Hey there myLotters!
As of this moment, I am confused, depressed and I badly need someone who light my thoughts. I am a Nurse, I had just practiced my profession for 1 year and I am now planning to work in a hospital. Here in the Philippines, the competition for nurses are so tough. One must have a connection to get a job. I applied in a government hospital but it is a volunteer job, I will be a volunteer nurse for 6 months, no chances of being hired in the hospital and no allowance.
I also applied as a Call Center Agent in one of the most popular BPO industry here in the Philippines, I am just waiting for a validation from the said account. I can also apply in any BPO Industry, but I don't want to change a career then.
If you were in my shoes, what will you do? Should I look for a high-paying job but I will not practice my profession OR I will practice my profession, but I have no salary.

Hi!
It is a difficult decision to make. Competition in jobs for nurses is really tough because there are so many nursing students who graduate every year. Most of them end up in a job which is not in line with their profession. Some even go abroad to take chances. In your situation, you need to earn money to sustain yourself and though working as volunteer is a noble thing to do, you still need to earn.
It is all up to you to decide but if I were you, I won't be that too idealistic because of the pressing situation right now.

It's okay, that I will not earn money. But my problem is that, how about my daily expenses. I'm hoping that my parents will give me an allowance.

Know what your heart's desire. If I would tell you to go on with being a volunteer, would you be happy about it? I am not into medical field but I know people who are into this kind of work are really have a calling for this. That is why I look high on these people. For me it is one of the most difficult jobs ever. And only those who have passion for true service can do this kind of job.
If you are not happy with my explanation then you know what you want. And whatever decision you may have, it only means this is the best for you.
Have a great day!

Hey there CQE,
I have been doing volunteer work for awhile now. Volunteer experience looks great on a resume. Oftentimes, something that begins as volunteer work can lead to a paying job. I hope that helps. Best wishes to you. Please keep us posted. Remember that the Lord has plans for good in store for you.

Hi there MandaLee!
Yes, correct that doing volunteer works do good in a resume, but this kind of volunteer work means you have to work like you do have a job.

A lot of us are on the same predicament here in the Philippines...I am a nurse too...and happen to be on the same boat as you...yes, volunteer work on our resume may look good but it doesn't feed the mouths in our homes...it is very unfortunate that our government policies do not do much for the thousands of nurses who have this problem, it would be a much better experience if these so called "volunteers" were given the assurance that they will be absorbed into the company where they are doing volunteer work after a specific period of time...we can just keep our hopes up. cross our fingers and pray...

Hey there friend. This really so devastating. I'm just being hopeful that one day, I will land a job. Let's cross our fingers. God bless us. :)

if you have other means of financial support, i suggest you go for volunteer work. you will get experience and learn a lot hands on. sometimes, this can even lead to a job. however, if you need the money to get by, then get accept this high paying job.
as much as we want to continue with our vocation, sometimes financial problems hamper us. we have to be practical too.

I'm biased. Before I retired, I was responsible for the recuitment, management and support of volunteers, so my advice. Voluntary work doesn't count as 'professional' work, but it's experience, show's commitment, looks stunning on a reume, provides contacts and a recent reference: hardly unpaid labour, low paid, but not unpaid. If you can afford it, go for it.

I do believe in the consequences of being a volunteer, but It's like you are working like a Staff Nurse. I'm so ashamed to ask money to my parents

we go to school to have education and after that get a work and start making our own life.
if i were in your shoes i will go for the higher paying job instead of working without pay and allowances.it is a waste of time to do it and your life will go nowhere.

i think for 6 months you could work as a volunteer there. with your experience you might be hired in a hospital. the place you will volunteer for sure there will be people with connections. if you do your job well and they like it for sure they will want to help you find a paying job. dont give up your dream for now. if after those 6 months as a volunteer you cant still get a job in the hospital then you can try in another profession but dont give up your dream of being a nurse without fighting first.

it is hard when you train for a job and then your told you wont be paid and how do you think your going to live on no money no one can give you the right answer as some will say be a nurse with no money others will say take a job with money but in the end you have to follow your own heart
