Today is Earth Day! What sorts of things are you going to do to help our planet today?
http://www.earthday.org/
I totally forgot about it until this morning. We'd been planning on doing some yard work over the weekend so we could plant some new bushes in the yard to take the place of the old dead ones we took out. But it was cold over the weekend, so we didn't get to the yard work and didn't buy the new bushes. But this is something we will do on the next nice weekend we have.
So, for Earth Day, I think I will spend some time later today without using any electricity. I'm going to have my kids write some pen pal letters to some sick kids.. got the idea from GreenMoo. Might not make a huge difference for the environment, but it will bring a smile to a sick child's face when they receive the letters.

I hadn't realised today was Earth Day! But today I've doing my ordinary thing, which is pretty much a celebration of the earth :) I've been out walking the goats, and it's a beautiful Spring day.
I'm so happy to see you're going to do some letters too. When I read the stories of some of the kids on the website it makes me cry, and so terribly grateful that my kids are healthy. Writing a letter is such an easy thing to do really, and it'll tie in brilliantly with using no electricity!

I'm glad you gave me the idea. I found a site here in the states called www.hugsandhope.org. I've also started posts on Gather and Bubblews about it and got some other people interested in doing it themselves. It's a great thing and there are going to be a lot of happy kids out there when they receive their letters!

That is a wonderful idea! I spent part of yesterday without lights as we had a storm....and it knocked out the lights...does that count? I am laying out new grass seed though this afternoon...hopefully I can fill in the patches that are sparce!

I didn't have any plans for earth day. I heard something on tv about earth day but wasn't sure which day it was. I can remember when kids used to bring home small trees that they could plant. I guess schools don't do that anymore.

What a great idea to write to sick children Kat. I sent an email to the twins' mother reminding her of Earth Day as they wear jeand and an earth day Tee shirt colour like blue or green. They should also bring in a poem or a poster or a drawing. They will also be planting trees on the school's propertyand floweing bushes too. I can't make a contribution until this evening as it is washing and ironing day today so electricity willl have to be used. But I do some some ferns to plant but am not sure that I can do it alone.Maybe I will get the lady who has come to do the washing to help me.

That would be nice!
I'm washing too, unfortunately.. Monday is a big cleaning day around here as the house gets so messy when everyone is home on Sundays.

I always remember my kid's school doing something for earth day. They would do some craft, or have some home-activity that they have to do to commemorate Earth day.
I guess this year they didn't have anything.
If not for a post on facebook, I wouldn't even know that it was Earth Day.

Hi katsmeow1213!
Earth day for me was fun and lucky! ;) I was able to get a time out with online jobs and opted to spend time at home more. So my husband and I decided to do a general house cleaning. I was tasked to organize things and he takes care of the cleaning. So I started organizing bedroom, the study room and finally the kitchen. I knew that the kitchen would be the most challenging but not expecting "treasures"! I had a lot of junk under the sink and I can sell them to a junk shop. I got a lot of used bottles, empty cans, used papers and broken stuff. I was happy to clean those out and even happier that I got something out of trash. Instead of just throwing trash, why not consider to sell them or reuse them until exhausted. You may use something in different ways and may receive money instead, just like me. So Earth Day activities are not confined with planting but as well as lessening waste that makes the Earth clean and green.
Thanks for the discussion! ;)

I forgot all about Earth Day until I logged into myLot. I'm pretty disappointed in the way our planet is polluted every single day. I wish I could see how it looked on Day 1!
