

Trouble if you have children, they are still at school during May and June, and perhaps that is the reason that the prices during the summer months are more expensive. We never could afford a coach seat. We had to take regular and I sure was not comfortable.

In my local area , we can applied for student rate and senior citizen rate. Other than that we can also buy monthly pass for public trains. Buying monthly pass it cheaper than the per journey and more convenient and faster as no need to line up everytime to buy ticket. While budget airline , buy the ticket well in advance like 6 months to 1 year before the departure date really have good discount from 30% to 80! however date fixed cannot be exchange or change without hefty fine.

I like the idea of a monthly ticket for a journey to college, uni or work. I like to book much in advance. I am keen to get a cheap flight to Iceland and spend just four days there since it is really pricey. I might fit that in during 2014.

When I worked in London I had a good contact who used to work for British Rail and what he didn't know about the ticketing structure wasn't worth writing about, he knew the fare system inside out, and he was the guy to go to if you wanted to know the best price, as well as the best route. It was amazing, the guy had a wonderful memory and 100% of the time he was right, we saved a fortune through his knowledge of getting around and the right tickets to buy. I strongly believe in this life it's not what you know, it's who you know!

When my husband and I travelled from Denmark to Amsterdam we got some really cheap train tickets. We had to buy the tickets two months in advance to get those tickets. We saved a lot of money that way. In my country there are discount tickets for young people, students and senior citizens. I am not a student anymore and I am over 26 so I am not able to use any of the disounnt cards. In the busses children and senior citizens get discounts. It is also possible to buy ten trip discount cards and I did that in the past when I a student and had to travel between my home and the town where my school was.
It is often possible to buy cheap plane tickets if we are willing to change planes instead of choosing a direct flight. It is more timeconsuming to change planes but we are often able to save a lot of money that way.

There are companies that offer you cheapertickets at some times of the year (low season, for instance). As for myself, I spend less in metro tickets because I`m a senior. Around the world there are special prices for age groups and for students.

you can try varies traveling sites for airline tickets. I have used yapta.com in the past, they have a refund policy if you book a flight and it becomes cheaper between the time you book and the time of the flight they issue a refund for the amount the price decreased.
The split ticketing idea is a good one and you might want to try and apply it to airline tickets to as in leave your destination using one airline but use a different airline for your return trip because it would be cheaper to get one way tickets with other airlines then to get round trip tickets using one airline.
Another one is you are getting a rental car and a flight out. Choose a cheaper destination for the flight and then drive the rest of the way to your real destination, you are paying for the rental anyways might as well use it right?

It would have cost 600 pounds to fly to Central America so I did well to get a 200 pound flight to Cancun in Mexico. I like the refund policy if a cheaper flight does happen like spend 520 dollars and then when an airfare comes up for 40o dollars get 120 dollars.
It might be worth flying London to Bangkok then getting cheap one ways onto the Philippines. Leaving from the UK Perth is cheaper to fly into than Sydney or Melbourne. Distances in Australia are long. Thanks for your excellent response.

I do agree in early bookings. Especially booking during off seasons. I've never tried packing light but I think it's a better option because they allow hand-carries to be up to 7 kilos max here in the Philippines. Plus I won't have to worry if I come late because there's nothing to wait at the counter. And since there aren't human weighing scales in terminals, I think I'll try multiple-pocketed vest, too. Actually, a lot of promo airfares are extremely abundant and popular nowadays. And the travel dates are set four months to a year after the promo date. So I can still have time for palnning and preparation. Thanks for sharing Maximax8 ;)

Going in the off season can be superb like November instead of high season December. It is generous they allow up to 7 kilos for hand luggage in the Philippines. I love the idea the the multiple pocketed vest. I hope you can take advantage of a promo airfare.

How about in your country? How much do they allow as hand carry? Actually I did try the promo fare and got lucky with almost 90% discount! However the promo fares are usually only one way so we booked the return flight as regular fare. We're lucky to have that discount because we're travelling as a family and our daughter's 2 now so we have to pay her seat already. Great great bonus on fare discount! ;)
