Hey guys, I'm a student planning to further my studies at a university in Christchurch, New Zealand. While thinking about how peaceful and conducive the study environment there is, I was wondering what popular attractions that I can visit there and any fun activities that I can participate to take my mind off things (in case the study stress becomes a little too unbearable) ? Thanks a lot!

Having been there some years ago, I have to say that New Zealand is a very scenic country with great lakes and vast countryside. Even their farms are well kept and clean. Christchurch is much like any modern city and the people there are very friendly. I would suggest renting a car and self drive to the various parts of the southern island. Queenstown is where you would like to go for all the action and holiday experiences. You could travel there by their local coach networks, I suggest you opt for the scenery coaches where they have windows all the way to the top of your seat. You would not miss the sight of blue skies and fluffy clouds even with your seat reclined. If you are on self drive, you can always travel with a friend or 2, pack a picnic basket and have a picnic in one of the scenic lakes. Great place to have a picnic and pictures. If you are on vacation, you can consider exploring the glaciers like Mount Cook or Fox Glaciers or you can visit the Northern island and find a farm to stay to experience a farm stay. It is quite an experience and I would recommend Hamilton (North) where even Hollywood celebrities are singing praises about the farms there. Great service, hosts, meals and very comfortable. Since you are studying there, I think you will have a lot of time to explore so don't rush. Take your time and enjoy this wonderful and beautiful country.

Hey, thanks for the great suggestions! :D I am very much intrigued by the idea of having a nice, pleasant picnic at a lake. But which lake would you most recommend? :)

I traveled to New Zealand in 2001 and stayed into 2002. Whilst there I visited Christchurch and liked going on the old tram and seeing the cathedral. I went to the port at Lyttelton where there is a time tower like in Deal, England. Wow! I would recommend visiting Akoroa because it is very pretty. If you have time travel up to Kaikoura to see the wildlife like seals and penguins. You can also see penguins in Omamanru to the south. Dunedin is a lovely city even further south. I hope that you have a really lovely time studying in New Zealand.
