Dear Friends, It seems to me that a lot of students have been struggling with stress in college. So what is stress and how does one cope with it while studying? Stress according to the text Psychology: Context of Behaviour is the response of individuals to the circumstances and events, called stressors, that threaten them and tax their coping abilities. Coping is the process of managing taxing circumstances, expending effort to solve personal and interpersonal problems, and seeking to master, minimize, reduce, or tolerate stress and conflict. How do we cope with stress? There are several ways or strategies of coping with stress:Problem-focus and Emotion-focus, Active-cognitive, Active-behavioural and Avoidance. Problem-focus is Lazarus's term for the cognitive strategy of squarely facing one's own troubles and trying to solve them. Emotion-focused and Larazus's term for responding to stress in an emotional manner, especially using defensive appraisal. Active-cognitive is a coping responses in which indivdiuals actively think about a situation in an effort to adjust more effectively. Active- behavioural is the responses in which individuals take some type of action to improve their problem situation. Avoidance is the responses that individuals use to keep stressful circumstances out of their awareness so they do not have to deal with them. Also if we are more observant we will see when our friends are under going stress and we can reach out to them.

Hi there Sherbeauty29! I have experienced that especially during the finals week when I was in college. I had to add more stressful experiences from when we need to beat the deadlines for our college magazine. It is very stressful yet very fulfilling. What I do is I take breaks, spend time with family and friends and just chat with my co-writers/editors and just have fun with them. It would be hard for anyone to work or study non-stop and you will definitely be burnt out so we really need to take breaks once in a while.

Yup, as much as we need to beat deadlines, we should make sure that we are getting enough rest so as not to put our health in jeopardy. Cheers for coffee!
